Not necessarily. Especially if Universal and Paramount start rethinking things too. This just means that if HD DVD is dead then BD has one giant new opponent and that is DVD. It is time for a full scale assault on bringing in more new owners and moving past DVD.

I guess the HD DVD buy 3 and get 2 free this week was a little late or perhaps a firesale to liqudate assets.

Considering it's leaked info, I'm not surprised. Press releases are for official announcements.

Wow.

I expected this to happen eventually but not for a while. Guess they wanted to be able to talk about it at CES.

And I was so close to buying an XA2.

No need now!

Who wants to buy some gently used HD DVDs?

I can hear ebay filling up with red cases as we speak.

DVD owns all
I have to be honest. I've been a big backer of the HD-DVD format, but I've started buying WB titles almost exclusively on Blu-ray since last fall and if they had to pick one format to back, I'm glad they went with Blu-ray.

This hopefully means:

1) No more combos.
2) Increased lossless audio support.
3) IME support now that Profile 1.1 is out.

Time to add Blu Ray to my shopping list, hopefully a decent 1.1 or 2.0 standalone player for under $200 is in the works by xmas time.
Player prices are going to go back up. You won't beable to find a decent player for under $300. Bad news for the consumer. Also, no more BOGO sales for Blu.

and yes, blu has won.
Dammit. I just sold my PS3, even. However, I also just sold my 360 HD DVD drive, too.
Wow...the majority of the movies are Blu-Ray exclusive now...70% of the market. Ouch...

Thank goodness I have 10 to 1 ratio of Blu-Ray. I'll still keep my HD-DVd player though...still junk metal before and after LOL.

I predict that this thread will be 100 pages long by later tonight!

That's true. It's time to move dvd aside as yesterdays technology.

You know what, if this will stop the war and we can all embrace one format, then this is great! It is sad to see one format lose but in the end all of us will benefit from one hd format. I support this and and hope the end is near, and yes I have supported both hddvd and bd. This is a good move in my opinion.

I'm with you. while my collection highly favors Blu Ray, I just want something standardized.

i wonder what happens if microsoft does indeed release a built in hd-dvd player

AWESOME news. Congrats Blu-ray.

Funny most people would have said the opposite. If WB want the war to end in order to grow the overall HD market (and they now say that's what they want) the smart thing to do would be to back Blu-ray. Backing HD DVD exclusively would just make this more of a stalemate, the last thing we need.

I just hope that Universal (and others) see sense now if their contracts allow it.

What surprises me, somewhat, is that WB was originally HD DVD exclusive and for most of their neutral phase treated BD pretty poorly with the fairly lame excuses for not releasing certain titles.

A monopoly is not good any way you look at it. I wish the price war continued for another couple of years until discs were $10 each and players were sub $50.

Well get closer to this as soon as theres 1 format. Constant back and forth BOGO are great for those of us that pick up plenty of discs, but it's lead to nothing more than a stalemate.

A decisive switch to one format makes things easier on everyone. DVD has done fine without another format competing against it.

I apologize for not having a link. I just wanted to get the news out as fast as possible. The article did come from Bloomberg News. The news is pretty widespread now so I think you can find it pretty easily.

now that I think about...we can say goodbye to all those BOGO deals that we have been enjoying recently. hmmm...maybe that is a good thing?

Don't forget:
4) No standards for all hardware to include ethernet or the ability to decode advanced audio codecs
5) Likely no web-enabled features of substance for a long time to come, if ever, thanks to 2.0 being optional and a long way off

Yeah! Blu-ray is gonna be so awesome!!!1

I remember when AVS had the the One Format Only logo up top re DVD.

Now with the Warner announcement at

http://www.businesswire.com/portal/s...75&newsLang=en

we can now have one HDM format and enjoy HDM ... and buy AV goodies from AVS for HDM.

This is indeed a good day for HDM.
Warner said it would continue releasing in the HD DVD format until the end of May, although those releases would follow the standard DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Looks like I'm shopping for a 2.0 Blu player now.

If Blu Ray does end up winning, don't expect Sony not to screw its consumers like it has done over and over again. This is a sad day in HDM but I'm not calling it quits on HD DVD yet.

Glad I bought Blu Ray.

I had a moment of doubt when I bought a PS3 in Nov 06.
