Sony 2000ES -What's ES about it?

Thread Starter
I currently own a BDPS1 and was wondering if there is any benefit to swapping it out for a 2000ES? Is the build quality the same at least? I thank you and my wallet thanks you

The build quality is most likely the same since they weigh the same and use the same chassis. The S1 was build to ES standards.

What you get with the S2000ES is TrueHD through HDMI via bitstream. That's about it.

Sony has muddied the water with a recent update to their site. It now appears that the 2000 will pass DTS HD MA via bitstream. They leave off the last 2 letters say DTS HD and of course the last to are the most important since it could be HR or MA. But when you read the specs posted below it reads like MA since it says indistinguishable form the original studio version.

Dolby® TrueHD, dts®-HD Bitstream out over HDMI™
The future of surround sound arrives with Blu-ray Disc technology. With the BDP-S500/BDP-2000ES, you can enjoy incredible new audio codecs from both Dolby Laboratories and Digital Theater Systems (dts). Simply by connecting your Blu-ray Disc player to the HDMI connection on your A/V Receiver, the BDP-S500/BDP-2000ES can either output or internally decode Dolby TrueHD & dts-HD. - Dolby TrueHD delivers lossless studio master quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment like Blu-ray Disc movies. An incredible sound stage, dynamic range and a stellar Home Theater experience await you with Dolby TrueHD. - dts-HD gives you sound quality that matches the crystal clear image of Blu-ray Disc media. With up to 7.1 channels of surround sound and audio that is indistinguishable form the original studio version, dts-HD promises you an extraordinary surround experience

Well - I feel better about this machine if it will truly pass DTS HD MA via bitstream. However - I'm waiting for the Denon 2500 transport (same exact MSRP)

The short answer is almost nothing. Check the earlier thread on 2000es.

Can someone who owns the S2000ES verify whether it passes DTS-HD MA with the new firmware?

Any pictures of inside the player anywhere?

It will not pass DTS HD MA, becuase hardware does not support it, period. It will only do DTS HD HR.

There was a time when the ES designation stood for something with Sony, higher quality, better build, better components. Unfortunatley, it appears that the only thing it is there for now is to soak some extra money out of consumers that didn't do their homework.

I used to love my 999 ES. Especially the picture memory...

Agreed. Some of the older ES kit was a more expensive but much better quality product. Some marketeers at Sony have obviously decided to hoar out the ES brand for short term gain.
