Why won't anyone answer my question??

Thread Starter
I have posted this question twice over the weekend but have not gotten any responses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When a receiver (ex: onkyo 705) states that it "upconverts" std definition cable signals to 720p does this mean that std def cable channels will now appear in full screen rather than with sidebars?

What does the upconversion actually do?

Thanks,

My Denon 888 will allow you to either output SD signals in normal (the original 4x3) or full (stretched) mode. Don't know about the 705

Don't know about your receiver but a DVD player that does up conversion simply doubles the available lines. It does not change side bars or anything else. When you double the lines you get a smoother picture. Remember, you are not adding information so it is not as good as a full HD picture but in many cases it looks close.

Brett,

It simply "fills in the blanks" using some pretty sophisticated math by looking at the surrounding pixels and guessing at what the original really looked like. It cannot create a true HD picture, obviously, as not enough information was in the SD source to begin with.

I think you may be confusing upconversion with deinterlacing (converting an interlaced picture to a progressive one).

A 705 will take an SD picture from my cable box and display it at the original size. If it was a 4x3 it will display at 4x3 although the resolution will state 480p or 720p depending on what I select for AVR output. All stretching to fill the screen can be done in the cable box or in the TV, the 705 will not modify picture shape.

Thanks,

Upconversion means different things on different AVRs, it's more a marketing term.

I would think an owner or two of the AVR in question would have to chime in here to give you any help.

On SD source like svideo / composite some AVR's just transcode, some AVR's will transcode and de-interlace, some will scale to HD resolutions. Many handle this conversion differently as far as maintaining proper spect ratio or not.

No up coversion to 720p will not affect the aspect ratio of what you are looking at. you would need a scaler for that, some DVD players have scalers built in or there are separate ones, some TV's also may have them.
For more info on aspect ratios and scaling check out the CIH chat forum under the Display devices section, even though it refers to projectors not Televisions the basic ideas are the same.

You kno wthis for a fact on the AVR in question?

I have seen quite a few AVR's whack the aspect when scaling. 4:3 SD.
