You know I was kidding. To be clear I still watch a fair amount of DVDs since like you say there are tons of things out there that are not on BD (or on DVD for that matter, thats what downloads and LaserDisc rips are for). Also quite often the BD version of a movie is not at Blockbuster or available online or hopelessly queued up by others. Just this Christmas break I have watched at least 3 things on DVD, two that are unavailable in BD; The Ice Harvest, Home for the Holidays and Rare Exports.

Silly me. a while back I posted on the problem discs thread that one of my new units would not read a CD-r/w. It will read them, but not the 5.90 firmware update for the Sony BDP-S300 :-D which is what is on the disc I tried to load.

Sorry about that :-) I must have been a mode where I was not feeling humorous. I've cut down on reading comments on online news postings, as reading too many is bad for my blood pressure... :-) Aside from a few selected sites.

One thing which also happens is that a particular series may have one season in B-D, then go back to DVD-only if they did not sell the B-D release in sufficient volume.

Every spec. and under the hood review i read said pretty much the same thing...clone or rebrand. you're about the remote. however, once i made the adjustments with my harmony...it was game over. it also matches my other onkyo equipment bezel, which is aadded plus.

O Brother... played all the way through with no problems. Also Final Destination 5 played without any issues despite it being a WB/New Line title.

Also watched the 1st 2 episodes of Sons of Anarchy season 2 without any issues and all of season 1 played without trouble also. The mastering and design of the menus is different between the 2 seasons so far, but still they played fine.

Smallville season 10 ( the final one) played without problems... Also the Girl Next Door (the one that is sort of like a newer Risky Business) played fine.

does anyone if samsung is going to come with another firmware upgrade?

Nobody knows with certainty but with each passing day, the chances grow slimmer.

I have a BD-UP5000 for sale in NJ. Player is in great condition, includes original box, remote, and manuals.

Funny that you would post about The Girl Next Door. I was just looking last night to see if it was available as a prime instant stream on Amazon, which it is not, it costs $ to view. I'm not even sure what prompted me to look for that movie. Probably came up on searches when I was researching the value of the 20 or so recent BDs I have bought from Blockbuster, some for me, most for my daughter and son-in-law.

-Pitch Black
-all 3 Bournes
-Ocean's set (no outside cover)
-Trading Places (new, but has been repackaged as used, still with top seal intact). This one was quite expensive at one time. Not sure now?
-Harry Potter 1-4 (I have the box set plus the 1st 4 individual and the rest on BD).
-The Island (UK). This copy won't play on any 5k I have ran into, the Italian I have that is identical plays fine and is beat up. Plays on Tosh players and the LG fine.
-UFO Showtime
-The Reaping UK import (sealed new)
-Wyatt Earp UK Import (sealed new)
all are used and open, unless indicated otherwise. I ended up with most of these with a player I bought off someone here a couple years ago and have been keeping ahold of the 1st 2 Bournes since mine are Tosh promos that came with players and still sealed and also my Pitch Black and Virgin are also still sealed. I have just never got around to assessing the value and listing on half.com/eBay. I am probably least interested in getting rid of the 1st 2 Bournes (since mine are sealed promos) and the HPs (since I would rather not have to touch the set), but all the others are up for grabs for sure and I'm not opposed to unloading my sealed Virgin or Pitch Black if someone absolutely has to have a new one.

If anyone is interested in any of these, just PM me with what you are interested in and I can take a look at the condition and let you know what I want. I also still have a ton of D-VHS stuff left, but have no written down inventory. If you are interested in those, best to let me know what movies you are looking for and I can let you know if I have it open or sealed. Some I have listed on eBay (sealed and more rare ones). And no, I don't have 2 Fast 2 Furious, American Pie, Bourne Identity or The Scorpion King. I sold my American Pie and Bourne years ago to the same buyer and haven't been able to replace them and 2 Fast.. and Scorpian King are the only released feature films that I have never owned on D-VHS.

While I'm not abandoning all of my HD-DVDs yet, I do have the following discs I'd be willing to sell if anyone is interested:

I'm curious, because I imported the Island on Blu-ray from the UK and that played fine for me.

i own all of them. i went back to 2 player dual format in my theater, but still use my 5k's in family room and upstairs den. my main reason for going back is a
i purchased the panny 210 with DLNA to pull movis and music from my server.

Warner Home Video UK. There are actually several different EU/over the pond releases, but aFaIK all the actual discs are the same they just have different covers with various different languages and art. For some reason the UK one I have won't play, but the Italian one will. I have had the UK disc load up and sorta play a couple times on a couple players, but I have tried it on every player and loader I have and it refuses to play on anything but the LG and the A35. I think the disc might be just a little messed up and we know how fussy the 5k is. The discs look identical and the content is identical as well. At one time this was a highly sought out and expensive HD. I got mine cheep on ebay through various nefarious means ;-)

BTW it's been released in the US now, so no need to go searching for it on HD, unless you have to have it and are a collector. Also the price has come way down on the imports as you can see from the above link.

Unless you don't have another HD player, you should consider keeping Fear and Loathing... since it is a reference HD title. It has some of the best video of any HD out there and I often use it to test stuff. Nothing special about the rest.

My Island is WB too, imported on Blu from the UK. I had imported that and the Tin Man mini from the UK before a US release was announced.

Just to be clear I am referring to the HD-DVD, not the Blu-ray. I have imported some WB UK BDs, 13 Ghosts, the Goonies, and The Green Mile come to mind. Often the UK releases can be cheeper and more compatible than the US ones and also available sooner.

Yeah, I got you... It is just curious that the Blu-ray is fine but you have trouble with the HD-DVD... You would think there would not be anything special to cause a problem.

I'm sure it is just this particular copy since I have the Italian version that is identical and it is fine. Odd however that the UK one is basically perfect and the Italian is beat up. I got a partial or full refund on both due to condition and issues, so no biggie.

It really is not that odd that a HD would have issues and the same movie on BD does not. A good example is the movie Bubble. HD and BD versions were released around, if not the same, time by the studio and the HD still does not play on the 5k, however aFaIK the BD plays fine. The mastering and tech on HD and BD are vastly different. I'm not sure of the exact release times for The Island on HD and BD in the UK. Amazon says 30 July 2007 for both, so I assume that is correct. I'm sure if I bought another UK version that it would be fine and we would have heard about this before from someone for sure. Everything else HD and BD that I have imported has played fine. Sometimes like with Perfume the menus are a little messed up or in another language, but the movies play fine.

Shutter Island played fine for me last evening. Also disc 2 of season 2 of SoA is working well also.

Can't get chapter 26-27 Disc 2 to play on BD-UP5000 using 1.6.

Anyone else having the same problem?

I assume that you are referring to Episode II Attack of the Clowns? Right? No issues here either skipping to them or selecting them from the search/chapters menu item. I even ff through both scenes without any trouble.

BTW - isn't it a 9 disc set, including the 3 bonus discs?

Both The Other Guys and The Switch played for me last night without trouble.

Appreciate your suggestions. Disc works fine now. Lens cleaner got whatever it was I couldn't see on on the disk.

On disc 4 and everything's working fine.

Blue valentine mostly played fine. There was about a min. Around the 30 min. mark where there was some issues. This was during the flashback where Michele Williams is cruising around in a wheelchair doing "research" and her wrestler bf at the time is introduced. It was a heavily used blockbuster rental and had visual marks that I could not clean off. I'm sure the issue was disc and not title related, but should be verified if someone happens to rent/buy that one. Glad I did not buy the movie, I almost did several times. The movie was good, but not good enough to own.

Horrible Bosses played without difficulty for me over this past weekend. I accidentally posted about this on the problem disc thread.
