The best shootout scene: 'Heat' or 'The Kingdom'? - Page 3

If we're bringing other films into the discussion, then IMO Heat clearly needs to take a backseat to the climactic shootout in The Wild Bunch (mentioned already in the thread).

For shootout scenes, I don't think that has ever been bested. The build up as the bunch walk to the hacienda, the pregnant pause after the first shot (there's more tension in those 10 seconds than in the entire Kingdom shootout BTW), and then all hell breaking loose - perfect. Still packs a punch today. I can only imagine what it did to audiences in 1969.

Sorry to digress

Children of Men. And the most important people didn't even have guns.

I'll second that. The Way of the Gun has the most realistic gun handling and shooting that I've seen in a big shoot-out scene.

Collateral had some very realistic gun handling but the shoot-outs were short.

BTW, somebody should do a remake of the Miami armoured truck robbery spree. The shoot-out with the FBI that ended that spree was as wild as any movie script and the original movie didn't do it credit.

So I'd never actually seen that BofA thing before, so I went to look for some video. In the process I saw this really funny one. Someone was filming it on a video camera from across the street.

The robbers come running out and get in their car. As soon as they get into their car, four cop cars come screaming up. Given how they stop around the car that the robbers are in (which is right in front of the bank), you assume that they are blocking these guys in and they are going to slip out behind their cars and pull their guns and stop them. But, they don't realize that the guys in the car are the robbers, so all of them run into the bank. After a couple seconds the robbers figure out what happened, and they just casually drive off. Then the police come back out and are kind of looking around. They have no idea that they just ran right past the robbers.

That's a car commercial.

Oops. Oh well, never let a little reality ruin a good video.

HEAT is the standard

Good stuff in Collateral (also Mann)

Kingdom rates, but nowhere near M Mann flicks.

I have to admit, heat is a bit better intense though

but.....Hard Boiled anyone? That movie is a action filmmakers guide to action.

HArd boiled? Lol. I mean, yeah it's classic, and great action style, but I wouldn't compare it to something like a Mann film like Heat at all. It's fun and cartoonish, not tense and realistic at all.

When I was doing basic training the SM played the cut of Val Kilmer changing mags and told us we had to be as good.
Having taken part in more than one fire fight I would have to hand the medal to HEAT.

Val Kilmer says in the Heat doc, that the USMC used the scene as a training demo.

But I guess the fail to mention that Val has the mags taped to his body for speedy mag change.

Can't remember if i have seen kingdom but will watch it in case i haven't.

When ever i am testing out a sound system for movie setup Heat is my movie of choice with the bank shoot out.

not sure if this makes it the best in realism but once had the cops at my door asking if i owned a firearm after some complaints.

Well it does make a tried and "true" anecdote for sure.

Kingdom sounds very wimpy, even to a dated Heat.

Heat is still my favorite movie of all time. The shootout was what originally caught my attention when I was younger and only interested in the action, but the movie has aged very well. Deniro and Pacino got lots of notice, mostly for the much rumored idea that they were never to be on camera at the same time, but the acting was outstanding. Mann was brilliant as always, and the action was intense but not hollywood or cartoonish. I bought the VHS, bought the DVD, and then the Blueray as soon as it was released. Now this thread has made me want to watch it again this weekend.
