BD-UP5000 Universal Player Samsung [OFFICIAL OWNERS THREAD] & FAQ - Page 276

Tonight was my 1st time trying to watch a non-widescreen SD on the 5K (The Wire season 2 -- now that it's gone, we're completely hooked thanks to Netflix!), and couldn't for the life of me figure out a way to get it to show other than widescreen -- the 5K's options under video size seem to have no effect -- I gather this is a stupid issue that's always been there that 1.3 didn't fix? (And my silly Panny AE2K projector won't fix it either ... grrr....)

If I'm wrong, I apologize (I did d/l the entire thread and search for 4:3...) and please tell me the fix! Thanks!

There is no fix, and there might not be one....Someone said that the 1500 "fixed" this, but prior to this all Samsung Blu-ray players did this. They didnt see it as an "error" rather a feature.....Luckily I dont watch that much 4:3 content or I might be more upset, but I have seen so much stretched stuff on TV that it might not even bother me that much...

Most of the issues seem to be HD DVD related. By the way I was watching a movie on SD called Unearth. The movie was a DVD copy but, it kept freezing on each chapter had to skip chapter in order to watch the entire movie. This is the first time I had this problem. I tried another DVD after that and had not problems at all.

I'm the guy who got the 1400 instead of the 5000 on the secondact deal. Talk about a purchase I totally regret right now. I have had the unit for 1 day shy of two weeks and am no farther along with second act than I was the first day I called them. My buddy who got in on the same deal got the 5000 with a 1400 manual in the box. I am going to call them today to see if I get anywhere, and if not, just throw in the towel.

I suggest you dispute with your credit card company and explain to them that second act did a bait and switch for your product and overcharged you for it. I hate companies that do not take responsibility for their own errors.

Oh, and then file a complaint with Better Business Bureau (although it may take half year to hear back or come up with any resolution, but it's good to mark it in their books that the company has some issues).

Now would be an opportune time for you and your friend to begin officially reporting Second Act to your state's Consumer Protection Agency, as well as contact your Atty Gen. Be sure to cc Second Act on the reports that you are filing, so they know you mean business. There is no WAY you, or anyone should be stuck with product that was incorrectly packaged or labeled!

Good luck!

I updated 1.3 firmware through CDR with no problems, so in answer to my previous question; I know where I'm at now. will now check out playing HD DVDs and the blu-ray DVDs I have ordered from amazon (I Robot and Sunshine), hopefully they all play well.

I just received my 2nd 5000 from Newegg today. It was an open box purchase I picked up for 399$ on Monday. My first 5000 was returned in mid/late April when the promised FW did not appear. It's going to replace a Toshiba A35 that I will now put in storage as insurance for the future. I'll let everyone know how it goes with the unit. I've just opened the box and it looks pristine-like new. All items remotes/cables/batteries/manual were packed neatly, and the item itself was bubble wrapped as well as still in factory styrofoam.
I will be upgrading the firmware shortly after I test the unit...

So far so good.

I've had more time to check more TrueHD discs & play with the settings. on the UP5000 set-up with all speakers set to small I noticed the the fronts seemed anemic when playing HD DVD of "Roy Orbison B&W Night" compared to my Toshiba HD-A1 thru analog out. I checked the Toshiba speakers settings & all where set at Large across the board. I listen & everything sounded fine. I switched my Sammy to Large front & Small back & when I played the disc, there was cracking & popping coming from front L & R speakers. I changed the FR & FL to small & left the center at large, which seemed to help. I am not sure if the Player or the amp are the source of the noise. Any ideas?

I just got a chance to test out the UP5000 I received from Second Act about a week ago. It was DOA (all disks I tried against it were unplayable). Called Samsung support and after they exhausted their script, they asked me to FAX my receipt to them. Once they get the receipt they will give me further instructions. Throughout the entire process, I got the distinct impression that they were annoyed at having to deal with me. I suspect I'll not be a customer of theirs going forward.

I think it's the problem of second act. maybe there were so many problems with their up5000 refurbs that samsung is getting TONS of calls with regards to them.

Others have had the same experience with setting the speakers to "Large" once changed to small it seems to fix the issue...Personally, I have never had an issue with setting all of my speakers to large and I have craptacular speakers, but I guess they do their job ...

For those that do come across this issue it is best to set your speakers to "small" for some reason this seems to fix the issue with popping that many people have had.....I have also seen people mixing and matching the sizes, which I have never done, either all small or all large, so this may also be an issue...

Did you try setting all of the speakers to large?

Hm,.... I am watching Star Wars/ The Empire Strikes Back/ in all its glory and all of a sudden the angle icon pops up Has anyone had that with SD DVDs? I know we had that with Ratatouille BD. Also, I've never had it happen before the last firmware, so could that be a bug? I'll check some other SD movies...and the rest of Star Wars
post #8268 of 13238
I didn't have that with ratatuoille or any SD DVDs so far. Can it be disabled by turning the message off in the settings?
Star Wars /A New Hope/. Angle icon pops up too....

no. It disappears by itself in a min or less...sometimes pops back on afterwards
post #8271 of 13238
The Return Of The Jedi- icon pops again.
On a different note.. The star wars is upconverted so well on my Samsung HL61 A750 that my friend thought I've got the movie on BD
p.s. The LG never did such a great job.. so, again, I'm so happy that i waited out the firmware from samsung
...Episode I... no icon..

That's because you picked up the player relatively recently. In earlier firmwares, this was a known problem. "Bonus View" comes up now with Sunshine, which is another similar minuscule bug.

Very, very impressive. Now put up some BH200 upconversion stills as a comparison (probably a good idea to make a new thread) if you can please.
I'll put some pics from my Sony xbr4... and Indiana Jones.... awesome.
as far as comparison between the LG and Sammy, it is a good idea to start a thread, as there's so many questions about "which one?" Feel free to start one Vinnie, as I have an early day tomorrow... I have some pictures from the time I had an LG. but at least I have a PS3 and a Toshiba A-35 now and I'll put some photos to compare the upscaling to the 5k
post #8277 of 13238
Ah, ok...couldn't remember if you had kept the Bh200 or not. I would create the thread but I would rather someone who has both units to do it so they can post comparison pics in the first post. Hopefully, someone can rise to the occasion!

I noticed two pops from the surrounds while watching The Invasion BD w/ True HD last week. In the 5k, I had all speakers set to large, except the rears are set to none. I'm thinking maybe the 5k tries to re-route the rear speakers to the surrounds on a 7.1 track, so if I set them to large, I'll just lose the data for the rears and possibly not have the pops. I haven't had a chance to test it yet.

I figured out why Semi Pro was not playing on my player. I rented this movie again today and had the same problem movie will not play. It was freezing during the disc menu. I would hit play and nothing the movie just stayed and did nothing. I hit the disc menu button again and WOOP their it is the movie started playing without any problems. Little weird none of my other blu rays have this problem.
It's a New Line thing....I'm thinking anything from 2008 is susceptible but can't be sure without more thorough testing. Orphanage froze right after the logo and prior to the menu load...so this may be slightly different.
