Making Toshiba players region free. - Page 4

Thank you Budman and minguy! It worked on my A2, and I updated it to 2.8 afterwards. I think the second flash is the drive update (my tv said updating, and the player had 1/2 and 2/2). I don't have any PAL discs so this is perfect. Now I can sell my Momitsu.

I'll be subscribing to and watching this thread closely. I have an OPPO and XA2 connected to the same TV and would love to eliminate OPPO. I did brick a player once before with a failed firmware update and also have another player that keeps reverting back to Spanish menus. I'll wait for a turnkey tried and true solution.

If everyone works together to solve this and gives credit where credit is due, I think the RCE thing could be patched relatively easy.

The RCE will only effect those who are outside of Region 1 anyway?

I mean not many PAL discs that aren't in R1 that have RCE.

Just wanted to say thanks to "NikeAjax", I was finally able to trick my XE1 into downgrading to the 2.5 MR firmware and then upgraded to V2.8.

It is not just PAL disc. There are a lot of people in Region 1 that want to view Region 2 NTSC movies from Japan, etc. I'm in that camp.

the rce hack will only work on hdxe1,hdep10,hd-e1........

@ hdxa1user

Do you think this apply to the XA2 as well. Is the XA2 the *exact* same machine as the XE1? If so, the XA2 could run the XE1 firmware.

What do you think?

I just learned about RCE and am afraid to use the region free hack now. Is there any workaround? I have the HD-A2 and if I use the USA firmware will it default to region 1 and play the disc? What about if I put in a region 1 disc first before I put in the RCE disc? Has any one tried these workarounds?

no mate the rce hack is something different , you can put that in your player

With thanks to posters in this thread, I successfully applied the hack to an XA2 last night. I went from 2.7 back to the 2.5 hack. Tonight I will try upgrading to the new 2.8 and see what happens, but from other reports, I'm expecting the hack to hold. If I can find a PAL disc in my collection, I'll give that a spin and report back.

maxthesilent,

Your XA2 was at version US 2.7, then you downgraded to EU 2.5. So at the moment you're running the XE1 firmware?

Then you plan to upgrade to 2.8, US or EU?

Thanks.

The region free will stay as long as Tosh doesnt upgrade there drive firmware.
The second part of the firmware code you see is the drive firmware
2.8 "T23T" is the drive.
If it does play PAL you will lose that if you go to US firmware.

HD-A2, now happily playing both Japanese and US NTSC DVDs at 2.8 thanks to a kind poster in this thread. :-D

Well true cause 1.3 used a older drive firmware than 1.6 uses. maybe like 1.3 "T22T" Tosh could put the cabash to us all by adding another drive update someday.if you decide to ever update again......
My A2 came shipped with 1.2 originally.

We're talking holy grail here. Get thee to a PAL disc and report. Fingers crossed.

PAL will not work with the 2.5 modded firmware. I tried a R2 2046 disc from Tartan and it shows the usual "Won't play PAL" message. I upgraded the unit to the new, US 2.8 firmware and the hack held, and still no PAL. Again, I tried the R2 2046 and got the same message. I popped in a couple R3 discs and the unit is doing upconversion to 1080p as usual.

You might have luck with the following steps from AVForums to overcome RCE, but I don't know if this helps with PAL playback on US machines:

Quote:
1) Turn on player
2) Open tray and put a disc, but don´t close the tray
3) Push T.SEARCH on remote
4) Push 1, 3, 9 and "Region number" (e.g. 1 for US discs)
5) Push T.SEARCH on remote.

You will see TEST appear on your player.

6) Close the tray and the RCE disc should play

When the player is turned off, this setting is cleared.

Hi, anybody has a 1.6 firmware iso file for the hd-e1 for me to download or a link to one. Can't seem to find one anywhere .thank you
post #115 of 125
Alright, I went from 2.7 -> 1.3US -> 2.501EU -> 2.7US and now PAL/NTSC DVDs play from all regions (have tried R1/R2 of both kinds) which is great... but I am no longer getting audio though my HDMI output, although I am still getting video.

Audio DOES work through optical (which I am using now) but anyone have this problem? heh. I just tried upping to 2.801US and that did not work either.

Which player?
Oh, sorry. Toshiba A2.
Uh, nevermind.

Seems there was a setting in my receiver that was incorrect (which didn't affect playback before or on my other inputs, strangely)

Thanks for all the info in this thread, by the way! I can finally put my crappy Phillips region-free player to bed.
So, correct me if I am wrong:

There is no way, using either the A2 or XA2, to make these players region free AND capable of playing a PAL disc as NTSC.

It seems that my Sony XBR4 46" LCD TV does not support 50Hz output, thus I get a message about unusable signal when it outputs PAL.

So there could still be value in players such as the above-mentioned crappy Phillips b/c at least they can convert PAL to NTSC, correct?
Yeah, it's either straight PAL or straight NTSC output (at 1080i/50hz and 1080i/60hz at the highest upscaling on the A2).

If you are incapable of displaying PAL, you're not going to be able to play R2 discs from, say, the UK, but you would be able to play region-coded NTSC discs on your TV (say, from Japan [R2], Korea [R3], and mainland China [R3])
