My ears were itching just now.
Yup, still here, but yes, sold both UP5000s years ago. Don't really regret it since I don't miss all the glitches nor the slow loading times, and I am now using my Blu-ray player (with its multicodec support), as a network streamer just as much as if not more so than I use it to play discs. It's a wonder the UP-5000 received another update, but I think the biggest reason for them to refrain from anymore updates is the cost since the player requires special attention for an ever-dwindling number of owners. HD DVD is only continuing to die if you count the ~44 exclusives that the studios have still not managed to convert to BD (at this point, the majority of them may never come), so this does leave a modicum of novelty value in this player if nothing else, with hopefully more updates to come.
I'm pretty confident SmartyPants (haven't seen his posts in a while) and wmcclain went Oppo and never looked back (as have I, though, like you stated, I still lurk here due to my early intrigue with these players and the promise they held, even if it was a long shot to be realized).
