need adapter for coxial and optical

my hdtv has no coaxial but has 1 optical digital.

my receiver has 1 coaxial but no optical digital..

can i connect this to my television so that i can then connect my receiver via a coaxial cable? or would it be better to get an adapter that plugs in via coaxial and then i can plug tv and receiver via optical digital cable?

Maybe you understand your question. I don't.

A monoprice adapter will successfully accept coaxial output from your receiver and convert it to to optical to feed your TV. If that is what you are asking.

thanks for the response. what i meant was if buying a Coaxial to Optical Toslink adapter like this one would be better.

the adapter i mentioned on the first post is a Optical Toslink to Coaxial Digital adapter.

You need to go with the adapter that has the optical in and coaxial out, since your tv has the optical, which you're outputing the sound from and in to to the adapter, and then out from the coaxial end to the AVS.

thank you. one more question

i have an hd satelite box with one optical, my hd tv also has one optical.
the hd satelite box is connected to the hd tv via hdmi cable.

do i connect the hd satelite box or hd tv to the receiver via the optical?

You can do either or, but i would guess to get the best sound you would have to run the box straight to the receiver. Since your receiver only has coaxial and your box has optical, you would need an adapter like this to run the the optical cable from your box to your receiver.

Nice catch!

But ... ouch ... two and a half times the price and twice the shipping cost.

How big of a hurry are you in!?

Yeah, I thought about that, but Monoprice can be slow to restock some stuff.

There's also this if he wanted to go nuts. At least it will connect it every which way.

that link tulpa posted (partsexpress) shows a power supply along with the converter. does the one at monoprice include a power supply? i did not know i would need a power supply for the converter.

i read reviews (monoprice) and it seems some folks who ordered it did not receive a power supply.

and cavu "He who hesitates is lost." is absolutely correct.

i should have ordered the converter yesterday but i was not sure if it was the correct one (im new to this).

how long do you guys think till monoprice will carry it again?

I wouldn't hold your breath if they just went out of stock. Could take a while (especially this close to Christmas.)

i have this setup and have the exact one from monoprice, it comes with the power adapter and works like a charm, simple and efficent, i have a hd-dvd player a da hd dvr box and a receiver with 1 coax and 1 optical input, both boxes use optical and no coaxial, so i converted mt hd-dvd optical to coax input with the adpter listed above, 5.1 surround woirks great with no loss what so ever, one of many great products i have gotten from monoprice....

i am not going to lie. i am extremely upset at myself that i did not order it yesterday. they ran out at the wrong time and its just my bad luck i guess.

Eh, it happens. I've bought stuff where the price dropped just outside of the price match period, or some other deals that got mucked up. In fact today I just bought some surround speakers that I suspect will have a better deal elsewhere or some other unpleasant happenstance will occur.
