Open Box HD-A30

One of my local B&M stores has an open box A30. I was thinking of getting it as a second/backup hd-dvd player/second upconverting player. They have it marked down to $150, but it is not worth it for that price considering I can get a new one online for $10 more net cost to me. What would be a good price to try to shoot for when I try to get them to drop the price more and does the 5 free movie rebate work with open box merchandise, yes the upc code is still on the box.

the movie rebate doesn't have anything to do with being open-box...I wouldn't worry about it. I wouldn't pay $150 for it without some sort of extended warranty of atleast a 1 year. Like you say, you can get a new one for little more than they want for the open one.

The 5-movie rebate form specifically states it excludes open-box units.

I would phone and check with them on that point....I just bought an XA2 open-box last week, and saw on the disclaimer that they were exempt. I phoned the distribution company and explained I had an open-box, and there is no longer a box from the store - they said they would still honor the 5 disk offer if I supplied them with the receipt (says open box on it) along with a letter from the company advising the box was no longer available. I picked up my letter today from Future Shop, and will be submitting it this week with the receipt, and a photo of the serial number so they can determine that that unit has not been 'redeemed' yet. I don't know if the Canadian distributor has different rules, but it never hurts to call and ask

I sure hope that they do indeed follow through. The true answer will be when the box of 5 movies shows up on your doorstep.
