My Marantz 64" CRT RPTV is dead. (sniff)

Still waiting to hear back from Marantz support (as it is Saturday), but my 6.5 year old Marantz PV6480 is dead. Unit powers on (power LED illuminates and the fans start to run), but there is no picture and I can't even bring up the menus. Not really sure what happened, but my kids said they were watching it and then all went black.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? Bad video board? Anybody else have a similar experience and know what repairs might cost. I hope it is reasonable as I have always geeked out on those 9" guns in this baby.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear that. Believe this model is very similar to my Philips 64PH9905, acquired in mid-2000. Try unplugging for a few minutes, which I believe reboots the microprocessor. Check the owner's manual for a few blank screen tips. Suspect if it were something serious like the main power supply or high voltage section you'd have seen some initial glitches before an abrupt blackout. Assume there's no audio either.

This might not actually apply: Assume the black screen applies to every input, including, if the Marantz has them, signals from built-in ATSC/NTSC tuners. Can't switch modes properly with no visible menu, but with inputs on most input options, maybe cycling through 'invisible' menu modes on the remote (if they included a Pronto) might bring up something, pointing to a small-signal input problem. I bought the service CDROM for mine, but owners manuals offer more practical tips. Got some early servicing on mine under the warranty--newer ultraquiet fans, plus two new boards that fixed failure to sync with 480p DVD inputs. Servicing for these big older models generally seems outrageous costwise, but maybe you can pin down someone locally who won't automatically charge hundreds. -- John

Thanks John,

All good suggestions. Yes, the PV6480 is very similar to your set. I have left the unit unplugged for a while with no luck. The owners manual is surprisingly unhelpful in this situation. I currently, only use the component video input and don't have any audio going to the set, but will have plenty of time to try that today as there we are all shut in with a big snow storm.

Okay. My rather obtuse second 'graph implied, indirectly, you might get a blank screen with the failure of an input. Mostly use only HD YPbPr, too, feeding it with a 4-in-1-out Zektor switcher. Can't recall if it has arisen, but believe I'd get a blank screen with a failure of the Zektor input. Besides HD YPbPr, also run S-video directly from my cable box to my Philips, which displays the cable box channel when I switch the RPTV to AUX2 (S-video). Failure of internal audio, too, from a possible built-in tuner, might point to a power supply failure. -- John

Was watching a show when the picture went black. I noticed a nasty electrical smell ........... like something had "fried". The fans still run and the power switch led is lit, but no video at all. Any ideas? I loved this beast and hate to lose it!!!!!!!!!

Ask Mr. Bob for help in the "don't dump your CRT RPTV!!!!" thread.

HI Dennis,

This sounds similar. I was not watching the set when it died (children were), but not one mentioned a smell. T

I had to pay about $100 for a Philips Authorized service person to come to my house and look at the set. Problem appears to be a high-voltage power supply. Marantz/Philips has spend several weeks looking for a part and unfortunately it is (no longer available). It appears that going through regular channels has pretty much ended. Right now, Philips has said they will offer me a discounted replacement on a different TV, but for me that is really disappointing.

I am afraid unless a miracle happens, this set will be sent to the CRT graveyard. However, I still have it and am really in no hurry to dump it until I know all my alternatives. Unlike the guy in Mr. Bob's "don't dump your CRT RPTV!!!!" thread, I would never take a sledge hammer to it.

However, if you get you set looked at and the part needed is different than I need (and also NLA) perhaps one of us could sacrifice his set for the other. I just fixed my Hitachi Plasma by buying a part on Ebay. If I end up dumping this set, I would be happy to help you out or perhaps vice versa.

Good luck.

Noticed that this parts source sells a HV scan section for my Philips year-2000 64PH9905. But if a Marantz service guy can't track down the part, doubt if it's suitable. If it happened here, as a last step, I'd try tracking down the specific part(s) within the HV section with an ohm meter (power off). It's rare that you can't find substitute power transistors, etc., although certain ICs, say in the low-voltage video section, might require exact replacements. You'd just need a parts substitution catalog (online or at local parts dealers). With a schematic (service manual) a local TV person might suggest (or perform) measurements after examining the HV module if you don't want to invest the time in learning troubleshooting measurements. (It's important for safety with HV to ensure replacement parts don't cause excessive voltages.) -- John
