I have a fully functioning 5K .Mine works great. If they gave me a new 2500 for my 5k I'd take it in a heart beat.. But I don't use my 5k for HD.. only BD and SD..
Yea, that depends upon how many HD DVDs you own and how important HD DVD playback is to you. There are still many HDs not yet available in BD.
HD DVD playback is pretty important.....I have about 70-80 HD DVD discs compared to about 20-25 BDs. However, I do have two Toshiba HD-A30s and one HD-A3 which all work perfectly (one A30 is currently boxed up as a backup player, the A3 serves as my bedroom player for HD and SD discs).

I have been seriously toying with the idea of buying another HDTV for my basement and turning into a "theater" type of room, so I guess I would have to take the plunge on another BD player at some point anyway and break out the A30 from storage. I guess being offered a 2500 is better than a 1500 or another lesser unit - I'll read up on the other 2500 thread and see if there is anything else interesting the player might be able to offer, just in case I can't get another 5000 or a refund.

I recently had this problem in reverse as I was totally annoyed while watching Flight of the Concords on HBO. I couldn't hear lyrics during their song numbers. Come to find out, the babysitter turned off LEFT and RIGHT front speakers so I was missing the songs as the vocals are not played through the center channel. Make sure all speakers are engaged from your reciever.

So upgrading to 1.4 will fix this? Is there any sort of hard reset that can "reset" the box to see if that work? I don't think it's reheating as it's never changed locations, since it came out, on my shelf and never had this problem before. Yay $800 player!

I also had 1.3 initially and had similar issues with skipping and freezing after a almost half a year of perfect use. It started to concern me since I thought my drive was going bad but after I installed 1.4, everything is working perfectly. What is difficult to gauge is if my solution will work for you. Other members have reported bad experiences with 1.4 and just as many have no issues upgrading. If I were you, I wouldn't have any reservations about updating to 1.4, your unit is already on the fritz anyway. Just keep the 1.3 disc handy in case you need to revert back. You can try a reset and as foxbat mentioned it's pressing and holding down the fast forward button. It's somewhere in the manual and I believe you do this when you turn on the unit. Try the options and see if any of the work.

From a more selfish standpoint, I'm also looking for some advice regarding Samsung's suggested resolution......

Just an FYI for those considering the repair route, I posted here a few weeks ago regarding an open box BD-UP5000 I had purchased from Best Buy. It would not load any BD discs (except for my copy of The Prestige, which was strange), and it would play most HD DVDs and SD DVDs discs, but the player seemed to have a lot of trouble making it all the way through an HD DVD without skipping/freezing somewhere in the middle.

I decided to try to have the unit repaired, since I was very impressed with the Reon upconverting and the picture quality for HD content looked very good as well. I also really wanted one player that could play any disc in order to take up less space and solve my HDMI input problem (my TV has three inputs, but between cable TV box, my SD DVD surround sound system, an HD DVD player and a PS3, I had four HDMI connected units, so I would have to switch between the PS3 and HD DVD player from the side HDMI port depending on what movie I was watching).

Long story short, Samsung sent an email the other day offering a BD-P2500 unit, as apparently they can't fix the 5000. I haven't accepted the replacement unit yet, as I really don't want a BD standalone unit. I guess it's somewhat fortunate that the 2500 has Reon upconversion and supposed to have very good BD picture quality, but I'm bummed over not having the 5000. I'm going to call Samsung and make one last ditch effor to see if I can have the 5000 replaced, or see if they will refund my $225 or whatever I paid for it.

If I can't get a refund, should I be satisfied with taking a 2500 instead?

After reading a few success stories for repairs, I was very optimistic about getting a repair. I went to a Circuit City and found a unit with a bad BD laser but could read HD DVDs fine. Bought it hoping for a repair and now the Samsung site is indicating a replacement will be sent. Have not received an email yet stating they will replace it will the 2500 but that's what I assume I'll be getting. I'm probably going to accept the offer since I want the Reon chip and I have a Samsung TV so I can pair the two together. Plus I only paid $49 for the "broken" 5K. Still have my HD-A35 so it's not an issue for HD DVD playback. I'm using a BH200 now and will probably sell that one since I have another practically new one sitting in the closet and I can get a couple hundred for the BH200 I'm currently using.

Did you send your unit into the California facility for repairs? I believe the place is called KOAMBRA in Long Beach. Would love to hear back from you if Samsung somehow gives you 5k.
My unit was sent to CVE Inc. in New Jersey. Much closer to my home geographically than CA, although I'm not sure if that's how Samsung determines what facility the units are sent to.

As a follow-up, I called Samsung while at work today to see if anything could be done about tracking down another 5000 or getting a refund (very slim chance, I know). The customer service rep was very polite and said that they would be passing me off to the "executive customer service department" since I was trying to inquire about another 5000 instead of accepting the 2500 replacement. After about an hour on hold (had the phone on speaker as I got some real work done), decided to hang up and give up. Maybe this is Samsung's way of just getting me to accept the replacement 2500?

I might give it one more try on the phone tomorrow, just to see, but I guess the 2500 is better than nothing. Would have loved to have one player that would play any disc thrown at it, but I can't see myself rolling the dice on another open box unit. I did run across an open box LG BH200 at a local Circuit City being liquidated, but the unit has hundreds of scratches and didn't look like it had a remote, and they still wanted $200+ for it. Seemed way too steep given the condition, even if it would be possible to collect the $75 refund from LG for not having BD Live.

To those who have also sent 5000s for repair, I did receive two or three emails from Samsung stating that they were having trouble finding parts for my unit and that the repair was delayed before they finally offered the 2500 for replacement. If you have received similar emails, good chance that the 2500 offer is coming soon.....
Thanks for reporting in. Try again at speaking with someone in their executive CSR department. I was able to get someone on the phone last time pretty quickly, within 5 minutes. This is my second time at having a 5K repaired and the last time they did offer me a refund so I'm fairly certain they'd be willing to give you a refund for the receipt's price if you told them you needed the HD DVD playback. Good luck.

Doesn't the 2500 retail for about $350?

Anyone else running 1.3 have problems with SD DVDs at the layer change? I've had mine lock at the layer change on SDs. It works fine on BDs and HD DVDs all the time (and I've thrown quite a few at it), but I rarely watch SDs on it and it has frozen at the layer change on at least two thus far.

Hmmm. I rarely watch SD anymore, too. However, we watched Secret Life of Bees (I know, the BD is on the way from Amazon, but my daughter's friend lent her the SD last week) and I didn't notice a layer change pause at all. However, I was in and out of the room. Wife and daughter didn't complain about anything locking up.

When I do watch SD, I usually use the Oppo. The PQ is about the same, it loads much faster, 4:3 is displayed properly, and there is zero layer change pause.

In regards to the disc freezing problem that some have experienced, has anyone sent their 5k in for repair? If so, did the unit work ok afterwards?

My unit now has this problem. At first it was hit or miss, but now seems to happen every time I play a movie. After a time, the playback begins to stutter, then freezes up completely. Movie plays fine on my PS 3 or A2. I have the player in the open, and in the basement where it is very cool.

The player is now out of warranty. I do have a PS3 and an A2 for movies. Would it be worth getting this player repaired at my expense? There are no repair facilities close to my location (Virginia).

Thank you for your comments.

Did you try flashing back to an early fw? I reverted back to 1.3 as I found 1.4 falls flat on performance when in a movie thon.

I have gone back and forth between 1.3 and 1.4 at least 4 or 5 times. At first I was convinced that 1.4 was the problem. Then it started happening with 1.3. Now it happens when either version has been flashed. I am no longer sure where the problem lies, but it is beginning to look like an equipment problem in my case.

Well, it's official for me... they're sending me a 2500... I'll probably keep it and sell off one of my BH200s

I should note I only had this happen on two movies. Family Man and That Darn Cat. I should note that Family Man is probably a defective disc, the clock counter skips in 2 second increments when I try and play it back on this player. I think it was one of my A2s or the BDP-S1 I tried it in the same night and it wouldn't read it either. The only players that play the DVD are my PS2 and a computer, perhaps a bad disc.

That Darn Cat played OK in an A2, froze at what was probably the layer change in this player.

I should also note that it plays HD media fine both HDs and Blu-rays and I've watched many up as late as today without a hitch. So your guess is as good as mine. I rarely watch anything but HD material, since the bulk of my collection is split between HD material and LDs, but I still have a couple of hundred DVDs floating around and just so happened to run into problems a time or two.

Last night I did a factory reset, then loaded version 1.3. I then played a movie, the SD version of the new The Time Machine. Played with no problems. I have my fingers crossed. But I will say, that in the past the unit has played 2 or 3 movies with no problem, then started acting up. Will see how it goes.

Quick update.....I actually didn't have time this week to call back, and someone from Samsung actually left a message on my cell phone this afternoon. Looks like they will either give me the 2500 or a money refund. Now I just have to figure out if $225 + PA sales tax is a good deal for a 2500 and I actually want it, or if I should just get my money back....
Watched Truman Show today on Blu-ray, again no hitch. Problem is almost certainly SD DVD, and or the discs used.

Ppl are snatching those 25x0s for $350 as fast as they apear on store shelves. $225+ tax is for a new player is a good deal. If it is refurbished, not so much. 2500/2550 will probably be the last Samsung player that still uses Reon HQV chips and they are now discontinued. New Samsungs that start to show up in stores reportedly no longer use Reon.

Since doing the reset and flashing with 1.3, I have played 4 movies with no problem.

After the first movie played ok, I moved the unit back upstairs to where my main setup is located. This time, I installed the player in an open A/V rack instead of the tv stand it was in. This new rack is open on all sides. I also started using an 80mm external exhaust fan. There appears to be a fan in the 5k with the exhaust port in the back of the unit. I placed my exhaust fan up against this opening. I do not know yet if this has solved my problem, but so far so good.

My fingers are still crossed. I really want this unit to work since it has such a great picture.

Thanks, Vinnie... I'll give it a try!

Hi vinnie 97 and all BD-UP5000 owners,

If you go to the "BD-UP5000 problem discs" thread, on the last page at Link #575,
you will find a new and easier solution of how to get rid of the "Bonus View" logo on your
screen.
If someone can reproduce that Link directly here, that will be nice for all owners, I just don't know how to do it.

Cheers to all,

_______ Bob

Note: The quick solution is --> You press "Audio" on your remote, then you press "Cancel",
also on your remote, Voila!, "Bonus View" logo is gone!

How about a copy/paste?

"Hi vinnie97,

I will like to add a simpler solution regarding #5> "Bonus View".
Here it is: Best solution = Every time a movie is playing with "Bonus View" feature, and that the "Bonus View" appears on the top left corner of your screen; Press the button on your remote marked "Audio" (on the bottom left of your remote), then press the button on your remote marked "cancel", and voila!, with just two clicks on your remote, it takes care of the problem.

Just remember that each time you do something different than normal playback (skip chapter, fast forward, rewind...) the "Bonus View" logo will reappear, so you have to repeat the two steps above > Press "Audio", then press "cancel". Voila! That's it! Problem solved from the easiest way possible.

Cheers to all,

_______ Bob

Note: This works no matter which firmware version you are running."

Hi laserjock II,

I don't even know how to do a copy/paste. Thanks for doing so.

And also, instead of pressing Exit, press "Cancel".

So, you press "Audio" first, and then you press "Cancel".

Bob

P.S. Hey laserjock II, if you can delete the copy/paste, I already fix my original post with the right correction. Will be greatly appreciated. So you can substitute the older post for the new post correctly revised.

Unfortunately I am not the only person in my house, and I need to be considerate of everyone else in the household as well, alot of my movie watching is done late at night, and I don't think it would be cool to keep everyone else awake just because I wanna blast the surround sound, LOL. So I just stick with my bunny ear speakers and enjoy the movies the best I can.

It's definitely easier to hear the dialog over the sound effects when there's a center speaker. So you may be able to be more considerate by keeping the volume a little lower! The subwoofer of a good 5.1 setup can be switched off separately, which should help keep the sound out of the other rooms during late-night viewing.

Or, there's always headphones. That's what I use when my girlfriend is busy doing homework nearby.

Hi laserjock II,

Thank you for the adjustment on your post.
Now this will be of great help to all owners of the BD-UP5000.
