Blu Ray Resolution vs Game Resolution?

Can I set my PS3 to display games at 720p and movies at 1080p without having to go into the menus each time?

If you tv supports 1080p just go to display settings and select all resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080p, 1080i). The game will default to its supported res (720p usually or 1080p if supported) and BDs will play at 1080p.

I thought the games would be uprezed to 1080p like on my 360.

My other question concerns black crush. my 58" plasma is a 768p set. It accepts 1080p signals though. However, I have heard that 1080p from a PS3 can cause black crush.

Nope, the PS3 can't scale games unless a developer give the option. Even then if you have all the options checked it will default to whatever the game renders at. O and 1080p would have nothing to do with black crush.

You really shouldn't experience any brightness/contrast issues due to scaling.

However, as a fellow 768p display owner, I recommend forcing different resolutions in different situations to see what works best for your AV setup. With a 768p set, games on the PS3 will generally output at 720p. My TV's scaler doesn't do so hot with upscaling from 720p to 768p, so I get some image bleeding. For content that allows it, I force the PS3 to output higher than 768p (uncheck the lower resolutions), since my TV does a much better job at downscaling than upscaling.

Play around with it. It's a pain at first, but you'll be satisfied with the results. Generally speaking, though, you'll only notice minor differences (if you notice any at all).
