If you see the same thing, or worse, on the RS1, that will mark the end of our consideration of the 5000.

Do you have a BD, by any chance? If so, does its image show the same problem? (Apocalypto from PS3 1080p @24 looks perfect on the RS1 + HPpower, so if you own, or can rent or borrow that disk, it would make a good one to test the 5000's BD image.)

Thanks again for taking the trouble to report what you see.

I do own a few BR discs and Apocalypto is one of them. I will try 2 or 3 BR discs tonight and report back here. I'm not too optimistic regarding the RS1 since I project to a 144" screen... It already distracts me enough on the 46" Sharp, so most likely it will be unbearable on the RS1, especially since I sit at 11 feet from the screen...

Just a note to everyone buying this thinking it's a display unit.
Those little display cardboard sign things come with pretty much every HDM stand alone player. It doesn't mean that your unit was actually meant to be the display unit. I've bought a BDP-1200, BDP-1400, XA1, A2, A3 and XA2 and they ALL came with that little display.

Anyone know if you can use both HDMI + Component at the same time connected?

I want to feed HDMI @ 1080p to my 1080p projector and just component to my 720p Plasma which only has component.

I think your RS1/screen-size/viewing-distance set-up is the ultimate torture test for any video source. This is precisely why I'm so interested in reading your next report.

We sit about 9' from our 120" screen, so if what you see is intolerable, it almost certainly would be the same for us, too.

Thanks again.

Same here, although a bit further...

This video stuff is indeed disturbing. I really wonder why none of the preliminary reviews said squat about this? What did they change? Fortunately, the Crutch has a great 30 day no questions asked return policy (extended to Jan 31st) where they even pay shipping. I will try it and see. If this thing sucks, then back to my HTPC until someone gets their act together. There is nothing like a boatload of returns that gets a manufacturer's really fast attention!

It would sure be nice to have a manufacturers rep here. I know that when (rarely) that is done, it helps hugely. That happened back when I bought my old (now retired) Infocus SP7200. One of the Infocus engineers actually answered questions on the thread. Would that all the companies would do that!!

From what has been reported so far and with current shipping firmware the answer appears to be no. In theory the 5000 will be able to send bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA to a HDMI 1.3 AVR, however at the moment it can't. My 5000 will arrive tomorrow and I have a 705 (almost exactly the same as 805 and exactly regarding features that matter here). I will report back what I find for sure tomorrow.

I had/have high hopes for the 5k too. Perhaps it will mature, but in another form, or even by another manufacturer.

Sure miss the olden days, when you dreamed about a piece of gear. Bought it, and it met your expectations.
Maybe they never really existed..(sigh)

Can It play HD DVD in 50 Hz mode ?
( BBC Planet Earth)
This firmware will appear tomorrow by Toshiba (17.XII.2007).

I am sure you will see folks come on here and say the 5000 is a great player too. (probably work for Samsung)...The reality is the Panny BD30 is the best player for blu-ray and the HD-A35/XA2 are the best for HD-DVD...Period. I actually prefer the A35 over the XA2.

The BD-P1400 is a great player...

Wouldn't a 1080p/24 source (that doesn't convert it to 1080i then back to 1080p) to a display that accepts 1080p/24 look, identical on different displays since there is no processing from either source or display. I guess the display does change the 24 to some multiple but that wouldn't cause those observed issues would it?

The framerate doesn't have any influence on the "digital noise" problem.

Well, G. Damn It! Now I don't know what to do! I have this player on order from three places...based on good reviews from respected sites throughout the year. Now I am wondering if I should get two separate players. Ugh!
As a side note, I can't even begin to tell you guys how frustrated I am with this. I could have lived with no 5.1 analog Dolby THD and DTS MA output since I intended for this unit to replace my A2 in the bedroom, but if I can't even get close to the picture I was getting from my A2, there's no way in hell I can justify keeping a $745 piece of equipment that gives me such digital artifacts on the picture.

It's amazing to me that they shipped a player with such a video display issue, this should never happen. I noticed the problem right away, how can it pass QA testing at all with such an obvious flaw is beyond me.

Same here. In fact I got a call from my friend at BestBuy last night and they are holding one of the two BD-UP5000 players that came in yesterday for me to pick up today. Right now I'm thinking I may be better off getting the Panasonic BD player and forget the Samsung.

Does the Panasonic decode all of the audio codecs through bitstream?
How disappointing... I cancelled my order with Amazon until more of the dust settles... I had such high hopes for this hardware...

I don't think it does but in my case it makes no difference as I have the Denon 3808CI receiver to do all the decoding.

Do like I did, get it, try it, return it before 01/31/08 if you're not happy. Like I said, if a firmware fixing the video problem doesn't come out before that date, then it's going back to BB for sure.

Yup, although mine is not due for 5 days, that is my plan, Crutch has the same return deal. Just don't fill out the free disc offers or anything....

eurotrance, do you still plan to check it out with the RS1?
Yeah, what the heck. Maybe you'll luck out and it might not have this problem.
If so, just get rid of it.

Hey I may do that because I only have today to pick up the player. I of course don't have any BD titles to try on the player (have about 200 HD DVD's) so any suggestions on BD titles worth looking at?

Definitely, it is on my to-do list (hopefully tonight).

PCM 5.1 should work fine so get SpiderMan 3; ditto latest Harry Potter. 300 is good. Hairspray is a good one if you want to see how DTS-MA 7.1 doesn't work (at least, for right now).

Ratatouille, Apocalypto are by far my 2 must-have titles on BR.

Because as I said, I was originally interested in this player. But now I am glad I blew it off...(can't you read?)...This forum also works as a means to know which players to stay away from...This is clearly one of them...

do any of the posters who have 1.3 receivers have experience setting up the bitsream audio. I know when I got my 1400 it took some tweaking to get it to work with my onkyo 875. Just wondering if they missed a setting in the player or the receiver.

I think for now I will wait, I was going to try and find one locally, since the one I saw got sold or order one. I have owned the 1200 blu-ray Samsung player for a month, and a friend has the 1400 and both units produce excellent picture quality, so I have a feeling this baby is in need of some firmware updates. When they kick in a firmware for Dolby True 5.1/7.1 and DTS MA 5.1/7.1 from the analogs, and it seems they are addressing the picture issue, I am in. They did fix several things on the 1200 during the time I owned it that had to do with stability and picture quality via firmware. Already promised is the DTS MA upgrade for this player, so the next month should be interesting.

If not, CES may have a few surprises, I already own a PS3,I am not going to rush out and get an stand alone hd-dvd player, I'll see what this or the next combos bring, but I will follow this thread and want to thank everyone that has one for going to the trouble of testing and posting, it's very helpful..

My feeling is that these issues: picture and sound issues, will be corrected, the other Samsung hi-def players have all looked stunning on my screen and my friend's.
