Yes. I am anxious to hear the findings. I have the Onkyo TX-NR905 receiver as well and I have a 5000 on the way from Crutchfield.

Hooked the Samsung up to Pioneer VSX-94THX.
Does not light up the Dolby TrueHD, DTS yes, DTS-HD Master Audio No. Hooked it up as instructed and using HDMI1.3 cable.

Has anyone paid attention to this... "Total Size: 128(MB)... Available Size: 131 (MB)..." Can someone tell me what is wrong with this? Anyone?

Ill give you a hint...think subtraction... (128 - 131 = ??) How can there be more memory available then there is onboard memory to start with? This makes me to believe 256 MB is probably on there and that as someone else said, for some reason...this current firmware cannot see it. This will probably come when the firmware for making this unit profile 1.1 comes about.

This could very easily be a divide by 1000 versus 1024 issue since 128MBytes using the standard 1024 definition is actually 131,072 Kilobytes. If that "remaining" information label calculation is using 1000, then you would see this.

Can you confirm your various audio settings and (bitstream, etc.) in your player? Also, have you had a previous player attached to the receiver that did light up those lights?

Thanks.

It's not just that, to my knowledge and the people with the unit can confirm this, there is nothing we could use to attach external memory (usb/cards/keys)?

Some brave soul needs to open their unit and confirm what they see, but I do understand why people wouldn't do this.

I'll use the BH200 as an example again, someone opened their box and advised that they have 1GB NAND memory in there, which is flash memory (not hard-disk space, etc) which was hinted to be the difference why we only see 128MB "flash memory" on the 5000.

On a related note, I wonder if it would be theoretically possible (through firmware) to enable the device to access networked storage through whatever network its ethernet port is plugged into. That's the only thing I can think of in terms of expandable storage. Feed it a NAS share someplace and let it cache there.

That said, 128 MB is still more than enough for any interactive content out there today.

Greetings!
Color me purple and count me in as an owner now!

As was suggested:
S/N:01986VSPB00342M
Maunufactured: 2007/11

I was expecting this @ work today. The UPS driver took off without the 5K being delivered. Armed with my printout of the tracking info stating item was "out for delivery", I caught up with him and asked where my item was. He scratched his head, looked around the truck and could not find it. After a call to his dispatcher, and assurances that it WAS on the truck, he did find it. In the iterim, I had visions of JQP opening this up and having no idea what he was looking at....
Who else but one of us would go chasing down the UPS truck for their prize?
Enough typing!
I am off to hook this up to my Denon 3806 (upgraded to a 3808ci, coming in the mail this week) and my Samsung HL-S6187W!
Have had a Toshiba XA2 that I was very happy with, but really wanted the Blu stuff too....
I will report initial impressions later!
Best,
snowtrooper1966

Thanks.

I have the Panasonic DMP-BD30 and it lights every audio format correctly. (HD-master Audio etc.) The 5000 is set to audiophile quality but does not light all the audio formats as the Panny

If I got you right, you are suggesting that Samsung has a huge Server farm somewhere to accomodate the thousands of players people will have to cover this extra space requirement?

Can you imagine the lag this would create considering the different speeds people utilise for the internet? Can you see any IT Security problems with this (this thing is connecting to your home network, so this is a computer).

Besides, implementing anything like this would cost Samsung much more than putting the proper amount of memory into the unit in the first place.

So I guess this is our confirmation...

No decoding or bitstream of advanced audio codecs...bummer.

Well, I'll just have to continue using my XA2 and Panny 30. I soooo wanted the 5k to be "The" player. Oh well.

Why don't some of the BD-5000 owners who have determined that they see a problem with their unit call the Customer Care number on the last page of the manual and see if they are aware of the issue(s) and what remedies Samsung has planned?

No, I'm suggesting that you point the 5K at your home NAS or a drive/share in your local network someplace (not the internet) and that it can be taught to use that as its cache in addtion to or instead of its 128 MB of onboard storage. Speed shouldn't be a big issue assuming you are wired and this doesn't touch the internet (just your local network).

Functionally, it's similar to sticking a memory card or USB stick in for more storage. Since the 5K has only an ethernet port for an interface, I figure this is probably the only way. Granted, it probably won't happen, but I'm kind of curious if it could work.

Thanks for the update but now I am even more confused about this. Are we now saying that ONLY analog outputs TrueHD for 2 channels? I thought this was outputting TrueHD but not to the extent we wanted (2 channels, not 5.1/7.1).

What you've stated implies that via HDMI 1.3a, bitstreaming to a receiver with 1.3a ability - it does not even play 2 channel TrueHD? Or does it not show TrueHD when it's only playing 2 channels????

Confused...someone please help clear all this up (separate analog vs. HDMI 1.3a ability).

True, I see your point.

But then we get to a point where, now the profile levels (BD 1.1, BD-LIVE) are defined by individual owners, and not by the player. ie: you have 10GB NAS drive at home with 100MB link. I have 64MB NAS drive at home with 1MB link (this is just an example). You would have BD-LIVE capability and I wouldn't have anything - even though we use the same player.

I can't see this being "allowed" to define the profiles. Though I agree with you that it could be done, in my opinion this would brake the profile definition "rules".

Just curious....how many owners obtained their players from sources other than the "1 unit from Best Buy"? We've heard from more than one of the BB-purchased owners say they believe they got the display model. That being the case, it makes sense that these units are in need of some "fixing". Perhaps the players shipped a little later will already have a bump in firmware.

Does not show up TrueHD on my Pioneer.
post #588 of 13238
This is great. After I cancel my order for a 5000 this morning from BBFB, they send me a email now to say its been shipped and for me to refuse delivery from UPS. Meanwhile their page doesn't show squat about my order being shipped or even a tracking#.
I went ahead and ordered a BD30 and a A30 and everything is headed my way it looks like.

Dolby THD comes in 2 channels from this player.

Analog and HDMI, both come in 2 channels from the player.

And noone can get their receivers to show that they are receiving Dolby THD over HDMI.

Interesting about the 2 free BR movies,
Crutchfield has started shipping their second 100 batch of the 5000 which they recieved today, so I will get mine by the end of the week, and hopefully by then someone will have an answer as to what to do with the 2 free BR movie thingy that says it's for the 1400.

As I was the first to report this unit was shipping to me BEFORE Christams a few weeks ago, I got mine from Crutchfield. I belive it has the same manufacture date, November '07 as the folks that got "the one" from BB, so I do not think there are any differences in the units, except I knew I was getting one

Now to play my 1st Blu....

Are there any known movies that will not play on this unit?

My Sony BDP300 does not like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Yes. I am anxious to hear the findings.

Me too, I currently have an RS1 and my 5000 is due Friday. I know eurotrance had the black dots with his RS1 (as well as his other displays) that, apparently, not one else has seen, at least in that form. I would love to know how the 5000 plays well in the same sandbox with the RS1.

I'll hook it up tonight after work and post my impressions. But first, in anticipation, I have a few questions.

The important info:

This will be going my home theater room... replacing a Panasonic BD-10A, which is moving to the living room.

The receiver: via HDMI to a Denon 5805CI. (Then to a Monitor Audio Gold Signature 9.2 speaker set up.)

The display: via HDMI (from the 5805) to a JVC DLA-RS1U projector. (projected onto a 161" Draper Onyx fixed screen)

The player is in the theater room and the receiver is in an adjoining equipment room with appropriate cables (HDMI, IR, RS232, Ethernet, Speaker Cable, etc.) in the walls and at the right locations.

The questions:

- Universal Remote codes? Has anyone tried the 1400 codes? I use an RTI T2-C.

- Die Hard 4? I read earlier in the thread that this disc was a problem. Has anyone tried to watch this entire movie yet? My wife and I were hoping to watch it tonight. (Probably still will... even if it's through the 10A.) ... However, now that we'll have HD-DVD in the theater, we might watch The Bourne Ultimatum. Any issues with that disc?

- SD aspect ratio and upconverting? Will it stretch 4:3 material? I like how my Panasonic keeps 4:3 material at 4:3.

- HD-DVD boot time? I'm mostly worried about the downloaded stuff. I have in my rec room an X-Box 360 with the HD-DVD addon. When Knocked Up came out, it took FOREVER to start up. After research, I found that it was downloading a bunch of stuff and I had to delete that stuff and play the movie with the network cable unplugged. Is this an issue with this player, too? (And other HD-DVD players?? I have no experience with any.)

- DVD/HD-DVD combo discs? Again, with HD-DVD on the 360, I experienced lots of issues with the combo discs... Superman Returns, Good Shepherd, etc. Has anyone had any issues with the combo discs?

- Of course, audio?? ... I've been following the thread and read the FAQ (keep up the good work)... and I'm still kinda confused. I'll wait until I hook it up and see what happens and THEN ask questions, if any, about settings and such.

- Returns? I've noticed that most of us got these players from Best Buy. Has anyone tried to return it for not being what it's advertised to be? I'm a pretty patient guy and as long as I'm not taking too many steps backwards from my Panasonic, I'm sure I'll wait. But just in case...

Thanks for any input.

-- Garrett

I used the BD-P1400 remote codes when I programmed by Harmony 890 remote. Only buttons I had the Harmony learn were Resume Play and Cursor.

Has anyone who currently owns it called the Samsung support line about the issues or questions?

I can tell you that this would not be the case. I may be wrong but the internal computer would not just randomly mix calculations up like that. That is like saying X = 12 and then go on to say X + 2 = 20. Something is messed up in that internal computer no doubt. But I do not believe it would display that. Even you gotta admit would never make sense in doing that.

I got mine all hooked up today and I am really liking it. I haven't gotten into tweaking all the audio and video stuff yet but I just sat down and watched a few movies and they looked and sounded great. Ratatouille looks amazing!!!!

I am not too worried about all the technical details I just wanted a combo player that looks and sounds good and this is more than enough for me.

No, but I skipped through about the first 10 chapters and had no problems.

Mostly not a problem for me. Had a Tosh A2 and yes HD DVD takes longer to start than standard DVD's but never ran into "forever". The 5000 is my first Blue Ray, Blue Ray takes longer than HD DVD to boot, but they do have some wonderful little "balls" moving on the screen to keep you amused.

No problems with combo disks.

I've had the player for a couple of hours. I have the 5000 hooked up to an Outlaw 990. No HDMI, however the 990 does do bass management, speaker distance, etc. for the analog inputs. I've gone back and forth listening to optical and analog on a couple of HD DVD's and BlueRays......rather not comment.....too many variables to muddle through. I will say I haven't come across anything that makes me want to return the player however.

Was someone asking about DVD+R a while back? Don't remember if it was answered. Sticker says it's compatible with BD-Rom, HD DVD, DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, Audio CD and CD-R. Not for DVD+R/+RW/-RAM disks.

Regards,
John

Remember, there is software. I am not saying that the internal Arithemtic Logic Unit is screwy. Considering that it seems this thing is running Linux, the programmer that used "df" or some such probably didn't make sure he knew if it was returning a value that was based on 1024 or 1000 and just goofed when scaling it to create the string that goes on the GUI.

Consider the following
Code:
unsigned int get_flash_remaining_in_MB(char *path)
{

  unsigned int space_avail = 0;

  space_avail = system_call_to_get_space (path); //assume response in 1k blocks
  return (space_avail / 1000); //divide by 1000 to make megabytes

}
This will always give a higher number than what we are used to seeing, because the standard is to factor by 1024, not 1000. If the total value was hard coded or derived from a different system call, then this could explain the programming error.
