hi guys ... i have been fooling around with my pioneer elite 81 all day and i still cant figure out which the best audio is...should i leave it as bitstream or pcm? also im not sure about the hd dvd settins either.if you could help me out i would be really thankful.

Does that receiver support bitstream and contain the proper decoders? If so, go for it. Don't expect bitstream to be better than MPCM over HDMI though.

One nice thing about bitstream is that (if your AVR supports it,) you will likely have indicators for the audio stream such as TrueHD, which will give you warm fuzzies that everything is working right

So MPCM sounds better then Bitstream

so would i use an optical cable if i do bitstream?

For Blu-ray and HD-DVD, you need HDMI to get the best results.

Your receiver doesn't have decoders for TrueHD, DD+, etc. so you should configure your HDMI out on your HD-DVD player for auto mode and your Blu-ray player for PCM output or auto mode (if it has one). Don't configure them for bitstream unless you don't care about TrueHD, DD+, and DTS HD.

I don't think we have a clear picture of what you have and what issues your encountering?

I didn't see any info in your OP that woudl help us answer anything for you here.
