I have spent more time with my player and am feeling better about it. I just found this thread the night I picked up the unit and got caught up in the hysteria of the first several pages I read. People abandoning ship and wanting to return it and others calling it crap and saying they are not buying one.
All in all my video is looking pretty darn good. I have seen some of the "Mosquito Noise", though not horrible and continuous. The biggest video goof I see is the 4:3 screw up. I would think this could be corrected with firmware, but that is wishful thinking, as I have no idea what can and cannot be done with firmware fixes. When I had my 1400 (which I returned for this unit), all SD 4:3's were gray barred and in proper ratio. There is a zoom button on the remote, which did not work (this remote doesn't have the zoom) and there were complaints I read of user reviews that complained they couldn't zoom and fill the screen. I only use the original aspect ratio, so I do see this as a problem with the 5000.
The audio end...well that has been hashed over and over and that is something that from all reports can be corrected and added to with firmware. I have had one instance of "motor boating" on my first excursion with P.O.T.C.: At World's End.
I just got through looking at Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix again. I picked this up, along with Bladerunner BD and watched them on my 1400. I was impressed with Bladerunner, but Harry not so much. I thought Harry looked a little grainy and not as sharp. Now on the 5000, I thought it looked better and I was pleased. Maybe it is my imagination, or I just really want this unit to work...who knows? I don't have the 1400 to compare, so I am just going off my one time viewing of the movie and what I remember.
I hope all works well, as I really don't want two players. Just wish there was some idea of what Samsung knows to be problems and that they can take care of them.
My unit has a manufacture date of 10/2007 and the F/W: 071020.01-1020-0924.11XAA
I don't have a bridge yet, so it is not connected to my wireless. Thus I have not updated the firmware yet, since it is not available for the download and CD process. That I also feel is strange./? Seems like the update would have been on the website right away.
