I purchased a Samsung factory refurb from Second Act a coupla' weeks ago. It included a 90-day Samsung warranty document. I also purchased a three-year third party warranty. I got the 5K the day before the 1.3 firmware was released.

yeah IDK because I have never done business with them just saw they had a low price.
I just looked them up and they sound real shady.
Sorry I linked to them I would not risk it either.

Doug

Have you tried pausing the image? I would think if the noise stops fluctuating, then you could confidently conclude what you're seeing is film grain (which is very much likely, CE3K being the age that it is).

IIRC Ce3K did have grain present in it, so what doug is seeing may in fact be grain and no the "dots" that we saw reports of earlier on.....I actually ahvent seen reports of the "dots" for some time though.....I should be able to test out this title though sometime later next week I got a great deal on it from J&R

Yup, i saw the preview on Run Lola Run and noticed considerable grain.

I got my refurb in the mail yesterday. It was everything I could have hoped for. Upgraded to the latest firmware and have no problems playing any Fox BD+ titles. All of the blu-rays, HD DVDs and DVDs I've tried so far play fine. TrueHD works with the analog outs too and I have all the speakers set to large. No problems. I am very impressed with this player so far.

I have an odd question. I wound up with sealed boxes of both the HD DVD and Blu-ray versions of Blade Runner. The HD DVD being $21.95 and the Blu-ray being $14.95. I have (3) HD DVD capable players and only the UP5000 for Blu-ray. Other than the price difference is there any advantage/playback issues specific to the BD-UP5000? All things being equal, which would everyone else keep For the UP5000?

Thanks!

AFAIK both the BR and HD versions use the exact same VC-1 encode and TrueHD audio track, so playing on the 5000 with the latest firmware there should be no difference whatsoever between the two. The only real question is if the $7 premium on the HD version is worth being able to watch it on your other three players?
Eventually, BR players will be "cheaper" and everyone will have 2-3 of them just like they do now with sd dvd players. BR will be the new standard. Personally I would keep the BR version.

Yes, they are the EXACT same encodes for both audio and video as well as features. I just didn't know if the UP5000 had any playback glitches that were known of with either version. I'm sure they both "look" identical. One copy has to go back!

I guess I'll start the repair process tomorrow on this Nov-07 build. Doesn't say much for Samsung quality.

Well, these are made in China. I wonder why they don't make them in Korea, like LG.

This Sammy is the only combo player that has 5.1 analog outputs. So I can go this route with a refurb player for about $350.

OR

Choice 2 is upgrade the receiver to one that switches HDMI, pick up a BluRay only player and let the players do the decoding and pass it through that way. Total cost probably closer to $700-$1000.

I'm leaning up5000 but reluctant to pull the trigger...

I have an A35 and just picked up a Sammy again (I returned one pre 1.3 FW) and am very glad I did. The picture is superb, and although you might have problems with a disc here and there, I think you'd be happy with the purchase. I'd also upgrade the receiver so you could bitstream, but that's just me.

Good luck!

I just finished watching the BD of Blade Runner on my UP5000 with no problems.

$298 = $300 is still too expensive as a normal purchase for most people, especially in such economy. It's gotta get to $99-129 to have more people buy it.

I have found a curiosity with this player and certain movies. I have watched two movies recently: Rendition and Stargate, both of these movies have subtitles when a foreign language is spoken. I noticed that the subtitles don't play when they are supposed to. I have to turn on English Subtitles completely (which displays the English subtitle even when they are speaking English - very annoying) in order to understand the movie.

Am I doing something wrong? Is this a known issue?

It's an authoring issue. You can get it to display the subtitles only when they are speaking a foreign language by pressing the subtitle button and selecting the second english option.

Well. I finally figured I better unpack my second 5K, as it's been sitting in the box for nearly two weeks. I bought my first one new from Circuit City back in 12/08. It was an 11/07 build, and once I upgraded to FW 1.0, it worked perfectly. So perfectly that I didn't hesitate to buy a second one for the bedroom when Second Act had the refurbished ones for $299, at the end of last month.

So I was getting ready to upgrade both to FW 1.3, but since I had yet to unpack the refurb (12/07 build), something told me that I should test it out before upgrading. Well glad I did-

First I put in "3:10 To Yuma" (which plays great on my first 5K). Everything appeared fine until I decided to skip chapters. When I did this I heard what sounded like a quick "static pop" in my speakers- it did this almost every time I advanced chapters. I thought maybe it was speaker setting thing, so I stopped play to check the 5K settings in the menu. First, I wanted to see what FW it had? I was able to navigate to the appropriate screen, saw it was 1.2, but then the screen froze and I had to power it off.

Restarted it, even did the FF reset just to start fresh. Put the movie back in- it appeared to be starting up normal, but now I couldn't get the 5K menu to come on. It would show "main menu" on the 5K display, but the menu wouldn't appear on my TV.

I tried starting the movie, which started fine except for a few more of those "static pops". Then I tried to jump to a scene. Once I did this, the picture froze on an "instruction menu" for the extras, but I could hear the sound of the scene playing. I had to stop the thing again. Power off; unplug; power on. Now I couldn't even get a picture.

Checked my HDMI cable- even plugged it back in to my good 5K (it worked fine). Plugged it back in to the refurb, and still no picture. This should have been enough for me to just pack the thing up, but I wanted to torture myself more I guess. So I powered it off and unplugged it for a few minutes.

Tried it again- this time "3:10" froze on the "loading menu" (you know, those little dots that move across the screen-well, they stopped moving!). I ejected the disc and decided to put in "Live Free Or Die Hard" and it appeared to be working just fine: loaded quick; skipped through the previews; film started; I could fast forward. Wait a minute- what are all those grainy scratches on the screen?!

Went to the 5K menu (which came on fine now) and I was getting the same "scratches" across the blue menu screen too! Then the menu screen froze again and that was enough for me. Went to pack the thing up and the bottom of it was REALLY hot!

Anyway, guess I'll be contacting Second Act ASAP!

At least I have one good 5K.....knock on wood!

You should still upgrade it. Wouldn't hurt. I had similar problems with my nov build, but all is working great with 1.3 firmware.

They all get "REALLY hot" on the bottom...check your November build after you've had it on for a sufficient amount of time. These refurbished units have been a hit or miss mess, though.

Well, I suppose it wouldn't hurt; especially since SA doesn't appear to have any more. . I'll give it a try.
Just seemed like so many problems as opposed to just one or two. Were you getting those problems with 1.2 or an earlier FW? Thanks for the suggestion.

Actually, I did do this and my good one didn't seem as hot.

Well, Second Act was quick to respond in just a few hours. Here was their reply:

Thank you for your correspondence. We are sorry to hear that your bluray player is not performing as expected. We will check our stock as this item appears to be out of stock. We will confer with our warehouse regarding the availability of this unit. In the event that this unit is out of stock, we will explore other replacement options with you. If none ot the available options will meet your needs, we will cheerfully issue you a full refund.

So the question is, if they do not come up with another (which there is a good chance that they wont) should I return it or send it to Samsung? I am not in any huge hurry since my other 5K works great and this was for the bedroom.

Also to note: I did purchase the 3-year extended warranty from SA when I bought this thing.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I received an e-mail from the third-party warranty provider, Consumer Priority Service before I received my refurb from Second Act. Have you registered with CPS yet? The e-mail from CPS stated:

"Please be advised that your service plan requires registration within 30 days of your dated invoice. You will need your product's serial number to complete the registration process."

Registration was painless, and something of a confidence builder. If you have not yet registered, you should do so.

I have a 5000 coming from secondact on tuesday (I accidentally got a 1400 and they are replacing it for me). I pray it works right. After all of the glitches in these Blu-ray players, I am sure glad I just bought a PS3 for a backup. Works like a charm on every single thing I throw at it, and quickly too. But I really want the 5000 to handle mt HT duties because the Reon will supposedly give me a noticeably better picture on my 100" screen with SD DVDs. But the most important thing in that system is functionality and compatability. The last thing I need is for my player to lock up or refuse to play a movie while I have guests over. If the 5000 starts glitching up or behaving badly, it will go in the bedroom with the 46XBR4.

Problem with $198 player...because PS3 is $299 with the same promotion.

It's saying the Magnavox is gathering dust...

ILLBEBECK - Is the extended warranty through Samsung or Second Act only? If Samsung, i'd probably send it directly to Samsung. Second act most likely won't receive any more stock except for the returns from other unsatisfied customers.

I receievd that e-mail as well and no, I actually haven't registered it yet . I had been waiting to try this player out first and now I was debating whether do so yet? Especially since there is a chance I might get a replacement unit (with a different serial #). And, if I returned this unit altogether, I'd hate to think that I paid for a warranty if I didn't even have the product! I still have another 11 days to do so. Thanks for the suggestion!

The extended warranty was purchased through SA and is done by an outside warranty service. I believe that the Samsung factory warranty does cover this unit for the first 90 days.

I agree with your theory on SA receiving any more of these, which is what presents my dilemma. Per Jascias' suggestion, I am updating the FW to 1.3 right now to see if anything changes? I just finally updated my good 5K to 1.3 painlessly- took less than ten minutes total to burn a disc and update the player!

UPDATE: The update to 1.3 on the refurb was effortless and quick as well, but did not seem to change anything. Once it was done, the 5K menu froze up after a minute or two of usage and I had to power it down. Put in "3:10" again, and the "static pops" appeared to be gone, but then I figured out why- all of the sound was now gone!! Got to the "Rambo" trailer and besides not having any sound, the screen froze about two seconds in. Yup- this one needs to go back somewhere!
