PS3 Bluray Audio Output Problem: Getting 2.1 Only

Hello.... Just hooked up a PS3 to a Marantz SR7002 with HDMI v.1.3 cables from monoprice.... We ran the Audyssey Auto Calibration on the SR7002.... We have the 2 front speakers set to small and the center set to small... The surrounds are enabled but not connected so that I can use Multi-Channel Movie/Music modes which sounds great for music playback....

I'm trying to watch Blood Diamond on Bluray (encoded in Dolby Digital)....

The following is lit up on the front pannel of the SR7002:

Auto Surround, Digital, PCM, SPKR A,

and in a box in the lower right hand corner:

I'm only getting 2.1 playback in Auto mode.... I do get sound out of the Center Channel but only when switching to the other listening modes... I'm definitely a novice here but I should be getting 3.1 playback in Dolby Digital and can't figure out if it's a setting issue on the SR7002 or the PS3...



Any feedback is appreciated... Hope i provided enough information....

Try setting the PS3 to bitstream when using DD.

i'm having a similar problem with a Sony HTIB receiver, but over Optical. In the BD settings, I've got the optical output set to Linear PCM. On the receiver, it reads PCM 48 but doesn't give me 5.1. I know my receiver supports Dolby Digital, but I just must have gummed up a setting somewhere in the PS3. I'll try it later.

Over optical your getting proper operation. Only bitstream will send it 5.1, PCM is two channel only on optical.

I brought the bluray disc to work (Blood Diamond) and we ran it on the PS3 in our sound room.... My coworker was messing with the Audio Settings within the disc itself.... We changed the Audio Output to English 1 and it became multi-channel PCM.... It looks like it was being set to English 5 by default which is only PCM 2.1....

I will test this out when I get home and confirm... No idea why it would default to 2.1 PCM....

Well just as with SD-DVD, you have to choose the proper audio track for your needs and wants. I did not want to insult you by asking if you chose the correct audio track or not.

Don't worry about insulting me....

I'm running HDMI....

I want to learn as much as possible... My last set up consisted of a $200 Pioneer Receiver, a $100 Samsung DVD player, and a 27" CRT...

My new set up consists of a Marantz SR7002, Sony PS3, and a Sharp LC-46D82U... So it's quite a big technological upgrade...

WIth SD-DVD,s I remember just playing the DVD and selecting Dolby Digital on my Pioneer Receiver, and getting the 3.1 playback... I did not know that for blurays, you have to specify what kind of sound playback you want on the disc itself....

You never had an SD-DVD pick a wrong track by default?

Shoot that happens to me fairly often. Same thing, I get two channel or some odd crud and then have to change the audio track on the disc to get proper 5.1 operation.

I just got home from work and tried changing the Audio settings during bluray playback... Still no luck man... Not audio from the Center Channel in Auto Mode...

My coworkers did not immediately pick up on what's causing the problem... I went into the PS3 settings for BD, and changed the audio output to Bitstream... However the SR7002 continually displays PCM on the front panel while the bluray disc is playing... and the L & R are the only speakers displayed on the far right hand side.... I tried playing the Cars bluray... Went into audio options and made sure Dolby Digital 5.1 was selected... Nothing....

Here's how my speaker set up is configured on the SR7002... Perhaps this will shed some light on the issue:

THX Speakers: No
Subwoofer: Yes
Front: Yes
Center: Yes
Surround: Small
Surround B: 2 CH
Surround B Size : Small



When I tune into the CBS HD channel, I get 3.1 DD playback... So I'm thinking the issue is with the Playstation 3 output... Perhaps an issue with my HDMI cable connecting the PS3 to the SR7002? The firmware on my playstation is from 2 weeks ago....

I believe ou have to change it in more places than that.

I'm not a PS3 head enough to tell you what you need to do here.


Mine works well to my two AVR's (one in the theater and one in the living room) via optical or HDMI.

If you are passing the HDMI audio through the receiver to the TV, that may be limiting it to 2 channel. I have a PS3 and an Onkyo 605, when I set the Onkyo to pass the audio to the TV, I assume the PS3 recognizes the limitiation of two channel stereo from the TV and sets the output to two channel accordingly. When I disabled the audio passthrough, it was fine, and all channels played properly.

changed the audio output settings over Optical in the BD settings menu to bitstream, and voila! 5.1 audio is back.

Audio is not passing through to the TV.... Only the video..

Tomorrow (Saturday) I'm going to test out another PS3 that I brought home from work... I'm also going to throw in a regular DVD and see if I get the 3.1 DD playback on that.... If so, I know it's a bluray settings issue....

UPDATE... got it resolved!

I had to go into Settings > Sound Settings> HDMI > and select Automatic

That resolved the issue.... Phew.

this happened to me what I got my new receiver hooked up. I got the GF the phantom SACD for x mas and when I tried it in multi channel you could hardly hear the singing and the guy sounded like he was in the toilet. went to the HDMI sound set up, hit auto again and it listed all the outputs, there were a lot. after that the CD played great in multi channel. I think the PS3 has to detect what it can send to a source or something, prior to the receiver it was just hooked to the tv, hence the 2 channel.
