Even though we've been anxiously watching Toshiba and Sony slug it out, my wife and I have not bought a high def player or a single high def disk. It's been a bit tough doing that, I must say, especially since we've recently purchased an RS1 to watch HDTV and, hopefully in the near future, high def disks.
So this announcement provides a bit of a relief to us, as it must to many others who are in the same boat. Although HD-DVD's fate is not yet sealed, as Hadden said to Arroway in Contact,
it is being handed its hat.
Good or bad, nowadays things happen fast in consumer electronics. News travels fast, as do its consequences. If retail sales of HD-DVD players and equipment now go down dramatically, Toshiba may very well have to call it quits on HD-DVD. The interesting thing is that because Toshiba is what it is in the consumer electronics world, if that happens, as the poster I've quoted above has already said, they'll probably start to produce BD playing equipment very soon thereafter. After all, what's the alternative - go out of business?
