(March 2008 update info) -- The PS3 Firmware version 2.17 is now available for download (it was released on March 13th). More information on the changes with firmware ver. 2.10 and 2.17 can be found here. Ver. 2.17 is not considered a major firmware update and is mainly to fix a few stability issues.
(December 19, 2007 updated info) -- The PS3 Firmware version 2.10 has been released and this master thread is intended for discussion on all releases in the 2.1x series (until version 2.20 is released). More info on this update is available here. PS3 owners with their console connected to internet can use the 'System Update' feature under the 'Settings' menu to download and install the new firmware. The instructions are here. If you don't have your PS3 connected to the internet then you can download the firmware update onto your PC and install the update onto your PS3 using a USB flash memory drive. The instructions are here for downloading to a PC (but the download link on that page has not yet been updated for the new firmware, as of 12/18/07). Try this link instead. Version 2.10 was expected to bring Blu-ray Profile 1.1 features (e.g., Picture-in-Picture, etc.) to the PS3 and there was initially some concern because the Profile 1.1 upgrade was not mentioned in the release notes provided when using the PS3's system update function (see further info below). The Firmware 2.10 documentation does indicate support playback of VC-1 (Windows Media Video) video files (but does not support the associated Pro-Audio format), playback of DivX files (only DivX version 4, or later, with a file size of 2 GB or less), a dynamic range setting for Dolby Digital, support for Dolby Digital Plus and a number of other changes/additions.
It appears that DTS HD-MA decoding will have to wait for a future firmware update, so there is no need to keep posting questions or complaints about DTS HD-MA support not being included yet.
Even though the release notes don't mention Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 now being supported, Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, has posted the following on the official Playstation Blog:
Firmware Update v2.10 is now live. This new system update enhances media playback on the PLAYSTATION 3 in a number of ways that the PS3 community has indicated are important.
We are introducing a much-requested video playback format with this update: DivX and VC-1 (WMV) videos become playable in the Video section of the XMB. This update also brings the PS3's Blu-ray drive up to Profile 1.1. Picture in Picture and other enhancements become available on Profile 1.1 compatible Blu-ray discs.
A voice changer feature is added, enabling you to change the tone of your voice during voice or video chat.
Jan. 7, 2008 UPDATE - Sony has announced at CES 2008 that a future firmware update for the PS3 will upgrade it to BD Profile 2.0. The date for the future firmware update was not announced
