I want to take the full potential out of the system!

heh, try the Playstation forum here at AVS.

Here are a few recommendations:

FPS: Call of Duty 4 (COD4)

Racing: Burnout Paradise seems to be popular, but wait for GT5 Prologue later this year, that will be the game to get!

Online gaming: Warhawk (3rd person shooter with planes, tanks, and jeeps and more!)

Arcade shooter: Super Stardust HD (SSHD) from the PSN store

Adventure: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (not a long game, but fun, think Indy meets Tomb Raider)

Rhythm game: Rock Band!!!!

I'd like to hear your impressions. I dont think you can power the unit up or down with it or eject discs. But I get up to do all that anyway.

You can hook up any USB drive to a PS3 easily. (ie plug it in) The drive needs to be formatted as FAT32.

I think 750Gb is about as big as a single drive gets.

Others are using NAS (network attached storage) these are available at least up to 4TB. 4000GB. They need to DNLA compliant. (this wouldbe a whole other thread, google it up)

As far as ripping DVDs to a HDD and playing them on a PS3.

http://www.ps3forums.com/archive/index.php/t-51020.html
"You don't have to re-encode the files, once you have merged the .VOB files into one file, just rename it to a .MPG file and it should play just fine. PS3 will play MPEG-2 videos and that is all the .VOB file is, you just need to rip it using DVD Decrypter first."

Why don't you just try them out and see which looks better? You can't break anything by testing different settings.

cause im no expert and thought that there were some general "agreed on" settings that we should use for setting up the PS3..

Hi

For DVD upscale use Normal.

Cinema Conversion:
Default setting is Automatic. Use that, unless: you watch a lot of music videos, tv shows and similar stuff. Or you have a SD DVD that is wrongly flagged (which can be quite a few) and you see scrolling text "break up" (lots of streaks) -> use Video.

Sometimes the Automatic setting gets confused with mixed content. Setting it to Video forces it to Video (instead of Film) mode which does clean up some of the interlacing artifacts.

There is no one setting for all use, if you want to tweak the most out of a particular SD DVD. However, if you're unsure, leave Cinema Conversion at Automatic.

Other than that see the OP first post in this thread for settings.

More info can be had at http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/

Cheers

As for 480i over HDMI, I don't think PS3 does that but I might be wrong.
I'm not aware of any players than can set different resolutions for BD and DVD

Yes you can. If you set DVD upscaling to off you'll get DVD output at 480p but Blu-Rays will still output at 1080p (or 1080i).

We're not watching movies on your TV, you are. And when it comes to what looks best to you, you are the expert.

I would appreciate some help with the PS3 web browser and getting game demos or movie trailers.

I can get to the demo page for example and when I point to a game the icon gets in focus but I can't select it or anything. I've been trying pressing every button on the SIXAXIS and nothing.

Can someone, please explain how this is done.

Thanx
Don't use the browser to look for demos, go the the PSN store. You shouldn't have a problem from there.

Thanx guys. I didn't realize you had to go to the PSN store unless you were actually buying something. I'll give it a try tonight.

What's the point of the browser opening those SONY pages if you can't do anything there

BTW, what kind of personal info do they want for the PSN account?

Wanted to see if some of the experts here can assist me. I have a PS3 I purchased about 2 weeks ago. It playes BR disks just fine, and the PQ is outstanding. I have it connected to a Vizio GV52LF 52" LCD.

What I have noticed is that any time the PS3 goes from PS3 desktop menu to a movie or game the TV will show "no signal!" for about a second. Then the Movie or Game menu will show up fine. It never does this while playing a game or watching the main part of the movie (it has done it between transitions in the movie such as moving from the trailers to the movie itself). It also shows "no signal!" when going back to the desktop, again for only a brief time. I asked a friend about this who has a PS3 and a Samsung 52" LCD and he says his does the exact same thing. I am connected to HDMI 1.2 (friend on HDMI 1.3).

Other items connected and they do not have any issues such as this: Sony Upconverting DVD player, PC via DVI to HDMI, PS3.

Sorry, I just realized this post should probably not be in the FAQ area.

Any ideas? Is this normal? Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks for any help.
As far as I know this is normal (at least mine has always done it also). I beleive it is because of switches in resolution and refresh rates. Kind of like when you change a cable box between a standard def and hi def channel it takes longer.

Yes this is normal as I have a similiar setup but a Vizio 42" GV42LF LCD TV along with using my PS3 as BD player.

Is there any way to watch Netflix movies instantly over the PS3 internet connection?
Thanks

Good question. I would like to know this one too. Also any way to watch network TV shows over the internet. Ex. Go to NBC web site and watch a show you missed. I do this from my pc all the time, but if the PS3 could handle this....sniff....sniff.....I might just cry many tears of joy.

I can't watch Netflix movies on my Mac. Quote from Netflix:

Your operating system is not compatible with this feature. Try again from a computer with Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista.

Also, the PS3 doesn't seem to stream audio or video from a web page, in some cases. It will, instead, download the mp3 or video. YouTube is one exception, that I know of, where you can watch the video "live", like on a PC.

You can then watch the downloaded mp3 or video from the XMB.

Actually, I don't think the PS3 does any kind of downsampling at all. TrueHD tracks often have a parallel DD track that will play when TrueHD is not supported. The PS3 isn't converting to DD on the fly; it's just playing that alternate track. It's the same thing with DTS-HD MA and the core DTS track (though in that case I think the core is part of the lossless track somehow, but the principle is the same). The only thing it will do is downmix PCM to 2-channel stereo.

Rich Davenport, I bet that the backup/restore function will NOT save the downloaded games. That backs up your system settings to some kind of internal solid-state storage on the PS3. I doubt that they would have included enough space to save many gigabytes' worth of games, because if they did, what would be the point of the hard drive in the first place?

As for NetFlix, no, you can't use their watch now feature. It won't even work in Firefox. It requires Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player.

Silly question (I think) but couldn't find an answer anywhere...

With any other DVD player, if I ever stop the movie and/or turn it off, when I start back up and starts at the place where I last stop. With the PS3, when I do this, it goes to the start and I have to traverse though all the trailers etc..., then finally find the place where I last stopped.

Is there a way to get around this?

People, this is supposed to be a thread for posting FAQ related items, not a place to ask all your questions... for that, we have a dedicated thread with questions... here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=650544

From the first post in this thread:

[Moderator note: Here's a link to PS3 BD player discussion thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=650544 This PS3 as a BD player guide/FAQ will supersede post #1 in the previous link. Please help Steve with new info and only use this thread for contributions or corrections. PS3 talk should go in the linked thread. Thanks.]

I have a request, also. Can we plesae have a date added to the first post indicating when it was updated, so as we return to it, it indicates whether the info is older or newer? Thank you if that can be added.

Now, I previous HD-A2 I had did transcode the higher resolution audio codecs into DTS; however, my new 40GB PS3 does not.

Not sure if you forgot or not, but yeah, the chart is bunk.

Thanks for the tip! I took advantage of $100 off an 80GB PS3. I got 12 months zero interest, too. Missed out on the 5 free movies, however.

I just swapped for a 40g from Circuit City on Tuesday. Great machine, it was an upgrade for me from the Sharp Aquos Blu-ray player. The PS3 loads up much quicker, updates very easily thru ethernet, more video and audio setting options, moves through tracks and menus more smoothly, overall its just a better player for the same buck$. And this week you get the PS3 remote free with the 40g player. ($25 value)

I'm also kinda bummed about the 5 free movies rebate expiring,... are there any new free movie promotions for new owners after 1-31-08?

Not currently unfortunately, keep an eye on the BD deals thread.

Someone posted a chart that showed all the differences in all the different models of PS3.

I thought they were in this thread but since I didn't see it I think it would be a good addition.
