I think most of us use RGB Limited but it depends on your set. I don't think there are any BRs out there that use RGB Full yet (I could very well be wrong here.)

As for 24fps, in your case "OFF" and "Automatic" are the same. With it set to "Auto" it will only output 24fps if your TV tells the PS3 it can accept it.

It depends on what you're using it for. If you're going to store tons of music and movies on it then wait for the bigger hard drive. If not, get one now.

The new ones (IF there are going to be new ones) may have newer processors that use less juice, thereby keeping the fan noise lower. Not everyone is bothered by the fan noise. I have a 60g model and the fan only kicks in when I'm upscaling a SD DVD, and even then it's not distracting.

Well there are a couple of things to consider, so let's see if I can help map them out to you.

#1) Is BC (Backwards Compatibility) for the ps2 important to you?
#2) Are there games or movies you want now?
#3) What can your TV and AVR support for video and audio?
#4) Why do you want one ASAP? What specific features, games, etc are you looking for?

The answers to those questions will help us give you a more accurate recommendation as every person's needs and wants can be very different...

I didn't mean the RGB full vs. limited, but rather the RBG vs. Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. I'm assuming rear projection TVs (not LCD) is only compatible with RGB. Or should I try both?

#1 - Nope, I don't own old PS games... have an old xbox.
#2 - Nope, just need it for upscaling DVD's, a few PS3 games and rented BluRays once in a while...
#3 - I'm getting a Samsung LN-T4071F and the HTiB is Onkyo HT-SP908. I don't think it gets better than that for a 'best bang for buck'... please tell me if I am wrong.
#4 - Well I'm getting married in the next 6 months and am moving to a new place soon. I need a decent home theater setup that will not be outdated...

Thanks for the help Splints!

Yeah, try both. Some people get a weird image using one or the other, but you won't break anything with any setting on the PS3.

Hmm, sounds like your h/w is ready for the latest in BD (including DTS-HD-MA), just a matter of timing for you.

Today I would say if your up for it, go to the Sony website (Sony Style page for ps3 40gb). When you check-out look for the Sony Credit Card discount for $100 bucks off. That would be the best deal I know of today, but feel free to look around for others.

The only thing your missing out on in the 40gb is the lack of SACD support, but if you don't have any SACDs today, your probably not going to notice. Hope that helps and enjoy your system! BTW, don't forget HDMI cables from Monoprice or another AVS sponsor.

It's called the BluWave remote. Try googling that, I don't have a link handy.

I got the $100 question, if you get the $100 off do you not get the free 5 movies?

The PS3 will not bitstream advanced audio formats to your receiver. It will not send advanced multi-channel formats over optical. It will decode all but DTS-HD and convert them to LPCM and pass that to your receiver via HDMI. It is rumored that DTS-HD MA support will be added in a future firmware update. In the interim, a 1.5mbps DTS track will be extracted from the DTS-HD MA source over optical or HDMI."

That's from the first post. The answers you seek are there.

You'll be in complete harmony when it learns either the Nyko remote or Schmartz technology.

Does the PS3 have the ability to set one resolution for SD-DVD disks (like 480i) and a separate resolution for BD disks (like 1080i).

I am interested in getting a BD player, but since none of them do good SD-DVD scaling, I would like to use my Denon AVR-3808ci to do the deinterlacing and scaling for SD-DVD content.

Ideally, after I make the settings, the PS3 would automatically switch to 480i for SD-DVD and to 1080i for BD. If it cannot do this, is there any player that can do this?

Thanks,

Abe Hayhurst

What's BR?

And some of you need to check the first post! The thread will become too cluttered unnecessarily if people are asking questions that are answered in the first post.

PS3 will use one resolution for both BD and DVD so you cannot set separate resolutions for their playback.
As for 480i over HDMI, I don't think PS3 does that but I might be wrong.
I'm not aware of any players than can set different resolutions for BD and DVD
post #143 of 693
You are correct, HDMI is 480p as a minimum on the ps3. The ps3 does a decent job in scaling. I would try it out on both the ps3 and the denon to see which one does the better job. I'm quite happy with the ps3, but I'm not that picky about my dvd upconversion quality.

I finally jumped and got the 80gig PS3, can't wait to watch some BD movies now, and maybe even play a game or two.

Oh, okay. Yeah RGB is for games/XMB.

FYI, "BD" would cause less confusion

Okay, I'm about to pull the switch on a 40GB PS3 from sony... sorry if this is the wrong thread to ask, but what are the most popular games on this system? I'm sure all the games work the same and look great on the system, but are there any that 'stand out'? I need a first person shooter (action game), a racing game, and maybe one other... any advice? I want to take the full potential out of the system!

You could start with some of the free demos from the PS Store. Also, there is a forum section just for the playstation where the gaming heads hang out.
