It's likely dependant on your monitor. They never really represent much. They're just fun to play around with. I shoot RAW and just crop and size.

really nice pics Rob, but I thought you sold the 4900? I can't keep up!

Is the ND filter on/off?

Also, you could add a black bar in photoshop and adjust the 4900's black against it. Simulated but great for approximation. It would look like this:

They look, on my monitor, like the images I'm seeing while photographing. Usually they are a bit coolor though (the photographs). Blacks are hard to capture because of the influence of the monitor (usually LCD now). Tonight, I'm going to try some dark scene shots and use your black bar suggestion.

Those alien 2 shots look grainy.
HDHolic, your picture from The Host actually looks pretty close to how my 4900 looks in person.
Are the blacks lighter or slightly darker? I'm gonna bring this over to the 4900 thread for more input and benefit of others.

That's actually how it looks in person due to the cinematography of the movie itself, and considering it's standard DVD...not to mention the movie is twentynine years old as well...

Those 4900 shots are very nice by the way.

bguzman,
Please can you provide a little tutorial as to how you take your pics. I have a nice Canon IXUS 900 camera but my PJ pics turn out like crap. Your pics (especially that POTC are absolutely amazing!)
I don't really know that much about cameras but I will give this a try. If your camera has a manual mode use it. Otherwise use a "night" type mode. Make sure the flash if off. The most important part of the whole thing is using a tripod. You will never get it focused if you don't. Use the timer feature if you can. Even the slightest movement, you touching the camera, will throw off the focus.

That's it. I spent a few hours adjusting the settings until I found some that accurately represent what I was seeing on the screen.

Good luck and feel safe in the knowledge that if I can do it anyone can. Just be prepared for the look your family will give you when after the movie you start taking picture of your screen .
