Watched an old Paul Newman last night - The Life And Times Of Judge Roy Bean. Fun movie that I would pick up in a minute if it ever came out in blu-ray.

I was on a a sci-fi forum and a guy posted an off-topic link about Sony's new digital restoration of BYE BYE BIRDIE. I love that movie and it would be fantastic on BD.

I watched the VERY old DVD last week. When I first bought the DVD (over 10 years ago). It looked fine on my 27" 4x3 TV. When I watched it on my new 60 LED HDTV it does NOT look so fine!

Where is Lifeforce (1985) with the extremely talented Mathilda May? Film directed by Tobe Hooper (his follow-up film to Poltergeist), music by Henry Mancini and Michael Kamen. The DVD was released in 1998.

I suspect Midnight Legacy (of Alien 2 On Earth fame) might be the only studio to even look into this one...

THE BARBARIANS was a sword & sorcery flick made in 1987 with wrestlers "The Barbarian Brothers" and Eva Larue, the hot redhead from CSI Miami, in a supporting role. Previously available only on VHS and on LaserDisc (pan & scan only, not even letterboxed).

I sold off my LaserDisc to get out of debt several years ago, thinking I'd rebuy it on DVD later. Surprise, it was never released on DVD.

Maybe this might tie you over, if you are PAL compatible that is.

Any film made before 1965 not on BD already

you should probably vague that up a bit

I'm currently watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit on HBO Family. How come this ain't on Blu Ray????
Another suggestion... Samson and Delilah (1949). This movie ain't even on DVD right now, except as an "all-region import" (in other words, a crappy bootleg).

Kinda wishing I hadn't sold off my old LaserDisc several years back.

Yet another oldie from my letterboxed LaserDisc collection: The Day of the Triffids (1962).

According to the reviews on Amazon, every DVD version out there is pan & scan crap.

Can't somebody release a Blu Ray (or even a decent DVD) that's better than my old LaserDisc?

That's not entirely true. http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=5556

Generally all non-R1 DVDs are OAR but there is this Cheezy Flicks distributed R1 DVD (PD release? Bootleg?). Granted it is non-anamorphic, so a BD would be nice (as long as it is well done).

Thanks for the tip, didn't know the Cheesy Flicks version was letterboxed. However, the site does say the picture quality is "bad."

Cheesy Flicks is responsible for the "Navy vs. the Night Monsters" DVD -- my old VHS EP copy from late night local TV 25 years ago looks better than that p.o.s.

The picture on my Triffids LaserDisc is pretty good for an old LaserDisc, which I'm assuming is better than the current DVD releases.

I guess we will all have one or more LDs we will hang on to until the disc and/or player craps out on us since the chance they will appear on a proper DVD or even BD is slim to none. One would hope that some distributor that cares for some of these older, "obscure" titles would give them the TLC they require.

I'm kinda hoping the folks from Midnight Legacy (which did the fantastic BD of Alien 2 On Earth) are reading this thread.

Any chance the Finding Nemo Blu-ray will (finally) be announced along with the Lion King or Cars 2 blu-rays that come out in November?
Anyone know why The Core has been held up so long? It was a fun ride and blu ray treatment would be appreciated.

Is Lionsgate ever going to release the Sci-Fi Channel "Frank Herbert's Dune" miniseries on blu-ray??? I remember hearing rumblings about it way back in 2006 when the format launched.

The visual effects might still be stuck at standard-def resolution (even on regular 'ol dvd some of the shots look pixelated as anything), but that didn't stop Fox from putting out Firefly on blu-ray.

Oh, and a Storaro-approved transfer would be great for this, unlike Last Emperor. I don't know if imdb's technical specs are 100% accurate, but it lists the mini as having been shot in Storaro's prefered "Univision" format, which is basically 3-perf Super 35 left "open matte" at 2.00:1. The opening credits even said "Univision" in slightly smaller letters under his name IIRC. Of course, the effects shots would've needed to have been done at 2.00:1 and it's possible they were only done at the final broadcast ratio of 16:9, so who knows.

I don't know if Storaro went the full nine and actually shot it at 25 frames per second, but I never noticed anything seeming "slowed down" so I'm guessing he stuck with 24.

If it's still in the pipeline, Lionsgate is probably just waiting until the new big screen adaptation of the book happens (if it happens .... it was in development at Paramount until their option expired), just like how I'm sure Universal is waiting until the new Conan the Barbarian movie to put out the Dino/Arnold flicks.

I am extremely disappointed with Warner Bros.' plans for not releasing a Blu-ray complete series box set, only doing so with a DVD release.

To see what I have to say about it, visit my Smallville web page. It is easier to just have you read what i have to say there, as a link to the release info is also included.

We wait for the BD to watch this series, so I didn't even know it was ending - wonder if they're going to start a new Superman series...

As for the lack of a complete BD set, I imagine the price of a complete set of 10 series will be very formidable even on DVD; in this economy they might not be able to justify it. I wouldn't give up hope though, of seeing the early seasons trickle out on BD over the next few years at least; Warner's finally completing Supernatural that way, with Season 2 coming out soon. Though, it is surprising they still havn't ported Season 5 over to BD.

With the big-budget movie coming out....not likely! Probably will have to make do with the WONDER WOMAN series (if it gets picked up)

There is that. But, consider the lack of sales because of customers that will only buy BD (like me), who will not puchase a DVD only set.

I don't know. As indicated, it will be expensive to go back and redo the first four seasons. I'm not sure that they would get any ROI.

Released Sep 7, 2010

EDIT: Oh wait... you meant Smallville season 5. You added that text while discussing Supernatural, and that threw me. That is surprising, considering that they do have HD masters for that season.
Since the early seasons were all 1.78, I'm assuming they already have HD masters - it at least shows they were originally filmed in anticipation for the switch to HD - whether or not the effects were rendered in HD or not is a different story, but that didn't keep Firefly away from the format. Unless WB plans to scrap the series now that it's ending and void potential revenue in the future, eventually it'll have to at least be converted.

Unfortunately the post production was not done using HD gear, but using anamorphic widescreen NTSC gear (or whatever SD gear was used). All of the 35mm film (I believe it was shot on 35mm) can easily be transferred to HD. The problem is that all of the effects must be completely redone, a very expensive venture, with very little ROI.

I'd love to have the first four seasons redone in HD, but am I willing the pay Star Trek prices for the result? Probably not.

Me too. I wasn't sure what season they started HD broadcasting of it in but I noticed they just showed the first episode in HD a couple weeks ago, so perhaps it was HD from the start (although my local WB has begun compressing so much that it can be hard to tell at times SD wide from HD wide). I'm pretty sure at least one more season was shwon in HD though.

And peaking of this what about 24? For sure they have earlier seasons in HD and yet stupid DVD release only. I DO NOT pay for DVDs! And same for Veronica Mars, heck the couple episodes I recorded OTA for free look way better than the DVD they charge for! Enough with that nonsense already. All of VM was shown in HD so they definitely have it.

Heck WB still only has the DVD of most of their stuff that was entirely mastered in HD, such as Veronica Mars. Maddening they won't release VM on HD. They want people to actually pay for something worse than whatever you recorded OTA! (and then they complain about low sales for early smallville seasons for veronica mars, etc. and one thing to note when Amazon had the crazy like $5 a season hot box Christmas sale smallville Christmas sale people jumped all over the first few seasons and the latter seasons on DVD took a long time to sell out sine people prefer the blu!)
