Did you own both formats prior to Jan. 3, 2008?

I'd like to know how many of you were "purple" prior to Warner's announcement.

I was hoping this poll would stay marked as "active" as long as people were contributing to it.

I think your poll is a good idea, but maybe not specific enough?

Here's my dilema: I own an A1 and a BD-10. I owned the A1 for about 6 months before I got my BD player. But I stopped buying HD DVDs last spring (I have around 20 of them) and have over 100 Blu-ray movies.

So, am I "purple" (I own both) or should I say I chose Blu before the announcement, since my purchases have said "Blu" for 8 months?

I only owned HD-DVD, but was planning on eventually getting a ps3 or standalone blu-ray player. now i am just going to get one before may of this year.

Thanks. Yeah, I started thinking about all sorts of conditions and started adding more options, but then I decided that simpler was better.

In your case, I'd personally say you decided on BD last spring. If I'd thought of it before, I would've reworded the answers a little to reflect "choice" more than what hardware you happened to own.

Bought my first Blu-Ray and HD DVD players on the same day in late November 2006.

I have had a PS3 since November 2006 and a Toshiba HD DVD player of some kind since April 2006.

I know that this is a statistically insignificant sample, but I like that a large percentage of respondents were already "purple". I read it as meaning that, although we may have our format preferences, most of us value content over format. I hope I'm not reading it wrong...

Lot's of purple people.
I only went with PS3 as I felt it was the superior format and would win the war. So far, it looks like I was right, but you never know. I just want it to be done so we can all purchase ONE format.

I've had hd dvd far longer than bluray, but I began shifting purchases over to bluray well before WB announced they would be reviewing their postiion on both formats after the holidays. I go with my gut. My gut told me, sony would never lay down and die even if every other studio was aligned against them and that WB and the other studios, no matter how reluctantly would capitulate and cave in to bluray if they wanted to make anything happen on hidef hd dvd. The ps3 install base would grow regardless and once it hits $299, there would be accelerated adoption of the console and nothing on toshiba's side would compete with that. The prejudice many share about the ps3 being a game console is unfounded, and to be quite blunt about it, silly.

Ideally, I would like a bluray player with hd dvd specs, but that's not going to happen.

I became 'purple' while HD DVD was gaining momentum...Plus I like to play games on line wit my brother

Became purple when the PS3 came out.

I voted (I'm purple, PS3 in June '07 and A35 in October '07) but I'm not sure what the point of this poll is.

I honestly didn't feel I had any real choice but to add BR capability! I am primarily a film fan, and between the BD sale prices and release of titles that mattered to me, it became a question of what player I would get and when, not if! In the interim, I started buying titles simply because the sales made them too attractive to ignore. It took a little time to come up with an appropriate solution for a player, but not that long !

Been purple for over a year.

What about those who owned neither format prior to Jan 3rd?
Yup. Definitely leaned blue, but still own both.

Bought the Toshiba A1 the first week it was available (Sept 2006 - kripes can't remember exactly); bought the Sony BPD-1 the first week it was available (Dec 2006).

Always felt BR would probably win, so only bought HDDVDs when the BR version wasn't available. Problem is I still now have almost 30 HDDVDs (which at $25 a pop is $750) so I expect to keep a player in my stack for the forseeable future. Just won't be buying any new HDDVDs.

HDA2 - Dec 06'

BD30 - Dec 07'

Especially heartbroken over my A2 since HD was first on the market...and you know what they say about 'first loves'... Strangely enough, even though BD had the advantage of an extra six months to prepare for their launch, their first (standalone) players did not seem to display any benefit of that advantage.

XA1 in November 2006 (Sold December 2007) and Panny BD10 in November 2007 Three XA2s in December 2007
126 HD DVD movies 59 Blu Ray movies
HD DVD for all but Blu exclusive.
Will now buy about another 180 HD DVD titles and whatever in Blu.

There'll be others, but never one like your first...

So you didn't get to play in the exciting days of Laserdisc??

Blu with a slight purple tint
I was red and I'm still red. I'll become purple sometime in 2008 though, when there's more than a game console that's considered reliable, but I won't magically turn blue. I want to enjoy movies, no matter the color of the boxes... Besides, I do like the format (HD DVD), and the fact that my player works flawlessly.

I dove in and took the plunge for both in December when the big Christmas sales caught my attention. I bought the Samsung1400 & Toshiba A3.

I was still within my 30 day window after the announcement, so the Toshiba was returned on January 6th. I started purple (if even for less than 1 month...LOL), but you can now color me BLUE.

BD was always my player of choice that I believed would ultimately win the war, but figured it would drag on long enough to make the HD-DVD a good convenience purchase for the present. As soon as the announcement was made on the 4th, I couldn't pack that HD-DVD player up fast enough.

The announcement of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz made me go purple in April since the HD-DVD only films that interested me before then were Warner like Batman and V for Vendetta. If it weren't for those two Wright/Pegg films I would have gone purple for Heroes and Battlestar Galactica.

I'll say I'm purple as a voter. I bought both players at the same time. A1 and the S301. I only bought the HD-DvD because there were movies I wanted that only came on the HD-DVD. Now I'm glad I did. I love both of them. And plan two keep on purchasing Both formats.
