HD70 vs. HC1500U

Well I always told myself that I would never start one of these threads (due to most things you can figure out by reading answers posted elsewhere), but here it goes. I visited one of the big box stores in town. They currently have an HD70, but it has not been clearance out yet. In talking with one the employees, it is a discontinued product there, and if I can believe they know what they are talking about, it should be clearance sometime soon. While I was browsing, I noticed a HC1500 that had an open box price of $60 less than I could find it anywhere else. From what I understand, the HC1500 is a better projector, but is it worth $250 more (if I can snag the HD70 at the clearance price)? Currently I'm using the IN72 with a 102" screen, and I sit around 13-14 feet away. The screen is a DIY made from the blackout cloth. My question is twofold, one, am I going to get a much better picture with either of those projectors than what I am currently using, and two, which is the better value? I really only use the machine for DVD's and gaming (currently an XBOX 360).

i have seen both and i own the in72 honestly i owned the hd70 for 3 weeks and i liked my in 72 better , my brother owns the hc1500 it is better than the in 72 but it takes more tweaking out of the box for it to match the color of the in72
but in hd it outshines it but not in sd. I found the hd70 even after tweaking not that much better in hd than the in72 and much worse in sd

I'm in about the same situation your in. I currently have the Optoma H31 and want to upgrade. I have been looking at the HD70 and the HC1500 and I think I'm going to go with the HC1500 based on all the reviews I've seen. One of the biggest reasons for me is the light output from the HC1500 (1600 lumens).

save up and really go big with the sp7210 or i'm also looking at the optoma 7100 i beleive in the next few months the prices of these will drop even more

And on the Optoma HD 65?

I was determined to buy the Mit HC1500, but the upscaling of signals 480i is very bad. E as I will also use with the Wii, which has this limitation, I found well by giving attention to the Optoma HD 65 which is a new system of colors and better upscaling of SD signals.

A hug,
Peter

Thanks for the input. I was hoping somebody would say that it wouldn't look a whole lot better. I've been happy with the IN72. I enjoy upgrading, but if I'm not going to get a whole lot of benefit, I can wait. I just hate to miss a good deal. Again thanks for the input.

I'm gonna crowbar my question in this thread.

Just ordered what I thought was HC1500 but is actually a HC1500U. Anybody know the difference, if one? Got it from a big box store so I wouldn't imagine it's grey market.

HD65:
Ecomode Yes
(Brightness: 1280 lumens; Lamp life: 3000 hours; Noise: 34 dB)
FCC Class A
Audible Noise 37.0 dB

It sounds noisy.

Thanks, That makes me feel better. First PJ and got a 92" to go with it. Hoping the whole PJ thing lives up to the hype. Was waivering between upgrading to larger plasma but the big screen wow factor won out.

Have had HC1500 on 92" screen for about a month now...watch mostly HD-DVD and OTA HD material. I am still amazed at the picture this thing throws. Watching Planet Earth on HD-DVD is simply unreal...could never go back to tiny 56" RPTV or plasma!

I saw both these in a big store today. I thought both looked really good and would probably be happy with either. I was surprised how well BOTH seemed to hold up to having some light in the showing room. We turned off the recessed lights buts the door to the showing room had windows and there were 3 other big lcd/plasma tvs on in the room. I thought the MIT was supposed to be better at that, maybe in other conditions it is. The HD70 looked a little better, for sure it had blacker blacks. The guys who showed it to me though barely knew how to work it and didn't know much about pjs so I'm guessing neither were tweaked.

So after today I'd consider the HD70 (I wasn't before) but probably would still get the MIT because it supposed to be brighter and better. My room will not be super dark so brighter is better for me. Again, they both looked great.

For all of you deciding between these two... i would have to say the MITS, only because the brightness factor. I own a Panny pt-ae700u and the quality is just as good and the MITS brightness and clarity is underly stupifyingly amazing. I payed 2000 for my Panny and have seen the Mits for under 750. I'm a scrutinizing video guy and couldn't see any reason i wouldn't buy the MITS, which is already on order as i write this. I had this in my house for testing before. I want to re-watch all my movies now I believe in nice bright images with deep blacks, and for XBOX360 it's a joy. Lumens is important. However if you've been burned before the HD70 has a 3 year where the Mits has 1.
Good Luck

I recently bought an HD 1000 on amazon then saw the HC 1500 for less, so I bought it, I guess I will return one, from what I am reading the 1500 is better

well, after much waffling and trying to decide between a few low priced projectors (Mit 1500, W500, HD70), I pulled the trigger on the HD70 this morning. A certain orange sponsor's deal of the day made it too good a deal to pass up this time.
