PS3 Version 2.10 Firmware - Master Thread

Thread Starter
(March 2008 update info) -- The PS3 Firmware version 2.17 is now available for download (it was released on March 13th). More information on the changes with firmware ver. 2.10 and 2.17 can be found here. Ver. 2.17 is not considered a major firmware update and is mainly to fix a few stability issues.

(December 19, 2007 updated info) -- The PS3 Firmware version 2.10 has been released and this master thread is intended for discussion on all releases in the 2.1x series (until version 2.20 is released). More info on this update is available here. PS3 owners with their console connected to internet can use the 'System Update' feature under the 'Settings' menu to download and install the new firmware. The instructions are here. If you don't have your PS3 connected to the internet then you can download the firmware update onto your PC and install the update onto your PS3 using a USB flash memory drive. The instructions are here for downloading to a PC (but the download link on that page has not yet been updated for the new firmware, as of 12/18/07). Try this link instead. Version 2.10 was expected to bring Blu-ray Profile 1.1 features (e.g., Picture-in-Picture, etc.) to the PS3 and there was initially some concern because the Profile 1.1 upgrade was not mentioned in the release notes provided when using the PS3's system update function (see further info below). The Firmware 2.10 documentation does indicate support playback of VC-1 (Windows Media Video) video files (but does not support the associated Pro-Audio format), playback of DivX files (only DivX version 4, or later, with a file size of 2 GB or less), a dynamic range setting for Dolby Digital, support for Dolby Digital Plus and a number of other changes/additions.

It appears that DTS HD-MA decoding will have to wait for a future firmware update, so there is no need to keep posting questions or complaints about DTS HD-MA support not being included yet.

Even though the release notes don't mention Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 now being supported, Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, has posted the following on the official Playstation Blog:

Firmware Update v2.10 is now live. This new system update enhances media playback on the PLAYSTATION 3 in a number of ways that the PS3 community has indicated are important.

We are introducing a much-requested video playback format with this update: DivX and VC-1 (WMV) videos become playable in the Video section of the XMB. This update also brings the PS3's Blu-ray drive up to Profile 1.1. Picture in Picture and other enhancements become available on Profile 1.1 compatible Blu-ray discs.

A voice changer feature is added, enabling you to change the tone of your voice during voice or video chat.

Jan. 7, 2008 UPDATE - Sony has announced at CES 2008 that a future firmware update for the PS3 will upgrade it to BD Profile 2.0. The date for the future firmware update was not announced

This thread is not for PS3 DTS-MA discussion or comments. OK everybody? (unless it magically does appear in Tuesday's release). Posts about DTS-MA could disappear...

Anything to enhance the audio or video functionallity of BD or Gaming is welcome. PIP will be a nice additon for BD.

Just tried to sign in to the Playstation Store and found that an update was required. Went to system update and it says 2.1 is available.

Looks like there is now a Dynamic Range Control setting for BD/DVD under BD/DVD settings.

I was pleasantly surprised to see my HD xvid files played off DVD-ROM. Unfortunately only the first 2gb will play - roughly an hour of hd at the bitrates I used to encode.

dont get me wrong im glad that we are getting these updates, but the 2gb file limit is lame.

Ok, it isn't just me that noticed this as being new. Glad to have the option now to turn it off

So what does the Type 3 option in Music do? Is it better than type 2 or type 1?

Does WMV support include ver 9? I can't seem to play some of my video (stream via UPnP).

New things not mentioned:

- Dolby Digital Dynamic Range control
- Stirring new music visualizer of the Earth
- SACD multichannel, 2 channel playback still available through optical. Surround information during multichannel music isn't downmixed. Surround channels are just dropped. I don't have a center channel to hear if center channel is mixed with the fronts. Seems like it is.

old bugs
- BTB still only shows when Video Format is HDMI Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr + Superwhite on
- When using HDMI audio receiver with 2.0, 5.1 and 7.1 176k support and you play a 2 channel CD you expect 2 channel 44/88/176k. Instead you get 5.1 176k with 3 channels (center, surrounds) muted. Workaround is to uncheck 5.1 176k.
- mp3s at 44.1k sampling rate are played at 48k. Workaround is to burn a CD.

I'm most impressed by the earth visualizer. Excited for them to detail in their manual exactly what type 3 bitmapping does.

I didn't see anything in the changelog that said that 1.1 was implemented. Perhaps it wasn't. I'd be shocked that they would implement profile 1.1 and NOT mention it in the changelog.

Profile 1.1 wasn't mentioned either. How do we know it was added or not?

yeah, i was basically thinking, "okay, so i guess it's 1.1 now. now what?".

we're just gonna have to wait a few more weeks and get the 1.1 discs coming out to see.
Perhaps you were expecting fireworks and/or an official Profile 1.1 seal

WOW love the earth visualizer. very very cool
post #20 of 295
I was expecting that when the screen came up saying what changes would be added to the PS3, they would say Blu-ray is now Profile 1.1.

They mentioned that pointless Voice Manipulator thingee, and they mentioned Divx playback, but they wouldn't mention Profile 1.1? Seems fishy to me.
So I have a Denon 3805 connected via optical. Does this mean I can play 2-channel SACD at full resolution?'' That would be incredible news for me!

This works pretty good as a DivX player. Blacks lack definition, but the PQ is slightly better than that of other players I've seen. Oh, well at least I can now watch the Director's Cut of Until the End of the World on my PS3!
Not sure if the latest v2.10 can play SACD's via optical in 5.1 (if SACD is multi-channel). They enabled SACD playing via toslink/optical as PCM 2.0 and DTS 5.1 on 5.1 tracks but took it away in the 2.01 release.

Need confirmation before I decide to apply this firmware as I'm not really interested in the Profile 1.1 stuff.

Thanks!
Why is Divx playback limited to 2GB filesizes? The XBOX 360 allows 4GB.
The Earth Visualizer IS cool, BTW.
What is Divx? are those .avi files? Either way it's cool that they added support.

Hold on a minute. So we have no way of knowing if it is Profile 1.1 or not?
The only thing I noticed that may indicate Profile 1.1 support is the new BD Data Utility folder under Video, but it's empty.

That would be for managing persistent storage which does seem to be an indication of profile 1.1 support.

If anyone had trouble playing Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End check to see if 2.10 addresses the issues?

Thanks!

New visualizer for music!
