Thanks Sam. I was pretty sure the PS3 did NOT decode DTS-HD and this proves it. The CBR 1.5Mbps indicates a DTS "core" is being decoded.

This thread deserves a sticky.

namechamps,

Please update your chart for the Pioneer Elite HD1. It does internally decode TrueHD and DD+. The player has the same decoding capabilities as the Sony BDP-S1(they are clones of each other minus the ethernet port).

Thanks. I will update chart tonight. Just to confirm it is decode ONLY (like I have on chart for the S1). Did the HD1 require firmware update to gain TrueHD (like S1) or was it TrueHD capable out of the box. I am marking firmware updates with * so new user's are not "confused".

To everyone else keep the updates coming. The more input the more we can consolidate the data to one accurate chart.

The PS3 does SACD but lacks 5.1 analog outputs or the ability to send DSD over HDMI. Thus I continue to use my OPPO for listening to my prized SACD and DVD-A audio disks.

Decoding on your chart should reflect exactly the same as the S1. The TrueHD/DD+ was added later via firmware update.

Sticky this please.

Its about time we actually have a simple "yes" "no" option list on this extremely confusing, overly debated, inadequately designed and poorly implemented technology that is "HD AUDIO".

Corrected the chart to reflect proper stats for PS3 and HD1.

I shortened descriptions in each cell to make chart fit forum better (width).

I made "no support" cells blank as I think it makes it easier to see at a glance the abilities.

Keep the corrections & suggestions coming. More input = more accurate information.

Namechamps,

Here is my correction list:

LG

BH-200 - DD+ (Decoded), DD TrueHD ( Decoded 2ch), No DTS-HD HR or MA. (Same as the Samsung BD-UP5000)

Samsung

BD-P1200 - DD+ (Decoded)

BD-P1400 - DD+(Complete), DD TrueHD (Complete), DTS-HD HR (Stream) and DTS-HD MA (Stream).

BD-UP5500 - Analog output is 2CH. So, full support on all HD Audio Codecs are limited to Stream because of the analog output section of this player.

Sharp

BD-HP20U - DD+ and DD TrueHD are limited to 48Khz/24bit. This is a "Special Case".

If I find something else, I'll let you know.
The Sharp will do 7.1 over HDMI.

5.1 is max via analog like the chart shows.

Thanks for the good info. My questions/clarifications are in your post

Samsung
BD-P1200 - DD+ (Decode, bitstream, both? It is not on samsungs spec sheet or early reviews. Does it require firmware updated to get this functionality?)

BD-P1400 - DD+, DD TrueHD, No DTS-HD HR or MA. (Is this decode, bitstream or both?)

BD-UP5500 - Analog output is 2CH. So, full support on all HD Audio Codecs are limited to Stream because of the analog output section of this player. (I will mark the analog as 2.0 but leave codecs as complete because it would still be "complete" for PCM over HDMI).

Fixed on the original post.

You might want to clarify that Profile 1.1 is officially called Bonus View by the BDA.

namechamps;
thanks for putting together and maintaining this matrix - very helpful.

Mods;
I second the suggestion to make this a sticky - please!

I've asked for confirmation in the Sharp owners thread but I believe the Sharp BD-HP20 can decode DTS-HD HR internally.

Sure Right now I believe it would be 100% No. Are there any BD players that can playback SACD? DVD-A?
PS3 does play SACD but not DVD-A.

And the Panasonic BD10 supports DVD-Audio. I think DVD-A/SACD support stops with these two machines when it comes to HDM players.

It should be noted that newer 40GB PS3s do not support SACD, and the PS3s that do support it must convert DSD into PCM.

According to the manual available online, the Denon 2500 can decode the hi def Dolby and DTS bitstreams and pass them on in PCM.
Don't know if this is relevant, given this year's events, but the LG BH100 will only decode 2-channel TrueHD for HD DVD. It apparently will decode 5.1 channel TrueHD for Blu-ray. Don't ask me why one and not the other.
Why is this still not a sticky?

Bump...

I don't believe 5.1 channel TrueHD playback is a required spec for HD-DVD. But, I may be wrong.

No. The Denon 2500 can decode DD & DTS (i.e plain jane same as DVD - DD & DTS). All BD players are required to decode DD & DTS.

The 2500 can only bitstream and NOT decode DD+, DTS-HD HR, TrueHD, DTS-HD MA which is what the matrix reflects.

I didn't include a DTS "legacy" and DD "legacy" column because it would be COMPLETE (bitstream & decode) for every BD player released.

Panny 10a is 7.1 analog out and HDMI, upconverts DTS core to DTS-HD "enhanced" as of FW 2.1.
Thanks for taking time to make chart.

You have not included the Funai player announced at CES.
