Sorry it took so long to respond. I switched because, where I live, I am eligible for distant HD locals through D* so I was able to get Fox, ABC, and CBS via distant locals from New York. Prior to that I was unable to get Fox or ABC in HD in any shape, form or fashion. I also switched because I watch CNBC a lot and D* has CNBC-HD. I also like the fact that I now get National Geographic HD without having to pay extra and that I don't have to leave a phone line connected (with Dish, if you don't you get charged an extra 5.00)
Now that I've had about 10 days to evaluate it, I'll say that the picture has improved and I would now rate it as good as Dish. In the first day or two HGTV, Food, Discovery and ESPN seemed to be not nearly as good as Dish. However, now HGTV and Food look outstanding and Discovery and ESPN has improved. The Super Bowl on Fox was phenomenal (picture quality).
Also I like the D* DVR better as it takes less steps to perform the same function and handles conflict resolution much better. The Dish DVR is much faster moving through menus though. I like the Dish remote much better, more specifically the way the buttons are laid out.
Overall though I'm happy with the switch now.
