Pioneer Elite HD1 or Samsung 1400???

With the recent news about HD-DVD, I've decided to go ahead and get my first Blu-Ray player. I've narrowed it down to the Pioneer HD1 and the Sammy 1400. My main concern is PQ. I'm not concerned about AQ because i'm not planning on getting a new receiver as I feel my 6.1 Sony through fiber optic is good enough for me. I've read that many people have had issues with the Samsung 1400, and I've read nothing but great things about the Pioneer HD1. My question is, even with the software updates for HD1, is the 1400 still better in terms of PQ considering that it's a much newer player? I just want basically know which one of those 2 have the best picture quality? Thanks

I wouldn't go with either of these players. The Pioneer HD1 is a first gen model, very slow and not complete with regards to features like HDMI 1.3, BD Live etc

Samsung have a bad reputation so far with regards to their timely response in releasing firmware updates so discs can play.

Personally for the budget range you are talking about i would consider the upcoming Panasonic BD50 or PS3.

I have both a Pioneer Elite BD-94HD (succesor to the HD1) and a PS3 running 1080p 24f into a Sony XBR Full HD screen and although the Pioneer is slightly better you would be very hard pressed to pick it.

Pioneer equals quality. If anyone tells you different its because they have never owned one. I have the HD1 and even though it is a first gen unit you would be more than happy with it. Samsung is terrible with FW updates. Player wise the panny 30 is the fastest out right now, but it has a LFE bug.
Between these two, go with the HD1.

Isn't hdmi 1.3 simply for audio improvements? If that's the case I don't really care about 1.3.
Loading times aren't that big a deal for me either. If I'm gonna sit down to watch a movie for 2 hours, waiting an extra 30 sec to have the movie boot up isn't really that big a deal to me.

After reading some more i've found that the 1400 has tons of problems, so i'm pretty sure on backing out of that one and going with the HD1. Altough now i'm debating the Panasonic BD30
