Question about harman kardon avr 247

I own the hk avr 247 (7.1 channel reciever) and the hkts 15 (5.1 channel speaker system). I was considering adding two more surround speakers to take advantage of the 7.1 on my reciever. It says in the manual that dolby digital and dts digital only offer 5 discrete channels. Does this mean that if I add two more surround speakers that I will have to use logic 7 surround mode to take advantage of the 7 seperate channels and dolby and dts digital will not be used at all. It doesnt sound so appealing if I cant use those surround modes.

DD and DTS can go up to 6.1 and this receiver will receive it. You can apply Logic7 to it and make it 7.1. No other receiver can process DD 7.1 or DTS 7.1 either - because that does not exist. DTS-ES and DD-EX are 6.1. This receiver will be able to process that.

Logic 7 can only be applied to an analog or PCM signal with the 247.

So to take advantage of the dd and dts it would make sense to just add one surround back channel to make it a 6.1 system, rather than two to make it 7.1? What would happen to that seventh channel if I did add it? Would no sound come out of it or would it be on the same channel as the other sb channel?

General question re: AVR 247

Are there 2 versions of the H/K model AVR 247?

Harman Kardon - 595W 7.1-Ch. A/V Home Theater Receiver 595 watts total power: 85 watts x 7
Model: AVR-247 | SKU: 8258921

Vs.

Harman Kardon AVR 247 Home Theater Receiver with iPod Control and HDMI connectivity

50 Watts-per-channel Dolby 7.1 surround sound receiver: 350 watts total power

No. There is only one version. The first one is inflated numbers from Best Buy so that it is equivalent to other manufacturer's numbers. The lower numbers are conservative values from H/K. Rest assured that it has enough power to drive most speakers.

Wrong! On the 247, Logic7 cannot be applied to multi channel PCM. On the other hand, Logic7 can be applied to DD and DTS. If you want to be able to apply Logic7 on multi channel PCM, you have to go to 645 or 745.

Not correct..
The PCM capability within the AVR 247 (& 347) is only for 2-Channel (PCM or analog) streams and then it can matrix these into a 5.1 or a 7.1 output. A typical 2 channel PCM audio tracks could be from a CD.

M-Code, I won't compete with you on knowledge about H/K receivers However, in this case you are not completely correct. 247/347 supports 2.0 PCM through optical/coax/analog and HDMI and Logic7 can be applied to these. Logic7 can be applied to DD/DTS through coax/optical/HDMI also. However, these receivers also support 5.1 PCM through HDMI. I had a 247 and can confirm that. However, it cannot expand the sound field to 7.1 using Logic7 or Dolby PL IIx for PCM 5.1 content.

As per my post..
The Logic 7 within the 247 (& used by HK over the last several HK AVR generations) is for taking a 2-Channel stream which may be PCM or analog. The input digital ports for the PCM stream can be optical, coax or HDMI and for the analog it needs to be be the respective source L/R audio inputs. This runs on the Cirrus Logic DSP processors (4926, 49326, 49400), the more advanced full process Logic 7 as found as the HK AVRs such as 435, 635, 445, 645 & 745 which uses a very powerful TI DSP processor (DA 610, 710) can do 2-Channel (PCM or analog) to 5.1or 7.1. But also can overlay a DD or DTS 5.1 stream and output a revised soundfield 5.1 using its own logic/steering software. Also the AVRs with the TI DSP can post-process
a 5.1 stream to 7.1 as well.

Hope that clears up any questions..

Merry Xmas..

i'm not sure but wanted to clarification. Does this AVR 247 upconvert composite & component to HDMI output. I know it has up conversion/scaling, but i have seen receivers in the past that only upconverts to component output. I don't want to buy this thing to find out for sure. From other posts, i can't find a mention detailing in exact words if this is possible. If any one can confirm that it does or does not have the ability to upconvert inputs to HDMI that would be more than appreciated. Thanks
