1920x1080 question

alright, I have my HTPC set at this right now, but I have a few stupid questions. First, between a show in 1080i, and 720p, should I change between screen resolutions(1920x1080 and 1280x720)? Or should I just keep it at one or the other? I'm using MCE 2k5 with the ATI TV Wonder 600 and a GeForce 8800gt.

It depends on what your video equip does natively. If it is native 720p... then 720p. If it is 1080i, then 1080i. It is either one or the other... not both.

you really want to use non interlaced if possible with an HTPC.

quality of resolution is the following for movies from best to worst

1080p
720p
1080i
480p
480i

There are entire sites devoted to why 720p is better than 1080i... but what matters most is what is possible on your display. You can't look at the compatible.. but what is native (natural). Go with that.

I have a 720p that can simulate 1080i, but 720p is much clearer. 9 times out of 10 you want the progressive image and not the interlaced.

alright, I'll go with the 720p then. thanks.

also, my HDTV says 720p and 1360x768. should I run at 1280x720 or 1360x768?

Run it at 1360x768 (if possible). the movies will automatically scale them. Most applications can do a better job scaling the image than TVs or Projectors. They can read ahead in the material and have alot more resources to work with.

You always want to try and match the output of your display. the less your diplay has to do the better.

If you have the option, try to use dvi or hdmi so the signal is reencoded (they have dvi to hdmi switchers which cost a few dollars on monoprice). If you go out via VGA or component cable, the signal will have to be converted to analog and then back to digital for your display. I didn't think their would be much of a difference but my back to back comparison between vga and dvi is night and day in the difference... especially in color accuracy and sharpness.

Depending on your card, you may need to use an application like powerstip to get 1360x768.
