ACK time to remeasure...
Didn't even think about that!

Use the Calculator Pro at projectorcentral.com. The link is to my PJ. Put in your throw distance and select "Diagonal Range" on the left. Adjust that to see whether you can achieve the height that you need (in my case 45", which means 80" wide for 16:9 and 106" wide for 2.35).

@bayn for example w/my pj and mount location of 14' 6" I have just a little slack in the range, but in a commercial screen I can't go smaller than 45" tall.

LaserFan:
Aspect Ratio 2.35 to 1
Viewing Surface Dimensions 95.7 inches wide by 40.8 inches high
Outside Frame Dimensions 102.4 inches wide by 47.4 inches high

This is for a 104" 2.35 screen. I have flexibility where I put my proj. so am I safe with this height and to minimize the top and bottom bleed over when watching 2.35 with zooming.

Laser,
My projector arrives tomorrow, I'm so anxious I'm sleeping with an HDMI cable in my hand, and I figure as I read over these emails and play with the picture this will all make much more sense.
I'll tape a screen outline on the wall and start throwing movies in there to ensure I understand these points you guys are discussing before ordering a screen.

OT: Does anyone have a TV in the same room as a projector? I'm trying to make this work but it just doesnt seem like a way to do this without a pull down (I'm trying to go with a permanent screen.) I think I'll try to find the right forum for this question...

I have a 21" TV in the same room. At first the TV was on top a low AV rack and I though of projecting on a fixed screen above the TV. The screen was too high and watching movie was tiring. I moved the TV on one side of the room. I have a L shape arrangement for the sofa and it works nicely. This is a picture of my room to give an idea of the effect.

Brilliant, that's exactly what you want to do! :thumbs up:

I do! A 60" HDTV that my wife insisted we keep!

So I am challenged to either deploy a motorized screen in-front of this TV, or figure-out a way to retract a fixed screen, say, up against the ceiling, when we want to watch "TV".

As I think I've said already, I'm playing with a 10' gatorfoam board while I noodle what the heck to do...

Thanks guys!
Definately keep me up to date with the room situation, my TV is on my long wall and as you can see all my equipment is on the rack. ( I need a standing rack to put in a corner maybe) and I've run out of space to place a screen in this room (The space on the rack is for the center thats coming, those in front are my rears that got here early ) I also want/need to share the equip between both the TV and Projector so it makes placement/runs important also.

Alain, very nice room!
Once the project gets here today (damn fedex!) I'll walk around with it shining like a head lamp everywhere to see if something sticks out or not. These are great problems to be dealing with

put this note in a new thread by accident...

if i wasn't go with the lens route with a 2.35 screen would I be better off going with a 16:9 screen and minimally stretching the picture with my 16:9 and perhaps losing less resolution/sharpness or go with a 2.35 screen with no lens and zoom more and lose more res/sharpness. I know MITS has the shutter option to cover up the black bars - not sure if that comes into play

i'm not willing to pay for a lens and moving bar for the lens for a while
does the calc on projector central only do 4:3 and 16:9 figures - how do i do 2.35 calculations
any opinions.

Personally I would go with the 2.35:1 and a CIH setup and zooming if need be, many here do zooming and are perfectly happy with it.
As for the calc on projector central you would use the figures for 16:9 even when figuring for 2.35:1
