Movies BD-UP5000 will not play - Page 2

Another addition, reported in the owners thread:

Planet Earth HD-DVD, problem using the scene selection.

I realize that's more of a "problem with a disc" rather than a "disc that will not play", but still, obviously a firmware issue, which could of course rear its head for other hd-dvd discs.

Thanks in advance.

Actually, I created a thread entitled "discs the BD-UP5000 has problems with" to list these problems, but so far nobody has bothered posting in it...

On top of the Pixar shorts not working Ratatoullie is not working properly. It pops up a angle button on the screen and will come and go through the movie. It also stutters a lot throughout the movie.

System details:

Pioneer Elite 50 Plasma: Pro 1010HD
Pioneer Elite A/V Receiver: VSX-59TXI
Pioneer Elite DVD/CD Player: DV-59AVI
Def. Tech. Speakers: CLR2500BK, BP7004BK,
BP7006BK and BP2XBK &
M&K Subwoofer: V-125 (7.1)

Connections/Settings:

HDMI to Pro 1010HD: 1080i (haven't tried 720p yet)
Optical to VSX 59TXI:
Bitstream (Audiophile)
PCM Down Sampling (Off)
Dynamic Compression (Off)
Speaker Setup (Large/LFE: On)
VSX 59TXI set to: Hi bit

Got the angle message and I couldn't stop or pause. Eventually, I had to power down to stop. No stuttering, though. Otherwise, excellent picture & audio.

Planet Earth Disc 3 didn't play, but Disc 4 played just fine.

any others not playing?

I played both of these movies (not all the way through) and they played fine on mine. I have the following and will try them too....

Die Hard
Ratattoulie

Both played fine and the navigation seemed ok too. I did see the "Angle" message at the top of screen during Ratattoulie, but it went away.

Also, I have a Samsung display so maybe thats another reason mine works fine. Not sure.

I just confirmed in my player that Children of Men and Terminator (French release - director's cut disc) HD-DVDs started up fine.

So far, im really loving this player. I still need to test out the web features.

My homemade SW Ep 3 HD-DVD starts up and I can chapter through it fine. At the end of the disc though, it locks up....I think it doesnt know what to do. The XA2 would just restart the disc. I had to power down the player to get the disc out. Not a huge issue, but hopefully will be fixed.

Mine won't even load "Pan's Labyrnth" Hd-DVD. I'm beginning to rethink my position on this player.

Yes-believe it or not the exclusivity is partially smoke and mirrors,
I own these 2 "Fox" titles on HD-DVD
Avaliable on HD-DVD:
Mr and Mrs Smith
Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer

Not avaliable on HD-DVD (Yet):
Live Free or Die Hard

Play fine with no problems:
Oceans Thirteen (BR)
Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End (BR)
All of the DVD disks I've tried

Problems:
The Bourne Ultimatum (HD) - Many pauses and hiccups in playback

Even more of a reason to stay away from the HD-DVDs...
Bourne Ultimatum worked fine on mine.

I'll stick with HD DVD, thanks, and ask that you put that justification based on your anecdote in a cold dark place.

Pirates AWE played just fine for me.

Also, the Matrix Trilogy HDDVD's and The Fifth Element BD were fine.

Balls of Fury HD dvd doesn't work but it is probably HDDVDs fault not the player

I am having similar playback/navigation issues on my BD-UP5000. It's a week old. Below are noted issues so far:

(1) Played HD Flags Of Our Fathers fairly well - although it chokes during reverse scanning - its jumpy and when play is pressed to revert to normal play it often pauses and hangs for up to 30 seconds before play continues. Sometimes it just hangs as if it is pausing and I must stop play altogether. This reverse scanning issue was consistent on all disks I have tried so far.

(2) Pop up menu for Flags Of Our Fathers did not give me movable cursor on several occasions. Otherwise playback and picture quality was very good.

(3) HD Planet Earth allows pop-up menu but navigation does not work - I can go through the process of selecting a chapter in the navigation but it does not "take" when I select a chapter. The pop-up menu disappears as if it is going to move to the correct chapter but nothing happens.

(4) Pressing STOP on all disks I have tried so far causes the player to restart from the beginning of the disk when pressing PLAY afterwards. The resume feature one would normally expect does not work. I have to leave the disk paused in order to resume playback. The "resume play" button does not seem to work at all.

I will post more issues as I come across them. Please post any others you may be having.

The 3:10 To Yuma Blu-ray on my Samsung has not gotten past the spinning gears screen that says "LOADING".

I may have posted this in the wrong thread before. I put it in the thread about problem discs.

Have you had problems with other discs before?

"Ratatoulle", "Pixar Short Films", "Pan's Labyrinth", now "3:10 To Yuma", some Fox titles on some players...Too quirky for me.

Is that the HD-DVD or BluRay version of Pan's Labyrinth that wouldn't play for you?

BluRay version of Pan's Labyrinth played perfect for me.

Interesting side note:

The only available sound format is DTS-HD Master Audio. My receiver doesn't support Master Audio but instead played it as a normal DTS track.

That normal?

I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit this, but my "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" HD DVD version won't play at all. *blushes*

It is one of those "combo formats" disc (which I initially laughed at).

The DVD side plays perfect which looks great with the 5000's upconversion.

But the only reason to watch such a silly popcorn movie is for a stellar HD experience. The DVD side is a bit lacking in that department.

The 5k currently extracts the DTS core track from the DTS-HD/MA tracks and plays that.
