Hello! This is Dan Busa with DISH Network Customer Service. I have looked into each of those channels we still carry them, and I show no channel issues reported. So this is definitely isolated to you it may be signal or just an issue with the guide, have you unplugged your receiver for ten seconds? If you have hit menu 6-1-1 select check switch then select test. It should perform 3-4 tests and finish. Once your on the previous screen cancel completely out of the menus and allow it to acquire signal and download the guide. Hope this helps!!

I called and switched to Dish America several days ago and nothing has changed yet. Maybe that's why?

What do you think DanB_Dish?

Mine was switched when I got home from work the day before yesterday, they went ahead and switched it for me. The person I talked to gave me the choice of switching or waiting until the 1st. The first person I talked to basically made it sound like I couldn't switch til the 1st and that my only choice now was to go ahead and confirm changing to America's top 250, which was not what I wanted. I voiced my dissatisfaction at that but it seemed to fall on deaf ears, so I told him to just leave it for now and I would call later. He DID say, though, that there would probably be more offers for us after the 1st, but I just wanted to go ahead and change to America's top 120, so I called back a day later during the day instead of the evening. I have to say, the second person I talked to was a doll, she was very easy to deal with and made the transition totally painless. I guess maybe it depends on who you talk to. The second person I talked to said that there are a bunch of different variations people have within the Absolute package and that they are treating it on an as-people-call basis, so I don't know what that means, but it was a pleasure dealing with her, I know that. I definitely give their customer service good points after the second call, although I was discouraged after my first attempt, which you can tell by my earlier post.

Thanks for the input Guitar Player. My call was very brief as CSR said we'll switch you to Dish America and I agreed. But since nothing has happened I wonder if the ball was dropped. I guess I better contact them.

A word of warning to anyone switching. Do everything in a chat and keep a record of all promises made. Since switching from Absolute last August I have run into a couple of billing problems and had a difficult time getting them corrected. Their billing department is pathetic to begin with and these arrangements are not standard in their systems.

The CSR I talked to sent me an email confirmation within a couple minutes of all the changes I had made to my account, so hopefully I won't have any issues, but I have never had any issues with billing before with Dish. To be fair, though, I've only been on the Absolute package with them and never had any changes to it, so my billing was pretty simple from the get-go.

Does anybody get a sense of why they discontinued Dish Absolute?

I think it was a combination of things. Main factor obviously was the low cost and as I understand it they were losing money on it. The inclusion of the Platinum package also had a big impact. When they first offered it, the Platinum wasn't a big draw, but since they've added so many movie channels it probably really increased the cost to provide the package. I know also there were problems with the content providers not having some channels included and that probably was a big factor in not just charging more or restructoring the package.

I must have had Dish America to begin with. Mainly I don't want any SD programming. I wish we could order channels ala carte. I really like National Geographic Channel. That's why I jumped on Absolute. They did a little preview of Nat Geo for a couple of weeks, then a little bit after they offered Absolute. I think Nat Geo does a nice job with everything they put their imprimatur on. I'd gladly pay $5 more per month for Nat Geo, but not $25. That's the cost with 250 channels of other stuff I don't want.

For me, it was National Geographic, Bio, and Animal Planet. My kids cried over losing AP (OK, actually, they just complained), but when I asked them "when was the last time you watched it?", they decided that maybe it wasn't so important after all. And they were all too happy to have Disney and ABC Family back, even if they aren't HD, as well as adding Nickelodeon and TVLand. But yeah, I was NOT going to give $25 a month more to keep 2 channels, and I let the CSRs that I talked to know that implicitly, not in a rude way, but just being straight with them. First guy didn't seem to care, the second one, a woman, was very nice and worked with me. So I know it's been said on here a couple times before, but if you don't get an answer you like when you call, or you don't feel like you are getting any consideration, sometimes it pays to call when a different shift is working, or at least it did for me. I couldn't be happier, and I will definitely brag on dish to people about the good customer service I got.

I have been reading everywhere that it is available on dish. I have Americas 250 +platinum HD package and I do not see it anywhere. From what it looks like, I guess is was available for some time then gotten rid of? Any help would be appreciated. Thx
post #1873 of 2570
It's definitely there. I have AT250 and watch it all the time. Perhaps you don't have the right Dish/LNB to see the correct satellite.

I tried this and still no AMC HD. I am pointed to 129. Any other ideas?

When I hit 130 on the remote i just get the non-HD channel. When I chose to see HD only, it skips over 130...

Try resetting the receiver and see if that helps. If not, you'll have to call in and make sure they have your programming set up correctly. I've got the AT200 and it's available on mine.

I think after my 12 months worth of credits is up on cancelling my dish account. The fact that some people are getting $15 a month credit and im getting $10 is reason enough just on principal.

That's just BAU for Dish, Direct, or any TV companies. They all play that game where you might be paying X for a certain package, and somebody who may have complained or threatened to leave gets it half off, or whatever.

That's definitely true to a degree. I have a friend who is on Direct, and they got his billing mixed up in a huge way, I forget what it was, but anyway, after him calling them like 3 months in a row, he told them to cancel him, that he was not interested in trying to get it straightened out anymore, he had been with them for 20 years and he felt like if that was all he was worth to them that he would just walk. He now has their highest package, with everything except the sports add ons and the movie channels, and he's paying $15 a month for the next year. I guess it happens more than we may realize. I was prepared to walk if I didn't get a satisfactory deal for losing Absolute. I wasn't necessarily looking for more channels for less money, just something I could live with without doubling my bill. I thought they treated me more than fair. If I'd been offered something like my friend, I'd probably feel guilty, LOL.

I did threatened to cancel and she was like okay I can close your account now if you want. Then im thinking whats my alternative, loose the $10 credit and free plat for year and go with Direct who charges way more money than dish. So I didn't. But i'm a paying customer just like the people getting $15 credit and iv'e never been late on a payment. So let them give me my $10 credit and free plat, then as soon as it's up I will cancel for real if they dont offer my another deal. If they offer my a 2 yr contract with some sort of discount I may stay, I will never pay full price atleast with the current packages. I would be fine with a $45 plan that offered better channels than the current dish america silver or whatever it is.

If it makes you feel any better, I just looked at my Mom's Comcast bill and their new rate increases and Charlie/Dish looks like Santa Claus in comparison. I got her a reduced rate for a year or there would be no way I'd leave her with it. But, she's 90 and any change would be a nightmare. She's still got the antenna I put up for them about 35 years ago and all the wiring was originally run from it, so it wouldn't take much to hook it up again. Only problem is a couple of CRTs and no converter boxes although I imagine you can pick them up pretty cheap right now.

It really depends on how much she's paying and how big those TVs are.

If it's $60 or more a month, at the end of a year, you'd have saved about enough money to replace those TVs with new HD ones. You can get previous generation 32" 720p sets for less than $400 now. I recently saw a deal on Amazon for a Toshiba 32" 1080p set for $350, so there are plenty of deals to get her into this century (and she'd be watching HD, too).

Or, you could use one month's savings to buy two converter boxes.

I got her a 32" Dynex from Best Buy for Xmas so she can watch her Rockies (about the only reason she has cable instead of just the antenna). Best deal around (I've had one in my bedroom for over a year) and it's got a nice picture, good menus, ample connections for $247 - hard to beat.

She's got a good deal right now, only $30 a month + the $10 I'm paying for her for HD (which was $8 when I signed her up for it at Xmas). Shamed ConCast into the rate. My parents are of the old school that just put up with their atrocious rates for 40 years and were always afraid to change (lot of seniors like that). They really should have some special rates for seniors that have been long time customers and don't have someone to go to bat for them.
