Very strange. When I add Alien to my queue, the format defaults to DVD. When I switch it to BD, it goes into the "Saved" section of my queue with unknown availability.

Surely all of their copies of Alien on BD haven't been damaged in the mail or lost, but I can't think of any reason why they don't have it. I'm sure demand has spiked with Prometheus on the way. Alien is a great flick, IMHO, and the BD transfer is really good.

All I see is "Alien Quadrilogy: Disc 1", it doesn't look as if they even have the single disc "Alien" release in either format.

Out of curiosity I checked Blockbuster and while they show the image for the BD, when you select it and then check the queue, only the DVD version shows up.

I seem to recall some discussion about this phenomenon awhile back, could have been about something else though.

Have they ever had it on BD? I thought I checked into it when it was first released and Netflix didn't carry it on BD.

That's what I seem to recall, this was one of those titles they never bothered to stock in the Blu-ray format.

I remember that they didn't carry it on BD when it was only available as a part of the Alien Anthology 4-movie pack at retail, but I assumed that once the individual movies were released, they stocked it. I'm not sure about the last part; I ended up buying the Alien Anthology set.

And on that tangent, it seems like I have to get more and more stuff on BD from places other than Netflix. For example, Sherlock season 2, Falling Skies season 1, and The Killing season 1. What's sad is that if you do a disc search for these titles, Netflix's page shows a BD logo next to the "Choose Discs" button, but they are DVD only when you add it to your queue.

Netflix is slipping. Their service and disc turn-around time is fabulous, but I'd like for them to improve their selections available on BD.

I'm still having good luck on new release BD's .. I'm pretty sure though that catalog titles that are not in huge demand NF just stocks the DVD out of cheapness .. that and BD is still really not the mainstream format .. even at the B&M I visit sometimes, DVD stock is 10 to 1 over BD ..

Even for new releases, they're getting more selective as to what they'll carry on BD, and what they won't. For the 3 items I mentioned, The Killing season 1 was released on 3/13/2012, Sherlock season 2 will be released 5/22/2012, and Falling Skies season 1 will be released on 6/5/2012; all of them have the BD logo next to the "Choose Discs" button when you search for the title, but none of them are available from Netflix on BD.

When I added South Park season 15 to my queue, it went into my Saved section in BD format. It was released on 3/27/2012, but Netflix isn't carrying it on BD; I'll either have to get it from somewhere else, or switch to DVD format. (I know it is not the most important thing to have in BD quality; it is just another example.)

I wouldn't mind paying a little more to Netflix if they improved their BD selection. It is much more expensive to get them elsewhere.

You mean paying a little more on top of the little more we're already paying for Blu-ray discs?

Keep in mind that some titles now have a 56-day window for rentals, and Netflix is contractually prevented from posting an availability date during at least the first 28 days of that window.

In the case of "Alien" I'm pretty sure it's because it's an older catalog title they've become in the habit of not bothering with. They went with the Quadrilogy instead which has no Blu-ray release yet giving them the easy out of saying "Blu-ray availability date unknown ". The single Blu-ray release of "Alien" has been out for over a year.

Then what am I staring at on my shelf right now? Oh, it's not The Alien Quadrilogy, its the Alien Anthology. Blu-Ray, bought it last year.

Yes. I know we're already paying a premium over the DVD service to get BDs, but I'm willing to pay even more if it meant their BD selection significantly improved. Presently, I have to fill Netflix's gaps by buying from Amazon & other retailers. There are some movies & TV shows that are worth buying & rewatching, but the vast majority are worth renting, watching once, and moving along. Dropping a disc in the mailbox with a prepaid Netflix envelope is much more convenient than buying, selling, receiving payment, shipping, etc. Owning a disc of a movie you'll never watch again is pointless.

Netflix tends to not get movies that are only available in multi-movie bundles, or TV shows that are only available in multi-season bundles. Obviously there are some exceptions such as when the Star Wars movies were released on BD within the past year. But there are many items that follow this trend: LotR:EE, Farscape, Stargate Atlantis, Deadwood, Shrek 1 & 2, to name a few.

The Alien Anthology started out on BD only with the complete 4 movie bundle, and later the movies were released individually on BDs, but it looks like Netflix has never carried them on BD.

True, and as you point out in your post, all four movies have been released individually since the Anthology came out.

So Netflix has no excuse.

Short answer = Yes. Excellent picture and sound quality.

I just went ahead and purchased the six BD set(Alien Anthology) from Amazon Sunday night. It wasn't the $32 it used to be, but at $35 it was still a good price for all four movies on BD plus extras. I got the import version since it was 35% cheaper for some reason, but the discs and content are supposed to be identical to the US version.
It should be delivered today.

Yep, I bought mine from Amazon UK, when it first came out, and it was like $30 cheaper than the US version which was almost $90 at the time. So, your deal is awesome.

The US version was down to the low 50s. I am glad I waited. I knew there was some reason I didn't get it last year.

It isn't available for streaming. The page you were on for the title will show you if it's available for stream. Streaming is blue and Discs are red. IF a title has both the button to add it to the queue will be half red and half blue.

Red on the right will have "ADD" and blue on the left will have "Play". Move the cursor over "PLay" and it will give you the option to add to the instant queue.

I caught Alien on one of the HD cable channels earlier this month. Wouldn't be surprised if it is still available.

thanks guys for the helpful and responsive remarks. isn't is amazing that in this day and age, the studios and their lackeys at the rental companies can make a 30 year old title completely unavailable except by purchase.

and as noted the purchase price at amazon for both the individual and collectors set has gone up 10-20% in past weeks.

will keep watching my scheduling guide and hope for a cable appearance. otherwise my son will see prometheus before alien. at least i can show him aliens which i recorded to dvr months ago (e.g. anticipating just this exact issue, lol)

thanks again.

It's $9.99 right now, it was less expensive than that recently?

In fact, I just went to my cart and was given this message,

"Please note that the price of Alien [Blu-ray] has decreased from $14.96 to $9.99 since you placed it in your Shopping Cart. Items in your cart will always reflect the most recent price displayed on their product detail pages."

I assume we're talking about this release,

http://www.amazon.com/Alien-Blu-ray-...8074438&sr=1-6

BTW, it is available for viewing via Amazon streaming but the price is the same as the hard-copy Blu-ray.

Curious events with recent queue management.

A week ago I had the Secret world of Arriety in my queue with a 5/22 availability date. Didn't ship on Monday 5/21 and when I looked the available date had changed to 5/29.

Then today I made sure all the true blood season 5 discs were at top of queue for 5/29 availability. No problem there but did not see it in the New This Week page on the netflix site. Wonder if those will slip too?

They didn't ship The Secret world of Arrietty to me until the 23rd. But I also didn't add it to my queue until the 22nd. I received it on the 24th.

OK, with SWOA it was user error.

At the last minute I changed from BD to DVD for this disc (kids TV isn't HD, no BD player there, just DVD), and apparently the DVD is released a week later than BD for this title. Never heard of THAT before, but that's what's going on with this one. If I switch to BD it indicates Very Long Wait.

I'm moderately concerned that True Blood isn't showing on What's New This week... actually no TV titles are listed there at all. With rare exceptions I rely on that page to show me what's new and interesting each week... True blood was in my queue already but that's not usually the case. Sigh.

nope. when i checked like 2 months ago it was $9.99 but i passed hoping to get rental from nf. then after no nf availability amazon had raised the price to $14.99 and i said #&**@#! so now it's back tp $9.99, that may be the best resolution to this dilema.

thanks for the info.
