Dish Network HDTV - Page 82

Tivo is like $15 a month plus the $150 for the equipment. That's less than 2 months of Dish. Wouldn't say it's expensive. Plus it's all in one and connected directly to your TV so my wife can work it. ;-)

I'm open to just about anything as long as it's cheap and easy. Been with Dish for like 10 years now and ain't paying them a dollar more. We used to actually watch a lot of the channels but everything has gone to crap now. You used to actually learn something watching The Learning Channel. Now TLC is nothing but trash. Even FoodTV has become nothing but reality/cake/cooking/competition crap.

Anyway, I appreciate the suggestions.

This reality crap is ruining TV IMO, who the hell wants to watch unhappy, pissed off people which for the most part is 90% of most reality shows.

Yeah, $15 isn't that much, but considering you can do the same thing for free, it's too much for me to justify. And the PC route is pretty seamless once you get it set up. Since I use a regular IR remote, my wife doesn't even know a PC is running the show. She thinks we still have a regular DVR. She even aims the remote at the box she thinks is the DVR.

I agree that most cable channels are completely worthless now due to all the reality crap. It's a shame every channel has devolved into showing the same junk as everyone else. Surely the public will eventually get tired of it and the tide will turn again.

I have to agree with you.

Just recently I was surfing the program guide and couldn't find anything worth watching.

At least with OTA, the programming (leaving out Jerry Springer and the like) you can generally find something. If not, at least you didn't pay for garbage.

epix are the only channels worth watching but they're not worth $10 a month.

there is no more (actual) bb service so that is a non-starter

iirc the bb package used to be part of their platinum subscription plan, but they changed it and carved out these
channels and bb rentals after they bought bb 12-18 months ago?

So you get a guide and ability to record OTA without any kind of subscription? That's cool. I'm all Mac though and it looks like that device needs something else to go along with it. I wish Apple TV would connect to OTA, sure it's in the works.

I've got good news and bad news. The good news is, yes, Microsoft provides the guide data and DVR software for free in Win 7 (it costs $10 in Win 8). The bad news is it doesn't work on Mac as far as I know. Maybe in Parallels, but I'm not sure.

Here's an example of what my guide looks like:

Been with Dish for so long I don't even remember. The monthly bill after the recent hike is $124.79, 4 TV's, 2 are HD, HBO, Starz, Americas top 200.

Encore Suspense & MoviePlex are part of AT250 & the $5 a la carte Encore movie pak

The 3 EPIX (+ EPIX Drive In) channels can be bought a la carte for $5

PixlL can be bought as part of the $5 Heartland pkg

Sundance AND HDNet Movies are now part of AT200

Starz Cinema is part of the Starz movie pak, of course

Also, you can try & get the BB pkg 1/2 price for 6 months; right after I had it FREE for 3 months, they gave me the 1/2 price/6 months deal...

Seriously thinking about getting Dish but I have a few questions, I would greatly appreciate if someone could assist me.

1) I have 4 hd tvs I want to hook up with the hopper however I heard you can only get 3 playing at once, is this true?
2) is there any lag between the Joey and the Hopper?
3) Can the Dish technician use my DirectTv mount?
4) Will Dish run a new cable line in my wall during install, I talked direct tv into doing it for one room but want it for another.
5) Does dish have something like direct tvs premiere pack or do I literally have to get their top pack and add encore and all sports pack. This can't be right though because I always hear how dish is cheaper than direct tv but my premiere is 130 a month and dish quoted me 100 for the first year with a similar channel lineup.

Thanks a bunch to anyone that has time to answer any of my questions.

1)  one hopper only has 3 tuners, so for 4 TVs you will want two hoppers and two joeys, that is my setup....all boxes can access recordings from either hopper and now you have 6 tuners available

2)  no

3)  doubtful, they will install new mount and dish

4)  depends on installer, assuming it is not difficult, but I wouldn't plan on it without an extra charge

5)  no familiar with directv packages

Thanks for the replies prime time. Can a Joey be put in a closet or mounted on a wall? I have one tv that's mounted and I have it rigged with the receiver in a closet and it only works half the time lol.

Yes, Joey's are very small form factor, so you could mount behind TV or in closet wherever.  Remote is RF (and IR) so it will work through the walls.

Y'all missed the 'hopper' boat. When AMC & Dish were having their school yard brawl last summer...THAT was the time to pounce. I got a Roku and I got the hopper for FREE and activation/install waived because I reamed them for killing the best network out there... Hell, they even sent me a stuffed 'Hopper & Joey' for my kid. I think they even took $10/mo off for at least 6 mo...

Just threaten to leave and have very valid reasons for doing so...they'll bend...
