Blockbuster BD rental discussion thread - Page 128

Well, after about 2 years I decided to fire Blockbuster. I got down to just a few "available" titles and about 20 titles "not available." Local stores all closed up over a year and a half ago.
BB tried to keep me with some offer or other but I declined. I sent back the two discs I had and thought that was that. I received e-mails that they sent me two more discs! I complained to customer service and they said they normally continue to send discs for a short time even after cancellation. I told them to send no more discs and they agreed. I sent the discs back, got e-mails they received them, and hopefully that is that.
Friday evening I signed up with Netflix - actually a re-sign-up since I had them before I switched to BB. It's a one-month free trial. Once signed up I started going thru my BB "not available" list and lo and behold, all but two titles Netflix not only had but were apparently immediately available. The only two titles NF didn't have in BR were Demolition Man and Home Alone 2. Scheduled to arrive in the mail Monday are Papillon and Westworld in BR. There are quite a number of other titles that NF has in BR that BB didn't - I found that NF has Game Of Thrones Season 2 in BR, put those discs in the queue too. All of this for basically the same price I was paying BB.
I really wanted to support BB as competition to NF, but...sadly, they are no competition. I feel badly for BB as I really wanted them to succeed, but the lack of titles was just too much to overcome. I wish them well, and hope they can find their way.

I signed up for BB@Home when I had Dish Network. At first the service was fantastic. I never had out of stock items in my queue except for the first week or so of new release, which is no different than the chance you take going to the store. At the time there was a BB store close to me, and a second near quite a bit farther away but near my work so I was over there all the time anyway. By mail discs had a 3-4 day turn around including mailing day. Mail it back on Monday and I had a new disc sometimes by Wednesday, always by Thursday. Basically I always had 1 every week, sometimes 2, which was a great pace because it meant 4-6 movies a month. Sometimes I'd do in store exchange like when I wanted a brand new release right away, but mostly by mail was plenty fast enough. For what it cost I thought it a super value.

A few months in they closed the distribution center my discs had been going to, and switched me to one that was only 30 miles farther way but in a very different and much larger metro area. Mail turnarounds plummeted. Those 3-4 day turn around times becames 8-9 days for them to even put it in the mail, 12+ days total to get a new one in my hands. I was lucky to get 2 movies a month. I gave it some time for them to adjust to the extra load, but it never improved. At the same time, the BB store by my house was closed. To try and get more movies a month I started to exchange at the store by my job. I had to be aggressive about watching the by mail movie right away, exchanging it the next day, watching that one the same night, then dropping it back off the next day. This process got me back to at least 4 movies a month, but it was an annoying effort.

Then they closed the BB store by my job too. Within two mailings the turn around again plummeted, with the last one taking 19 days for an in stock, back catalog movie to get to me. I can't imagine why Dish bought BB if they were going to strangle it to death but there is simply no value in a service that takes this long to deliver a movie.

Now I have Amazon Prime and I absolutely love it because I get old TV series I love on top of moview. If I really want a brand new release I hit a Redbox, which are in every grocery store within 10 miles of me.

RIP Blockbuster, I knew ye well.

That's where I am right now: I might have to sign up for Netflix again. I'm so sick of the turn-around times. I'm lucky if I get one a week at this point. I used to have 2 a week, sometimes. frown.gif

Like I said...that's what I USED TO get. I get 1 a week now.
And that's when I turn it around immediately.

Has anyone here ever suspended their account and then resumed it before the 3 months was up, and gotten their old monthly rate? I suspended my account and am expecting that they will raise my pricing to the current level, but then when I logged-on recently their website still shows my good old rate.

I'm waffling on whether to cancel or resume--pretty sure I'll cancel if I have to pay the latest 3-at-a-time/unlimited rate though.

I had my 2 at a time account with BB on hold, but finally cancelled. They said they were going to improve their new release stock, but after 2 months, they had 2 titles listed as "Available" out of the 24 titles (that had not changed) in my queue... so they obviously lied or the studios just aren't cooperating.

After 2 months, the fact that only 2 titles were available , and the majority were still listed as High or Very High demand, was beyond ridiculous. Meanwhile, NF has been cranking out my 2 at a time subscription like clockwork. It takes 1 day for NF to receive my returns, and 1 day for me to receive new discs... like it used to be with BB in the good old days. Even after all of their stores closed in my area, I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and stick with them, but they failed miserably.

I can't believe BB doesn't have the Evil Dead (2013) Blu-ray available...it's coming out tomorrow but I'm not able to add it to my Queue...instead it's under the 'Not Available' group

NF has it, and they actually shipped it to me today... I feel better about my decision to cancel my BB subscription everyday.

it's now in stock at Blockbuster and added to my Queue...1 day late is better then never I guess...its status shows as 'Available' but I've learned not to put much faith in the Status indicators

BB has shipped out Evil Dead to me smile.gif

so many people complaining about Blockbuster but I honestly have never had issues with movies getting shipped (even new ones)...turnaround time is also very quick...having a warehouse close by helps a lot...I also like the plan I'm on- $4.99/month plan...1 movie out at a time, with a max of 2 movies a month

It still sounds like it's later than Netflix. I had Evil Dead in my hands on Tuesday from Netflix. That was extermely rare with my my Blockbuster subscription to have a disc in my hand on release day.

The service is definitely getting worse. Most of the new releases I have in my queue are not available. As the week goes on one or 2 might become available, will say now for availability, but even with that I don't get sent anything. This week was the first time in 3 weeks a disc shipped to me and I was bypassed numerous times.

Also, is anyone getting a BR3 option for G.I. Joe Retaliation? I wonder if this is an error or if the BR3 is an abbreviation for the 3D disc? Usually, there are 2 options, 1 being Blu-ray and the other being DVD. For G.I. Joe Retaliation it gives me a BR3 and DVD option.

That's why I bailed on BB and switched to NF, after being a BB subscriber for many years. After putting my BB account on hold (for over 2 months), I continued to monitor my queue and only 2-3 new release titles (out of 24) became "Available"... many of the titles I had in my queue had been there for more than 6-8 months, and were still listed as High or Very High Demand. Meanwhile, almost all of them were readily available from NF, and I received them immediately.

The primary reason I tried to stick with BB was because new titles were "supposedly" available as soon as they were released. Unfortunately, their inventory had become so bad, I wasn't receiving anything, much less new releases.

We all know who owns Blockbuster. So why is their service issues a surprise?

So I just ran into my first BD w/ out a lossless audio track from BB. mad.gif

I picked up R.E.D. to catch up before going to see the sequel and I find it only has DD 5.1

Is there any other confirmed BD's from BB w/ this?

How should I complain to?

Blu-ray does not imply HD audio.

are all Lionsgate rentals still coming without lossless audio or did they reverse course after all the backlash?

I rent about two to three BD's a week and I haven't come across a lossy Lions Gate release in over 6 months. Hopefully that trend will continue.

According to blu-ray.com there were 2 bluray versions of Red put out with the same 1/25/11 release date. The "Special Edition" they reviewed includes a lossless DTS-HD 5.1 track but the regular version includes only DD 5.1. Here's what ticks me off about Blockbuster though: the cover art they put on the website for Red shows as the Special Edition version even though that's not what they sent him. I've seen this with BB quite a bit where the cover art they use for something is its bluray version even though they don't actually stock the bluray and what they'll send you if you're not careful and select it is the DVD (ex. Rob Roy, Beautiful Girls, Intolerable Cruelty, Fresh). So you have to ignore their cover art and be really careful about what you're selecting and then in some cases like this one it still might be a crapshoot which version you get.

Obviously when they stock multiple versions of the same movie it would be understandable that you won't always get what the cover art shows, and maybe that was the case here with Red. But having bluray cover art for movies they don't even stock in bluray just seems downright dishonest to me.

Do they have 3D? If yes, how do I search online? Just bought myself a new TV with 3D..on another note, they just sent me the new G.I. Joe movie. Not sure how that happened. I should play the lotto.biggrin.gif

I had put my account "on hold" for a couple months cuz they'd decimated my queue and anyway I don't watch movies in the summertime, and had determined to cancel it before the end of the "hold" period because I expected they were going to raise my monthly rate. Well, it appeared they were NOT going to do that so I went ahead and restored it and sure enough, I still have the old rate.

More interestingly, they immediately shipped me 3 "new" Blu-rays that I'd been waiting on for a long time before going on hiatus. Given that taking my account off'n Hold looked like a NEW account to BB (they even sent me a welcome email!) it does indeed appear to me that BB treats new customers better than long-timers!

I know BB get a bad wrap and I sometimes give it to them too, but I'd like to hear more from other members who use them and have been a long time subscriber like myself.

I think I've have to place my account on hold only once or twice being in the service and going overseas or on a deployment or such.

I haven't had it on hold in over a year and a half.

My Que is loaded w/ very high demand (more of these), high demand, medium demand and available titles.

I get the very high demand and high demand no problems.

I work it so my 3 titles ship Monday and I have them by Wednesday or Thursday at the latest.

I'll exchange them sometime by Friday or Saturday at the local BB and turn them in by Sunday closing time at the store so they're checked in and my next 3 will ship the following morning.

So how am I not really having issues w/ getting them but others are?

There's got to be something we're missing here...

Edit: BTW, I've had the account since I believe they started doing this service back in '05 or '06.

Before they closed my local store, like you, I had no issues, since I was able to go there and do timely exchanges. Once I had to do my returns through the mail only, the waits got longer and longer.
