Just bought an HD DVD (1 week) - What now?

Thread Starter
Last week I bought the A3 at Best Buy for $175 (12% discount).

I immediately bought the Planet Earth from Amazon (and watched tonight), 5 movies (Buy 3 get 2 free at BB - bought today), sent off the 5 free HD DVD receipt, and watched the 300 and Bourne Identity that came with it.

At this point is it worth hanging on to the HD DVD player - at the price I got it at - and continuing to buy HD DVD movies (fire sale)? Will the HD DVD movies go the way of the dinosaur, or might they still be playable on a combo player down the line if I continue to buy them?
Or would that be stupid because once my HD DVD player died, the movies would most likely be useless?

Or should I just return everything (Best Buy said they would take the DVD player as a return tonight when I called them - *not sure about the 2 movies that came with it that are opened?). I can still return the 5 other movies because they are unopened. Should I then take that $$$ and roll it into a (gulp) Blue Ray?

*In case you can't tell I am a complete newbie when it comes to all of this, and was caught off guard...

---------------
So, basically is it worth keeping the HD DVD player because I can get good use out of it, and the current HD DVD movies, and continue buying HD DVD movies that will still be viable 1-5 years from now?

Or should I return it because the movies will prove incompatible in the very near future, and use that $ towards getting a Blu Ray?
---------------

Thanks!

I say return and sell opened movies on Ebay.

keep it worth it, just cause WB went bluray. Its not like HD-DVD is dead. enjoy it now, Get transformers, Eastern Promises, Bourne movies, Stardust, King kong. HD-DVD is awesome.

people are overreacting, and people who say return it are probably bluray fanboys. you get alot of that on these boards. to show off the Picture quality get EAstern Promises. WOW

Return it, sell the movies on eBay. Yes, you'll take a loss on the movies but at least you're not out the player cost.

Just because Warner Brothers took a bribe and turned our their backs on us doesn't mean we won't see them back in the future...

Keep it.

Keep it, man. Keep it. HD DVD will still have a hell of a lot of exclusives to offer for a few years no matter what happens.

Keep the player. Best thing to do it buy a blu ray player also then you can enjoy everything. If one side fails. Keep those movies and player until all the movies are replaced with better versions. But as long as the losing player works keep it.
I still buy laserdiscs that's been over since 1999/2000 in the US.

Keep it.

I think very few have thought of this possibility.

Lets say Blu is way ahead now. There are still plenty of people who own HD. There will still be combo players. Once those become stable and cheap almost all players will probably be combo. Remember DVD ram rom + - etc. Every DVD player still plays CD's etc. Why not make the new hardware play everything.

If the hardware eventually plays everything it does not matter what your old discs are. Furthermore if the hardware plays everything, then the price of the software is more important, and HD has the edge in production costs. So why would Universal et al switch to Blu if the players will still play their stuff - especially if HD is cheaper and more profitable.

take it back while you still can.

Why would you need a combo player. I'm sure your HD-DVD player will still play HD-DVDs. If not, then you bought a pretty nice DVD player.

Now UNi will announce BSG S2, S3, Razor, and JP for release next month.
Start using the big guns UNi, and no more combos.

That would probably be the best thing that could happen from Warner switching sides.

Keep it or sell it? Well that all depends. It depends on whether you're a movie lover, a format lover, or OCD in that all your cases have to be the same colour. I say, if you love movies, and the red exclusives that are going to be released in '08 are ones that you would like, keep it. Its less than $200 to view a GOOD chunk of movies that are in the best possible version for the home theater segment right now. If that's important to you, keep the player. If not, get out sooner than later, because the value of the player will only decrease over time......

keep it. i have a ps3 and hd-a30. keeping both.

If I was you I might return it and wait until summer to buy into either format at this point.

But it depends on your income. If you are doing OK then just keep it.

I think Horton is a fox release.

Keep it. Don't forget Iron Man is coming out later this year on Paramount!

If you sent off for the 5 free movies, then you cut out the UPC. If you cut out the UPC, you cannot return it to Best Buy. End of thread.
I say enjoy your HD-DVDs while your player is still in working order. Think of all the future clearance sales. Goldmine.

Return it
Return it without any guilt. Like many others, I have been "neutral" in that I have both players and have had the ability to play both formats. There is no longer any compelling reason to be neutral. If you still want to go HD, sell it and buy a Blu-Ray player.
Return everything you can imo. You can always get the hd-dvd player again later if you decide you want to support the format.

Unless Universal (who is no longer under any contractual obligation) jumps at CES. Weinstein is allegedly doing so already. Remember Warner was 'allegedly' jumping a week ago and look where we are today.

Paramount and Universal aren't compelling reason to be neutral?

Remember Paramount is locked in for at least another 12 months.

Keep the new player. If this move is the death blow to HD DVD you will be able to pick up a ton of movies on sale to help recoup the players cost. Even if it does become a dead format, you can still have a large collection of watchable HD movies.

Ok...

I love Battlestar Gallactica... I really do. But it's in no way a 'big gun' for Universal... not a huge draw for the masses. Early adopting nerds, perhaps... but it's no Pirates.

Jurassic Park will probably never happen. It's a Spielberg film and he has a lot of control over his own movies. There are no Spielberg HD-DVD's so far because Spielberg likely has final say on anything he's involved in and Spielberg is personally a Blu-ray supporter.

When Paramount/DreakWorks went exclusive for HD-DVD they specifically stated that the deal would not include Spielberg films for this very reason.

Not necessarily. Nobody knows what the terms are and it's likely they involved marketing considerations rather than a cash payoff.

If it's marketing considerations and there is nothing to market, Paramount likely has a performance based escape hatch they can jump out of.

Universal, by the way, is no longer under any contractual obligations. They can (and likely will) jump ship any time.

Weinstein is likely jumping to Blu-ray at CES. It's just a rumor, but last week Warner dropping HD-DVD was a rumor as well, and yet here we are.
