Help >>> Issue Connecting 9800 Pro to Sony KDFE42A10

Hi All, I am very new to the home theater pc thing and looking for some help.

So, I've connected my Radeon 9800 Pro to a Sony 42 proj hdtv via a DVI-to-HDMI cable. In the desktop display setting, I've selected the 1280x720 resolution to match my tv spec. This get the picture to my tv, but it seems that the tv is missing about 1/2 to a inch of the desktop on all sides, meaning i almost couldn't see the toolbars at the bottom; no scroll bar on the right when surfing the web, etc. and also, the picture/resolution looks kinda crappy, i was hoping for HDTV like quality.

Could anyone let me know if i am missing something in this setup/connection or point me to the right direction? Thanks much in advance.

Sorry, you card is rather old, but what you are referring to is overscan. I suggest you get a current catalyst drives (7.12) and install those if you haven't already. They have an overscan/underscan adjustment tool. Could you also state how (vga/component) you are connecting the PC to the TV?

thanks for the reply Beefcake , i did installed catalyst 7.12 but had to removed it due to issues with this version. it seems that a lot of people are having problems with the 7.12 as reported on the ati forums.

i am connecting the 9800pro to the sony hdtv via an dvi-to-hdmi cable. i've read the sticky but couldn't find any specifics on my particular card and tv.

Ok, well does the version of catalyst that you are using have a section where you can specify the HDTV formats that your TV display likes (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p)? If not, I suggest trying the latest catalyst which works for you that has this. I found an immense increase in picture once I did this (back when I was using the 9800pro). I was using component cables, so perhaps that's a difference. I think the 7.7 drivers are good and have the features I spoke of as well as underscan/overscan stuff.

i believe i currnelty run 7.1. i will give the 7.7 a try. should i remove the 7.1 first before installing 7.7 or just go ahead and install 7.7 over 7.1?

just looked at the release notes for 7.7 and it said scaling support is only for the x1000 and hd2000 series only.

well, just resolved this issue the other night. downloaded ATI catalyst control center version 7.1. it seems to have support for hdtv which allows the correction of overscanning by editing the default 1280x720 resolution. i was able to get full view at 1216x684.
