Just curious. One of the things I didn't care for about DVDs were inconsistent cases. Remember the old Warner and New Line movies that came with cardboard cases? Or how about some of the special cases that were shaped in strange way (artistic cases) to represent something about the movie. Anyone remember the Basic Isntinct clear case with the ice-pick pen? Then there was also cases like Unbreakable, Fight Club, and Se7en that had cardboard boxes with foldouts containing the discs. These were artistic but I dont care for them.

The only strange cases so far (that I know of): Heroes S1, Battlestar galactica s1, Star Trek TOS S1 and Harry potter set. Lost S3 has an outer shell, but inside it has a regular-looking case that's a little thicker to hold extra discs.

Do you think as blu-ray (or should HD DVD make a turnaround), companies will start making these special cases again? I really like both the blu-ray and hd dvd standard cases, so I hope not... What do you guys think?

I think the blue cases are tacky and look cheap - it's like something for little children, like a pacifier or something. The red cases were darker and more opaque than the blue ones - they looked MUCH better. I know the format is BLU-ray...but now that the 'format war' is pretty much over, I hope they go to black cases! It's like with DVD cases you have the black amarays and those clear white ones. The white ones look so crappy and are only suited for budget bin unauthorized or public domain releases. But I'll take light blue, white, or whatever color cases over those odd shaped cases you've described any day.

After further thinking, I have decided that I hope they keep the blue cases, and companies stick to them! It would be especially bad if BD's come with red cases...it would confuse me and I'd probably stick a BD in an HD DVD player. I'll probably mix the bunch up in the rack if I decide to keep everything.

I disagree that blue cases "look tacky and cheap."
I think that the Blu-Ray cases with the embossed BD logos are quite elegant.
I don't have the same feelings about the blue WB cases with the printed BD logos.
Wasn't it also WB with the cheap, dreaded cardboard cases last generation?

I like standardized cases. Hated those Warner DVD cases. I was also ver disappointed when my "Discovery Atlas: Chine Revealed" disc came in a cardboard box that is taller than the others.

When will they learn that transparent plastic is significantly more brittle...

Never once had a problem with the original green Xbox cases. But three of my Xbox 360games cases (which are transparent green) have desintergrated along the spines.
And now the same fate awaits my HDM disc cases...

Since I order the vast majority of media online, its inevitable that I'm going to end up with some splintered cases.

Got my David Gilmour Blu-Ray yesterday. Funky cardboard/plastic folding case. Its already begun.

There is no excuse for the case used for Harry Potter and POTC-3. The paint from the Blu-ray logo easily peels off when removing the security sticker. The case used prior were extremely good. The quality of the cases used by Studios to reduce cost is making it go down the drain.

Yes on the WB/cardboard snapper cases. Image also used them. On the embossed BD cases, I will say that I do like those more than the ones with the printed logos also.

Even though I wanted HD DVD to win, I always liked those BD cases, since blue is my favorite color. And I agree that those BD cases with the embedded logos loook good.

And speaking of BD cases, I thought Fox had the worst cases. They used those darker colored cases with that black bar at the bottom, but the've since changed it though.

Jeez! Blu-Ray Blue is fine - works perfectly for me. So does HD DVD red ! Let the case colors stay unchanged and I'll be satisfied, there are more important issues at stake!

What in the world is going on in New Zealand? I've never had a case disintegrate, transparent or otherwise. Is it just me?

Absolutely! I like the extra artwork in the special cases, and they feel more “collectable” to me. A good example is The Lion King DVD box. It’s elegant, with a minimalist design and combination of matte and glossy printing that gives it a gilded feel. It’s thick and has presence.
