I do the same anymore. I used to buy so many DVDs. I mean seriously, how many times was I going to watch Ghost Ship. Now I rent first and buy later.

I apply this also to greats. I would not want to watch a movie like the Pianist again. It is an amazing movie, but you have to be a masachist to watch that over and over. No offense to the masichists. On the other hand, I had to get the last Starfighter. It is not the greatest transfer, but I just love that movie. and 2001 and dune also.

See, now everyones tastes differ so much . I wouldn't watch Last Starfighter or Dune more than maybe 2-3 times in a lifetime, but I'd watch the Pianist at least once a year.

Definately agree about the dvd "buying". I used to do the same thing. Slowed wayyyy down on that.

DD has the best prices on DVDs, but for their Hi-Def stuff...they are almost as bad as Best Buy!

I would assume DVDplanet will pickup the sale by next week...

Thats a shame went BB yesterday they wanted 29.99 for Good Luck Chuck and this is not a very good movie.At these prices HD will never catch hold.

The sale is over at Amazon, but I always keep a bunch of items in the "Save for Later" area of my cart because it makes it really easy to see when things you're watching go up or down; as soon as you go to your shopping cart, you see a warning band across the top alerting you to the price change.

So, I've had The Searchers in there for some time. It wasn't part of the now-dead sale, but when I went in today I saw it had dropped from $18.95 to $15.99. Not a huge difference, I know, but it was enough to make me pull the trigger on it. A great John Ford western, #12 on AFI's most recent "100 greatest movies of all time." I expect it'll go back up in a day or two so act now if you're interested.

John Wayne's el dorado in another great video quality HD-DVD movie. Walter Brennon's blue eyes really stand out. The wife is a big western fan. 3:10 to Yuma is slated for tonight, sadly only in SD DVD.

I couldn't find El Dorado in HD DVD at Amazon, but I did see that both The Cowboys and Rio Bravo are 45% off ($15.99) as well. Must be a John Wayne sale or something. Who knows, maybe it was just a price drop.

I'm really not that big of a fan of his, but I like The Searchers because it was a different kind of role for him... he wasn't a nice guy in that one; kind of an anti-hero, I guess.

funny thing is I think this has more with why DVD sales are slowing down than competition from HD. I used to buy because after all the late fees it would end up being cheaper half the time. But with services like netflix where you can keep it as long as you want, it makes more sense to buy less.

Those are GOOD prices, you just can't accept that the Amazon HD DVD BOGO prices (which we've only seen over that one brief peiod) were simply an incredible opportunity. There is no way of knowing whether that opportunity will be repeated. That brief occurence hardly provides basis for saying "all catalog titles that should be priced at $10-$12."

Yes I know the HD DVD releases were just as high and most people are not going to spend that much on either format.

They set the bar themselves. From this point forward, I will never pay more tham $15 for any HDM discs. You can attempt to discredit my reasoning, but that does not earn them my money.
