500 hrs seems a bit excessive to me. I've never heard that one.
Usually 100 or so hours is plenty. It's just so the spectrum of the bulb settles down. I think new bulbs tend to be heavy on the red.
I see you're in the Bay Area. I know that Chuck Williams is very highly regarded.
If he's the one that said 500 hours, then he most assuredly is correct and I'm wrong.

There's another guy, David Abrams of avical is also highly regarded.
I can't remember if he's in SoCal or the Bay Area. Check out the calibration forum, I'm sure he's in there.
Those 2 guys are as good as it gets, well worth the money
Michael Chen of LionAV has done 3 of my projectors and a crt. Most excellent.
Or you could buy a CALMAN Enthusiast setup and do it yourself!
