All I get with the 5000 is once you press the proceed button it goes blank than it will default back to 1080P/60. I tried to do a left right enter on the remote since maybe the screen is hidden but no luck.

I have the same TV and mine worked fine with 1080p/24fps and firmwares 1.3 & 1.4. My UP5000 was connected directly to the HL61A750. The problem must be your Onkyo Receiver.

Try to connect the UP5000 HDMI output directly to your TV.

I think he already narrowed it down in an earlier thread by trying direct connection to the TV. My next guess would be HDMI cable...if not, the defect must be in his BD-UP5000.

I'm considering purchasing one of these from a local BB. How much should I try to get and open box (possible display) unit for? I think if I do it I might actually consider an extended warranty.

Also, could someone break down any current issues with this unit. I browsed several pages but was hoping not to have to read all 330+ pages of the thread. What I have seen is some people having issues with firmware 1.4 (some not). Some people (or is that all people) having issues with newer Fox movies. Am I missing anything?

Thanks!

John, I purchased my unit 10/23/08 (openbox) from CC. It has never played Blu rays (I've tried 25-30) only std and HD-DVD. My unit is currently at samsung (NJ) for repair which they tell is completed and now testing. However, reading through this and other forums I believe the problem is a dead or defective Blu ray laser. I will confirm with Samsung what part(s) they actually replaced and report back to you. Luckily, my 90 day warranty is still active till the end of Feb. Also I checked spare parts for the 5000 at Samsung and it appears that the main & video pcb's are no longer available so it would again point to laser. Good luck...

Firmware is clearly the main issue, but if you look at ebay there are a number of these units sold broken that will not read Blu ray's, HD-DVD's or any disks.
Mine is currently in repair at Samsung (will not read Blu ray) that I purchased open box at CC for $199.00 which was a great deal considering the unit sold for $ 449.00 -> $799.00 retail. Sears still shows it in stock new for $799.00!
This unit plays Std dvd with incredible picture quality and HD-DVD equal to my Toshiba HD-A2. I am waiting for my repaired unit return for a blu ray comment). I would recommend this if you can get a great deal.

I've had a refurnished player since May and have been genuinely happy. As the previous poster said, the DVD upconversion is stellar. At this point I've played many a disk on it without a hitch--DVD, Blu and HD DVD. (Just finished the first season of Heroes HD DVD, actually.)

The gotchas with this player are lack of consistent firmware updates. That may or may not be an issue for you depending on whether you have problematic disks. (Of which there are few.)

The one issue to check right away, though, is whether the player will play any of the early Fox disks--Sunshine, Live Free or Die Hard, Juno (there are others). If it won't then it needs to be repaired.

Hope that helps!

After 10 pages of reading my head is aching. Is it because I am reading about continued problems with BD playback on this unit? NO - Its because I just read 10 pages from my monitor.

I cannot find the download link for firmware v1.4 and am wondering if I should bother considering I can play BD through my PS3...my main reason for having the BD5K is for my vast HDDVD collection. I have had very few problems with HDDVD, am very satisfied with SD playback quality (The Incredibles - WOW - Incredible) but would like to play a BD in the event that the PS3 is being used. Any advice? Should I wait for a v1.5 release?

Please provide a d/l link for v1.4 and any feedback from others that are frustrated with this player's BD performance. Also include experience with HD and SD. Thanks in advance.

Thanks 360_4_EVER! and mmcgin55. That some good info. I used to work at BB and one of the managers at this store has given me good deal on open box, demo stuff in the past so I'm hoping so again. If I can ever get him on the phone. He wasn't there the past two times I was in the store and I don't want drive out there again without knowing.

I'll likely use this in the living room where I don't have a full equipment setup. Just so I can have the one unit for all three disc formats...maybe. If it's that good I might need it on my main system.

I had to tryout about a half dozen of these units before I found one that has turned out to be pretty stable. I had all kinds of problems on the first ones including, disc trays that wouldn't open, couldn't access the internet, and with several players various discs wouldn't play. Had red screen of death on "Sunshine", wouldn't play "I Robot" etc.

I too am considering getting another one from a BB that has two being used as units to demo flat screens. My fear is that they have been played 8 to 12 hours everyday for months, may or may not play many more disks than the one in the unit, and Samsung will not repair them in many cases, replacing them with much less quality players that won't play HD DVD. I suspect these demo units are multiple returns that probably couldn't be fixed for specific conditions that would not show up as a demo unit in the store. If you read through this thread you'll find many folks have had the same mixed information from Samsung's support. One guy will tell you one thing and the next support guy will tell you just the opposite or they stay with their script and tell you nothing very helpful. The manager at the BB reluctantly offered to let me have one for $150 but there are no cables, box, manual, or remote. I offered $100 but he hasn't come down yet. Be sure they will at least refund your money and give you plenty of time to audition it. Don't expect to be able to exchange it for another like player. If you have the time to mess with it and don't mind the trouble then go for it. If you get lucky and get a unit that works it is worth the effort and time esp. if it is a good price. The unit has super sound (although not fully supported as advertised yet) and super picture even on regular DVDs. Good luck!
Thanks for additional information James.

What did you mean when you said "The unit has super sound (although not fully supported as advertised yet) " Is there some sound formats it doesn't do? I'm fine with just bitstreaming the HD sound formats if that's the issue.

My goal is $100. We'll see. I just picked up a Memorex 2511 Blu-Ray a few weeks ago brand new for $100. It had some troubles with some discs (newer Fox of course) but they just released a firmware update and so far it did play Max Payne. I had thought about returning it and buying the Samsung but now if I get the Samsung for the price I want I will probably keep both and just move my A3 to the living room with the Memorex. Though actually it would be easier to use the Samsung there. One device, three formats. If I did use the Samsung in the LR then I would only be using stereo sound.

I just received my BD-UP5000 back from Samsung repair (NJ) and low and behold it plays all disks perfect !!! I called the repair facility to ask what was done and they told me they replaced the loader. Now I finally see why everyone feels this player is top shelf! I admit I was concerned that the unit would not be repaired and they would offer a refurbished 1500 as a replacement. So I would give Samsung repair 10!!!
So if you can still get an open box under warranty I would do it since I have had good luck !!!
Beautiful news...I would still recommend this player over the BH200 unless you need region-free capabilities.
Hey all.

I just purchased a used BD-UP5000 off of eBay and I am having a few issues with it at the moment so I decided to register here and see if you kind folks can help me out.

Firstly, when the unit is powered on, during the load process there are several mechanical loud "grinding/whirring" noises that come from the player. Once the unit has initially powered on and loaded the noise seems to go away (so far) until the player is shut off and then turned on again. It doesn't sound particularly healthy, however it could just be nothing. Is this normal behaviour for the player during startup, or is this something I should potentially be worried about?

Secondly, I do not currently own an HDTV so I cannot use HDMI (yet) so initially I tried hooking up the player to my TV with Component cables (RGB), however my TV is not receiveing a signal. I know that both the TV and cables work fine as this is how I had my DVD player hooked up. So it must be an issue with the player. Standard Video (single yellow cable) works fine, but of course is not as desirable as Compenent. Is this a common problem/issue that can be easily fixed or is my particular unit defective?

I still have to test the other output methods (S-Video, HDMI) before I'm willing to send it back and ask for a refund. These things are hard to come by these days so I don't want to jump to conclusions yet. If the Component output is screwed then I would probably still keep the unit for a partial refund since HDMI is what REALLY matters. However, I'd rather have a player that works 100% properly.

Yes, the startup/load noise is normal.

That's good to hear but they wanted double+some compared to what I was hoping. I told him I'll be back in month and if it's still there we'll talk again. I don't have that many HD-DVD's so it's not a big deal for me. I may just get another PS3 when they prices drop in April (hope that happens).

I expect you have to set the output to 480i or p so that your TV will recognize the signal. Did you try that?

The player probably automatically downconverts to the s-video and composite outputs, but it's probably outputting an HD resolution to the component outputs.

Hmm, I never thought about that. Ironically enough I was fiddling around in the Setup menu last night to see if there any settings specificly for component output and thought about changing the overall output quality, but then decided against it figuring that probably wasn't the problem. I'll have to try that when I get home tonite and I'll let you know how it works out.

I've heard some noisy grinding on both of mine, one of which has seen very little use.
Well, after going through the manual a little more thoroughly I found out that you can actually "reset" the player. After doing this the component now works beautifully. I didn't check to see if this actually adjusted the output, but it does work now so that's all that matters.

I purchased mine on ebay and it didn't have a manual. What is this RESET feature and does it then revert back to the original firmware?
No, it only resets settings to factory condition. It involves holding the fast forward button on the player itself for about 5 seconds but I don't recall the specifics. The manual was made available online...

I just joined the BD-UP5000 club! Went into circuit city looking for an LG200 that I had seen weeks ago, no remote, scratches, and $280, no budging on price. Thought about it but not for $280 in an unknown condition. Hoping the price had gone down since last time I was there.

So today, the LG200 was gone, looked around and found the BD-UP5000 sitting under a TV in a large home theater setup display. The TV was currently being fed from the store feed, not the Samsung. Priced at $219with all accessories. Jackpot. Brought an HD-DVD disc to test the machine, turned it on, popped it open and the Samsung Demo Disc was inside. Everything worked. Went to checkout, and it rang up $177!!!! I'm hoping that the machine was rarely used, as the store feed was probably utilized more often. And they let me keep the Demo Disc, cool.

I registered the product as soon as I got home and received a Free 3 months extended warranty by doing so. Build date is December 2007. Havent' hooked it up yet, but once I do, i will check the firmware and update to 1.3. So I'm a pretty happy fella right now. Happy Valentines day to me.
Congrats! Make sure to try a Blu-ray disc ASAP (I assume the Samsung demo disc was a Blu-ray?), as defective players have been known to work with HD DVDs but not BDs.

Seconded. Get it fixed while it's still under warranty if at all possible, especially since you won't have an extended warranty from CC. My friend tried to get one at that same price after I saw it at a local CC, but he was too late! I should have bought it for him while I was there, oh well! I still love mine!

Anyone heard anything with regards to a firmware upgrade??? I think it's about time they brought something out!!
I agree but if they're working on the same timeline as last year, we're not due anything until May. :|
