Although I'm happy with DirecTV, I'm thinking about switching from DirecTV to Dish because it is cheaper to become a new Dish customer than a continuing DirecTV customer. Has anyone regretted from switching from DirecTV to Dish? If so, what happened?

I've also seen posts about problems with Dish's DVRs, particularly the 612. Have the problems been cured? I know that there are also posts about DirecTV's DVRs, but mine have been fine.

Thanks for the help.

I went from direct tv standard def to dish network high def because dish was cheaper.
What a difference.
My direct tv screen was so laggy that switching channels was a chore and my 612 is way better and I've had it 2 years maybe 3. It has frozen a few rimes but other then that it has ran perfect for me.
Very noisy fan though, but if that noisy fan means it is getting adaquetly cooled then im ok with that.

I switched from DirecTV to Dish a while back and absolutely love having the 20 something basic HD channels DirecTV was missing (and still is). Cost is also lower and new MRV system will be great. No regrets, and wish I had switched sooner. Of course Dish doesn't have anywhere near the sports content DirecTV does, so it all depends on the content you want. If you do switch, wait a few weeks until the new Hopper system is available.

I just did an online chat with Dish. I have two TVs, and I want two DVRs - a 722 and a 612. I was told that you have to connect two TVs to the 722. I questioned this, and the Dish rep insisted that you can't connect just one TV to the 722. Is this correct?

They are wrong. They would probably rather lease you another 612 than a 722 since you are only using it for one TV.

I've had 4 TVs connected to my 722 for 1 year, no kidding....

To the OP, you'll save a lot of money if you consider waiting a little while for the Hopper. It blows anything else Dish has ever had completely out of the water. Even though it only has 3 tuners instead of the 4 you want, it has a very neat trick up it's sleeve. It can record an entire transponder (the 4 major networks simultaneously) on a single tuner and does so automatically during primetime every day. That lessens the need for a lot of extra tuners for most people.

I guess you missed my post on the previous page.

They have their reps trained to think DVR = tuner, instead of DVR = box with X number of tuners.

You have to stress to them that you have two HDTVs, and you want to be able to record and watch HD programming on both TVs. Only then will they begin to get it.

Once I did this I found out I would be saving minimally over DirecTV for less programming (although I would be getting E! and BBCA).

Cool beans.

I've complained for a while that the major networks load up certain evening such that you can't record everything with a single DVR. This pretty much takes care of that.

Wonder if it'll allow you to add an even larger hard drive and extend the automatic prime time recordings beyond 8 days.

FWIW - I have 2 HDTV's connected to a single 622. One via HDMI, the other via Component Video + TOSLINK, with the receiver set to "single" mode. Granted, you can't watch 2 different things on the 2 TVs, but that's not an issue for me. If you want to watch 2 different programs in HD on 2 different HDTVs, you need 2 DVRs (that is, unless you wait for the Hopper).

The EHD is married to the account, not the receiver. You can share the EHD among any 622/722 on the account...

mrdjman, you must be thinking of DirecTV. Dish doesn't work that way. No problems moving your drive around, with one exception, the 211k. It needs a dedicated drive.

Hmm...I thought sure it was Dish...oh well...so much the better. I wonder, though, if we will be able then to use the EHD with the newly announced receiver - that'd be peachy.... I have the 722 now (which I'm happy with...but wouldn't mind having the new toy).

Absolutely! Including moving any existing EHDs you might have over to the Hopper....

I found out the painful way that ViP622 EHD files may NOT be recognized by a ViP722.

Recently, my 622 died - Dish sent me a new 722 as a replacement. I was saving my 622 'goodie' files on a 500 Gb WD 'My DVR Expander", which supposedly was tailor-made for Dish recordings. Later, I tried to access a file and the 722 claimed 'no external disk found'.

Despite a Dish blurb printed in '07 states that EHD files are compatible between 622 and 722, Dish tech folks acknowledged that was not exactly the case - that they were working on a s/w fix which will be available sometime. Since they said these DVRs were compatible in terms of EHDs - how long does a s/w fix take? It's been about 5 years since they stated they were Okey-dokey with EHDs! I'm not too happy since it looks like I've lost about 80 'goodies' including some PPVs.

Dish offered to send me a 622 to see if I could recover my EHD files, but they wanted the 722 back and charge me 'only' $200 for the use of the 622. I escalated this BS up but, the management wouldn't budge on their 'offer'.

Another uninformed tech support person. I swap mine between 622 and 722 weekly no issues in 2-3 years. My guess is bad port or something on the 722.

There are compatibility issues with other receivers but not the 622/722

Sometimes there are glitches, so you might need to reboot the receiver or disconnect and reconnect the hard drive, but otherwise no problems that I am aware of... The only other difficult is if they disable the old receiver before adding the new one... Sometimes that has caused problems I think.

Did all that stuff...many times over. Even thought about throwing red chicken feathers over my left shoulder and turn counter clockwise 17 times...but no luck...still dead. Maybe bad HD...also have a 250 Gb WD "My Book" on line and it seems to be working - even able to recover the files that the 622 wrote long ago. Possible formatting problem with the full WD "My DVR Expander"500G HD.

Hmm...I had one 722k take awhile to recognize an initially 622 formatted EHD. It took a few days.

However, the 722k that replaced my failed 622k worked without any issues.

HBO and Cinemax went up $1 each for me, anyone else? I bet if I asked them about the price freeze, they would say something about this doesn't include HBO etc.

It always did..... The freeze was on packages, except Everything for obvious reasons, not Premiums, Sports, or Internationals.

lost some programs yesterday. the pulled my free 6 months of starz and wanted me to renew for $5 or $10 bucks a month. nope, not enough good movies to justify the expense. they always seem to run like 4-5 movies for 3 months and then switch to another 4-5 movies for 3 months.

also took away womens entertainment channel for some unknown reason.
pretty obscure channel but my wife watched it and was complaining about its disappearance. probably lost some other channels not yet aware of too.

dish used to be the most affordable provider, not so sure anymore. i'm close to being out of contract and will contact direct to see what they can do.

tell charlie making his product more expensive will not help him catch up with direct.

WE(womens entertainment) is no longer available unless you subscribe to the Top 200 Package. It was listed as a free preview during the month of February with a few other channels.

wow is anyone able to rent movies from bb?

dish's bb streaming really sucks. they won't let you choose movies to stream online only using the remote by manually going through thousands of movies one at a time. could take an hour or more to find one you want to watch given the pathetic system they set up.

called to complain and their response is well we just bought bb and need time to develop online content. seems kind of lame given that it can't be that hard or time consuming to set up an online site with all the bb movies available for streaming/download.

looks like we'll have to go back in time and go to the closest bb b & m and pick up the movies there.

i've given up and just use redbox. amazing bb with dish is now inferior to redbox. it looks like dish doesn't have the resources to make their bb pass work for subscribers.

Can't even do that according to what support told me. Since their information says you can "exchange" your movies at the local BB I assumed that meant I could get one by mail, go to the local BB, return the mailed DVB/BD and get a new title.......................WRONG. It seems Dish doesn't understand English any better than their foreign support people do. Exchange to them means drop off the title that was mailed to you and wait for your next title to be mailed. Not sure how you can call that exchange but they do. No store pick up of movies. At least that is what support has told me.
