DENON 1908 Question

Does a Denon 1908CI downconvert HDMI through the component video output as well?

Meaning, if I come in to the receiver through an HDMI input, can I come out through the MAIN component video output?

A customer has an upconverting DVD player, but I think it only upconverts out of the HDMI output. THey do not have HDMI from Equipment location to the TV, just component video. I was wondering if I could run HDMI out of the DVD, into the receivers HDMI in, but out of the component video output. Not sure if the receiver can do D-A video conversion. THanks, Todd.

The reason that DVD player does not upconvert over component is that Hollywood blocked this. The technology was there and the lawyers won some sort of lawsuit. Since Component doesn't support copy protection they didn't want high def signals from DVD being sent over an analog connection that could be copied.

Because of this I am thinking that what you want to do will not work. If they wouldn't let DVD players upconvert over Component Video, I'm sure they wouldn't let HDMI signals be sent over the conponent video in receivers (without downressing to 480p).

AFAIK, there are NO receivers out there currently that downconvert/transcode HDMI to component video. The copyright police are all over this.

Having said this, Sherwood Newcastle makes the following statement on their website as regards their long-ago-announced-but-yet-to-be released R-872 (and presumably, the future R-972):

"Should the user wish to have his video operate primarily in the analog domain, the R-872 will even convert digital video arriving over HDMI to component video."

seems pretty stupid. this is just upconverting to high definition, not trying to steal an actual HD-DVD digital information. It makes no sense. So whats the difference if my DVD player upconverts a standard dvd, and sends it out component, or if I send that standard def dvd analog video into an upconverting receiver that then sends it out in HD over component? I don't see the difference.
