Since you posted this picture, it became clear that the 970's 480i HDMI output has a resolution/ringing bug. (Extensively explained and discussed by Dale in the 970 thread a month ago.)
Also, I recall from your original post that the signal from the 970 was fed into a VP50, and this scaler has the "random select HDMI 480i pixel issue" (sorry, lack of a better description ;-)
Could it be that your picture of the 970's ringing output is simply
an example of the 480i HDMI bug?
This would be quite easy to check by bringing up the pattern again, and creating the two different images by selecting inputs back and forth on the VP50. Or -maybe- by using 480p and PREPping on the VP50. Or by checking the pattern using the VP50pro which -according to Dale- does not have this issue.
BTW, could you help me reproduce your above picture, I have 970 HDMI 480i, VP30, AVIA & GetGray disks but I do not seem to be able to find a proper testpattern to see any ringing??
