Warner to go Blu-ray Exclusive [Confirmed] - Page 9

Warner only went blu-ray because Michael Bay told them too !!!

Why would any manufacturer invest in designing and supporting HD-DVD players now?

What's important about this announcement is the impact it will have on the public's perception that Blu is the only viable format. This will start a landslide, just as happened when the first announcements came that studios were going to stop releasing prerecorded videos in BetaMax. From that point, the end came almost overnight as all the fence-sitters began to confidently buy VHS.

I expect to see no further announcements of new HD-DVD players, including dual-format players. There just aren't enough copies of HD-DVDs in circulation to make it profitable to make new players, and there won't be very many more.

Fantastic news for the future of HD media. That's what we all wanted right? As many movies as possible in the best quality possible. The mass market will now be presented with a clear path to move to HD media and the entire industry can finally work in a unified way to make that happen quickly.

I see absolutely no way back for HD DVD now. It's over for MS & Toshiba. The decline will be rapid. The remaining HD DVD studios will very quickly have to decide how they become part of this new revenue stream that will grow pretty rapidly on the back of the Warner decision.

It will be interesting to see how they do it. Staying loyal to a collapsing format is clearly not an option.

Hmmmmmmmmm that doesn't sound so exclusive to me.

I guess they're under contract until May, or they didn't want to pull a Paramount and kill announced titles. But BD will be timed exclusive until then and I wouldn't expect them to promote the HD DVDs much.

Are you believe to WB ?
Warner promised also TotalDVD...
now exclusive support to BD...
In reality WB want as Paramaunt $120M from To$hiba or $ony

[quote=HT Nut;12682313]I am neutral, but HD DVDs overall are much better in PQ and SQ than Blu Ray./QUOTE]

You're obviously not neutral. The majority of dual-format releases use the exact same video encode. Calling the HD-DVD PQ "much better" than the same thing on Blu-ray is like saying that PDF files are much more interesting when read off of DVD than CD.

Why is everyone expecting Universal and Paramount to go Blu-Ray? I don't see that happening anytime soon, and with those studios still backing HD-DVD there isn't any end in sight to the format war or whatever you want to call it.

What many of you have to remember is that "fed-up" early adopters are not what will make HDM succeed. J6P is who the studios want to lure.

hd-dvd isnt doing anything though... they just sit back and get beat.... i mean paramount and universal are exclusive... cool but where are the freaking movies?
With Warner saying that they'll continue to release on HDDVD until May, at least their not pulling and destroying titles, like the asshats at Paramount. As A BD only supporter this is great news, but at least HDDVD owners will still be able to purchase any new Warner releases that they had pre-ordered or were looking forward too before MAy.

Wow that is a blow. I have the 360 add on and no Blu-Ray and was already getting nervous because all I have seen during the college bowl season is a ton of Blu-ray commercials and ZERO Hd-DVD commericials.
Wow, I own HD DVD but planned on getting Blu Ray anyway, no biggie.

Nfinity is going to kill himself.

There is one difference vis a vis legacy media this time, compared to back when VHS whupped Beta: Computers.

I'm assuming that I will *always* (for practical purposes) be able to get a drive that will read all formats and that such a drive will even be standard in short order. When Beta bit the dust, one had to either keep the old machines in good repair or search for used players or buy (as long as they were available) Sony's last Beta model. At some point, you really did have replace or transfer everything to VHS.

I'd like to think that, by the time my A3 dies, computer drives that will include HD DVD backwards compatibility will be relatively inexpensive, and I'll be able to whip together a little HTPC setup that will extend the usable life of my HD DVDs at least until the next upgrade format comes along.

Does that seem unreasonably optimistic?

With WB exclusive, we'll be seeing week after week of 80:20 sales in favor of Blu-Ray until Universal and Paramount refuse to sit on the sidelines any longer.

The format war is essentially over.

Yep as a neutral owner this has little effect on me. I have a 360 add-on so very little money was spent on hardware and my discs will play for 20+ years. If anything this may prompt me to buy a stand alone HD-DVD player and leave it in the box in the case my 360 add-on ever dies.

It doesn't make much sense considering Warner has favored HD-DVD and still has not released some major titles on BLU-RAY.

To me the only bad effect this will have is to strengthen the ego of the already bloated BLU-RAY fanatics.

Exactly.

It's not like people here are so poor that if after a year there are no new HD-DVD's, somehow they NEED to sell their HD-DVD players and add-ons. Yet there are some people saying they will sell their HD-DVD player/add-on tonight.

I still don't see the harm in going format neutral. I've got both and this news doesn't effect me either way. It is news I am going to pass to my friend who is HD-DVD only (but will buy a PS3 in summer for Metal Gear Solid 4 and I guess to watch blu rays).

You are not alone. I would rather help HDM fail than support blu-ray. I know we are not alone.

Dolby True HD 7.1 would sound awesome if there were titles that had this. I think there is an awesome game selection so try again.

Oh BTW how are you 3 RROD?

How should they get any props for continuing to support a format they killed? I won't be purchasing any HD DVDs from this point and most likely very few BDs until they all support the features that HD DVD supported. I'll use alternative means until then (rental, cable).

I hate Sony too, and I also happen to own a lot of their products. ...I guess it's just not personal for me. If Sony breaks into my house and shoots my dog, then things might change.

Getting rid of competition is almost never a good thing.

There are plenty of competitors in the Blu-ray arena. I'm betting that Toshiba will enter that market before the end of this calendar year. The spigots will be opening now and more developmental dollars will be pouring into the Blu-ray format.
