RP Suggestion-Been out of the game

Thread Starter
I used to live on this forum doing research for a plasma I got 2 years ago. I ended up getting a Panasonic which I'm happy with but was thinking of moving it to my bedroom. I really don't need a flat panel for my home theater room so I thought I could save some money by getting a RP. I've been out of the game for awhile so don't know what's happened in the last 2 years. I have a very dark room so I want good black levels (Does RP do this better then Plasma now?). It also has to be all black...I regret getting my Plasma in silver as it reflects light. When I looked at DLP's 2 years ago I definitely saw the rainbow effect so I hope that has been fixed. Can someone suggest a 50'-60' RP (1080P) in the $1500 range that will give me the most bang for my buck. I also am a fan of Costco so any good RP there would be a plus. Thanks for any help.

The best 60" RPTV can you get now is the Sony KDS-60A3000, but they are hard to get because they were just discontinued. It doesn't meet your "all black" requirement though, but that is more than made up for the picture quality. It is stunning.

It's also not a DLP (LCOS instead), so there are no rainbows.

Edit: Correction - not hard to get now. Might become hard to get.

KDS-A3000 is not hard to get at the moment. Many stores stock them and are continuing to stock them - afterall, Sony's recent press releases have stated that the factories are still churning out these units...they haven't halted production just quite yet. I'd agree with Valnar although if you aren't sensitive to the rainbow effect (or the abnormally looking BRIGHT whites) I'd go with DLP since they're cheaper for the same screen size.

A tv like the KDS-A3000 will have better black levels (and IMO a better picture) than a Panasonic plasma. Not sure how DLP sets would fare here, but I imagine the black levels will be pretty close. On a side note, the panasonics have gotten much cheaper nowadays... The only thing you need to care about with an RPTV is viewing angle and SSE (and rainbows with DLP). Check your sensitivity to the SSE and rainbows, and evaluate where you will be sitting in relation to the RPTV..
