LandShark's small yet cozy home theater thread......

The Cozy Theater 2.0 has started too!!

before & after:

~ my poor man's Bluray changer & whole house media distribution info/setup starts @ page 7~8.

ok, after some planning and thinking, I finally decided to build a dedicate home theater using a small area in the basement.

I live in a townhouse, so space is a premium to me! the room/basement_area size is only 12'x15' with a 8' ceiling, and is currently used as my home "computer lab".

EDIT:
what I want is a nice home movie theater that I don't wanna go out anymore but doesn't make me rob a bank neither!

here's the equipment list that I already have or have it in mind:

Epson HomeCinema 1080UB projector
100" Elite CineWhite screen

Yamaha RV-X1800 receiver
Definitive Tech speakers (2 x BP7006, C/L/R2300, 2 x BP1.2X, SuperCubeI)

HTPC client
PS3
Wii
Xbox360
Panamax power conditioner
a low profile A/V center, got it from BestBuy
a comfy L shape sofa, prefer a reclineable one (got it from Ikea)
Lutron Mateso IR remote lighting
Logitech 1000 remote
Logitech PS3 adapter
a Disc storage cabinet, also from Ikea

here's the SketchUp rendering that I have in mind.....

the last one is the closest thing to the real world.

I thought about cut out a hole and build a A/V rack on the side wall to left of the screen next to the entry door. however, there's a storage room behind that wall and has some water piping right along the wall! so I gave up that idea and go for just a low profile A/V center instead (and save some $ too).

also, I'm not rich nor have a huge budget. therefore, I'm trying to do what I want to do with the least amount of money too (but not necessary being cheap or cutting corner)! currently projected budget in mind, around $10k.

Hmm.... you'd be the first person happy with one coat of black paint on a white ceiling. Great looking space.

Looking good Gary. Can't wait to see what it looks like when you are done. You plan to do any acoustic treatment to the room?

lol..... you tracked me down huh WK??

since I'm living in a townhouse (but end unit), I did think 'bout some sort of acoustic treatment especially to the wall that attach to my next door neighbor. however, at this point, I'm just trying to get it done and see first, since there's a laundry room sitting in between the HT and my neighbor. and as you can see above, I didn't get a dedicated sub (yet!) 'cos all three front Definitive Tech has a 300w 8" built in sub. so, I'll have to wait and see how this goes first. (or more like wait and hear my neighbor's complain first! )

in the worst case, I might just get some acoustic panel hang them on the laundry room's wall that attach to the neighbor to cut out the sound.

oh, in case you'll ask, if you look closer to the SketchUp pic, there IS a Antec Fusion HTPC sitting at the lower right corner of the A/V cabinet too!

I was meaning more for better sound, rather then bothering the neighbor. Doing some treatment at the FR points in the room.

FR?

I didn't really look into it yet..... any suggestion?? (but again, I'm in the wait and see stage tho)

I'm impressed with your Sketchup technique!

I've just been fooling around with Sketchup and I'm having a hard time coming up with room views like the ones you have (e.g. invisble walls so you can see through one side)...let alone all the details like furniture.
There is a program on here to find the first reflection, do a search for frv 1.02. You can also have a person sit at the listening area and you walk down the side walls with a mirror. If you want hit me up on AIM or MSN and I can send you the file.

I was a bit frustrated too when I first use it. but after a little fool around, it actually is pretty easy to use! but I did spend a few days to get to the last one that looks almost exactly to what I have in mind.

for invisible wall, you just right click on the wall, I think the first 3 option there, there's a hide item or something like that! as for furniture and stuffs (PS3, xbox, wii, htpc, etc.), you can get it from google's sketchup library on the web. iirc, it's File -> Get 3D model.

tks for the heads up! I'll let you know when I'm ready look into it more. but at this point, I just want to get it up and running first..... (and I think I've already missed my provisional Super Bowl Opening given my current progress.....)

I really like your Sketchup drawings, but I think I can suggest a small change, that might actually make your room a lot better... try pointing the projector towards the screen wall! :-)

Great progress BTW.

You know, I had not read this thread yet until today. That room really does look sharp. A perfect size for the area. Where did you get your carpet? I love the color a lot. It really ties into the rest of the room nicely.

I also think it is about time to get the screen and PJ up and running. Not much left to do.
